II.RATIONALE:
In accordance to DepEd Order 14, series 2018 also known as The Philippine
Informal Reading Inventory, the Department of Education has developed Phil- IRI to address
the needs of the students which aim to make every student becomes a reader and a writer at
her/his grade level and to embrace the inclusionary principles that emphasize the need for
education that is learner–oriented, responsive and culturally sensitive.
Thus, The Union National High School- Mt. Diwata Annex will be conducting Eight
weeks of Reading Remediation/Intervention also known as Eight-Week Reading
Curriculum for Struggling Readers for the months of August to September ,2021 from
Grade 7 to Grade 10 to respond to the revised Phil- IRI manual and to provide English
teachers with a tool for measuring and describing student’s reading level after the through
the GT. This will also help the teachers in assessing the students through graded
passages to determine the learner’s reading level.
This Phil- IRI is also one of the initiatives in support to “Bawat Bata Bumabasa (3Bs
Initiative)” in pursuant to Deped Memorandum No.173,s.2019 to conduct reading
remediation/intervention for the learners who are considered as non-readers and frustration
level readers, and it can also help the teachers in designing and providing an appropriate
reading instruction for the students’ current reading levels and abilities. This adjustment of
Phil- IRI is divided into three types of individual assessments which are oral reading
comprehension, listening comprehension and silent reading comprehension. With this,
teachers may identify their students reading levels as Independent, Instructional or
Frustration levels.
Indeed, this program will be of great help especially for the students development
and also to the teachers to lighten their tasks in reaching out with their students by applying
the adjustments of Phil- IRI approaches and assessment tools to be used bases on the
learners capacity.
