BIOCHEMISTRY
CARBOHYDRATES
A carbohydrate is a biomolecule consisting of carbon hydrogen and
oxygen atoms , usually with a hydrogen –oxygen atom ratio of 2:1
FUNCTION OF
CARBOHYDRATES
Carbohydrates are essential part of our diet
Carbohydrate are structural component of cells
Carbohydrates play a role as energy source
EXAMPLE
1 .glycogen
2. Fructose
Carbohydrate play a role as a source of protection
EXAMPLE
Plant cell wall is made up of cellulose
Carbohydrates broken down to mainly glucose are the
preferred source of energy for our body as cells in our brain,
muscle and all other tissue directly use monosaccharide for
their energy need.
Starches and sugars are the main energy providing
carbohydrates
Regulation of fat metabolism
Carbohydrate role in gastro intestinal function
Carbohydrate play role in metabolism
Carbohydrates provide supportive functions
Monosaccharide are directly absorbed by small intestine into
the blood where they are transported to the cells in need
Several hormones, including insulin and glycogen are also
part of digestive system
PROTEIN
Protein defined as high molecular weight mixed polymer of a amino
acids joined together with peptide linkage.
FUNCTIONS OF
PROTEIN
Proteins are Important constitute of protoplasm
Simple protein (histone and protamine) combine with nucleic acids
to form nucleoproteins which carry heredity material from one
generation to another
All enzymes are pretentious in nature
Some hormones are proteins EXAMPLE insulin glycogen
parathyroid hormones.
Perform carrier function
EXAMPLE hemoglobin carries oxygen and carbon dioxide ,
albumin carries iron and bilirubin etc.
Help in the coagulation of blood
EXAMPLE fibrinogen and thrombin
Protein perform defense function
EXAMPLE gamma globin’s
Help in muscle concentration
EXAMPLE actin and myosin
Protein provide energy
EXAMPLE 1gm of protein 4.2kilocalories
Protein present in all viruses
LIPIDS
LIPIDS are molecules that contain hydrocarbons and make up the
building blocks of the structure and function of living cell. Example of
lipids include fats, oils waxes and certain vitamins such as A,D, E,K
FUNCTION OF
LIPIDS
Lipids play extremely important roles in the normal functions of
cell.lipids perform many function such as:
Energy storage
Main component of plasma membrane
Insulation
Acting as hormones
Act as the structural component of the body and provide the
hydrophobic barrier that permits the aqueous contents of the cell
and subcellular structures
Lipids are major source of energy in animals and high lipid
containing seeds
They are stored in adipose tissue
They serves as a source of fat-soluble vitamins A D E k
Lipids (fats)are the concentrated fuel reserves of the body
Lipids are important as cellular metabolic regulators
Some lipids serves as precursors for the synthesis of complex
molecules example accetylcoeenzyme-A is used for synthesis of
cholesterol
