CPM (Critical Path Method) Question # 01:

Solved the following network problem by using CPM, data is given as

A method of network analysis used by the business organization to understand the element of
task, or work involved in a project.

Activity Immediate Duration in Weeks

**Basic element is Project Management Predecessor

A - 2
 Doing effectively and efficiently B - 5
 Less wastage C - 4
 Prepare use of resources
D B 5
 Timely start of a project and
 Timely competition of a project then two types:
E A 7
1) CPM F A 3
2) PERT G B 3
H C, D 6
I C, D 2
Project Management J E 5
K F, G, H 4

Network Analysis
M I 12
It is a Technique use to breakdown a complex project’s data into the component parts [events, N J, K 8
activities, duration etc.] and plotting them to show their interdependencies and interrelationship.

1. Construct the Project network

2. Find-out the critical path and project completion time
3. Determine total floats and free floats for non-critical activities
CPM PERT

We are going to calculate the followings:

1) Construction of Project network

2) Finding critical path and project completion time
3) Computation of free floats and total floats for non-critical activities

1 2
Solution:

Early Event Time

Late Event Time

1st method like verbally can perform. Longest time duration will be called the critical path. Early event Time

2nd method is recommenced

Early Event Time = Early start Time = Forward Pass

Late Event Time = Latest Completion tine = Backward Pass

Line-wise follow the direction

Late event time

A 1–2 - 2
B 1–3 - 5
C 1–4 - 4
D 3–4 B 5
E 2–5 A 7
F 2–6 A 3
G 3–6 B 3
H 4–6 C, D 6
I 4–7 C, D 2
J 5–8 E 5
K 6–8 F, G, H 4
Estimation of Critical Path L 6–9 F, G, H 3
M 7–9 I 12
1 – 3 – 4 – 6 – 8 – 9 is the critical path
N 8–9 J, K 8
B – D – H – K – N are critical activities

5 + 5 + 6 + 4 + 8 = 28 weeks (Project Completion Time (longest time))

Total Float = No delay of activity to perform (how many weeks)

Free float = without effecting the other activities of delay

Question # 02:

A company manufacturing plant and equipment for chemical processing is in the process of
quoting tender called by public sector undertaking. Help the manager to find the project
completion time to participate in the tender.

Project completion time = 20 weeks and the critical path = A – D – F – H.

Required:

(1) Write the network referring to the data

(2) Number the events as discussed earlier.
(3) Calculate Project completion time (TE)
(4) Identify the critical path

Solution:

Question # 03: Solution:

A small project has 7 activities and the time in days for each activity is given below:

Project completion time = 20 days and critical path is A – D – F.

Given that activities A and B can start at the beginning of the project. When A is
completed C and D can start. E can start only when B and D are finished. F can
start when B, C or D are completed and is the final activity. G can start when E is
finished and is the final activity. Draw the network and find the project completion
time.

Draw the network and enter the times and find TE .
