TAKEHOME FINAL EXAMINATION
(Due to 12.01.2021)
PROBLEM 1)

a) For the four wheel steering vehicle with

𝛿𝑟 = −𝛿𝑓 + 𝐶1 𝑢𝑟
where u and r are the forward speed and yaw velocities of the vehicle, show that to
obtain zero transient and steady state value of the vehicle side slip angle, β. the
expression for C1, is given as

𝑚 𝑏 𝑎
𝐶1 = − ( + )
𝐿 𝐶𝑓 𝐶𝑟

Note that the term (a-b)/u2 is small so that it can be neglected.

b) Show that with this control strategy, the vehicle will always be stable
independent of speed and handling characteristic (neutral-, under-, or oversteer) of the
original front wheel steering vehicle.

c) With the given front wheel steering input below, find the lateral speed and yaw
velocity outputs.
δf [deg]

8o

3 t [sec]

PROBLEM 2)

Consider the specifications of a vehicle provided below.

i) Calculate the roll angle in degrees at a lateral acceleration of 0.5 g.
ii) Calculate the limiting acceleration (when one wheel is just about to lift off the
road) in g's for the vehicle. Is the vehicle neutral-, under-, or over-steered at the
limiting lateral acceleration?
iii) Now, calculate the lateral acceleration at which both of the inner wheels lift off the
road. Note the safety factor involved in checking the first wheel to lift off.
iv) Calculate the required total antiroll bar stiffness if the allowable roll angle at a
lateral acceleration of0.5 g is set at 3.5°.

Height of roll center 320 mm
Distance between coil spring mounting centers 980 mm
PROBLEM 3)

Use the set of data listed below and the bounce and pitch model to
a) calculate the exact undamped natural frequencies for the pitch and bounce modes, and
compare those with pure pitch and bounce natural frequencies,
b) check if aksf = bksr, and
c) conclude if k2/ ab> 1
