SHAFT DESIGN

Torque at Shaft-1 = 195 N.m (this comes from the motor)

Torque at Shaft-2 = 195 * 5 = 975 N.m

Torque at Shaft-3 = 195 * 5 * 3 = 2925 N.m

Diameter of shaft = d

Sy = Yield Strength of Steel = 350MPa

From Equation 4.4 of textbook;

16∗T
d=

3

¿ 0.58∗Sy

Factor of Safety is set at 2.

Therefore ;

Torque at Shaft-1 = 195 * 2 = 390 N.m

Torque at Shaft-2 = 975 * 2 = 1950 N.m

Torque at Shaft-3 = 2925 * 2 = 5850 N.m

1. Shaft-1

16∗390
d= 3
√ ¿ 0.58∗350∗106

d1 = 21.39 mm

2. Shaft-2

16∗1950
d= 3
√ ¿ 0.58∗350∗106

d1 = 36.57 mm

3. Shaft-3
16∗5850

d= 3
¿ 0.58∗350∗106

d1 = 52.75 mm

Summary:
Shaft-1 Shaft-2 Shaft-3
Diameter (mm) 21.39 36.57 52.75
Torque (N.m) 390 1950 5850

KEYWAYS DESIGN

Depth = Diameter/8

Width = Diameter/4

Length = Diameter * 1.8

1. Keyway for Shaft-1

Depth = 21.39/8 = 2.67 mm

Width = 21.39/4 = 5.34 mm

Length = 21.39*1.8 = 38.5 mm

2. Keyway for Shaft-2

Depth = 36.57/8 = 4.57 mm

Width = 36.57/4 = 9.14 mm

Length = 36.57*1.8 = 65.83 mm

3. Keyway for Shaft-3

Depth = 52.75/8 = 6.59 mm

Width = 52.75/4 = 13.19 mm

Length = 52.75*1.8 = 94.95 mm

Summary:
Depth (mm) Width (mm) Length (mm)

Shaft-1 2.67 5.34 38.5

Shaft-2 4.57 9.14 65.83

Shaft-3 6.59 13.19 94.95
