What is the topic about?

The topic is about Intellectual Property for Beginners. It includes the Idea Flow,
Innovation stage, the overview of the IP System, how the IP concept is important for everyone,
and about Technology Readiness Level.
Based on our understanding of the sessions, let us start with the idea flow. Idea flow
considers the full cycle of an idea from its inception to its robust implementation and continuous
adaptation. It is also concerned with both the nature and quality of the path or process
experienced by a new idea going through its full life cycle within its organizational or social
context. There are nine (9) categories on how an idea must flow or generate. The first one is the
idea itself; this stage is where we will think of an idea that is unique wherein, we can find risks
and opportunities to help in solving societal problems. Every idea that is generated by
researchers, inventors, technopreneurs, and others must be compiled to review them all which
is most suitable. They can use rationale paper or logbook of activities in every brainstorm of
ideas they generate. It is important also to identify suitable project ideas wherein this is the most
important step in the whole process of project preparation. The second one is the Legal
Implications. This includes the funding, technical working groups (can be faculty or students),
and consultants. The third one is the timeline of our project. It includes how we will research our
topic or idea, the market study of our idea, the prototyping, testing/evaluation, protection, and
commercialization. The fourth is the search, which is divided into two, the patent search and
non-patent collection search. The fifth one is the Market or how we will identify our users. The
best way is to perform survey forms to know what the results are or if our idea is needed and
efficient to our users. Others are reverse engineering wherein we need to dwell to the
weaknesses of our users, prototyping, protection, and options.
Innovation is the creation of new ideas that result in the development of new or improved
products, processes, business models, or services which are then spread, transferred, or
commercialized. Innovation can be a product, a process, or service that is new, original, or
improved which creates social impact; examples are job generation, poverty alleviation. It also
creates economic impact. Example is financial effect that something, especially something new,
has on a situation or person. Another one it creates environmental impact especially mitigate
climate change. Innovation is also divided into two categories; the ideation and adoption. In
ideation, it includes creative thinking, design thinking, systems thinking and critical thinking.
Ideas that we are generating must be unique and original and the solutions we will provide is not
obvious to everyone and will benefit to our users in workplace, community or even in business.
According to Dr. Kamil Idris, intellectual property describes ideas, inventions,
technologies, artworks, music and literature, that are intangible when first created, but become
valuable in tangible form as products. Copyright is the legal protection extended to the owner of
the rights in an original work. In case of works of joint authorship, the economic rights shall be
protected during the life of the last surviving author and for fifty (50) years after his death. In line
with the rights to businesses, intellectual property rights, based what we learned in this session
is that it allows companies to protect their core business and research and development
activities, while creating a stronger negotiating posture for cross-licensing and counterclaims.
Patent is the title which gives the owner the right to keep others from exploiting the specific
invention mentioned in the patent. Why? Because it will protect the ornamental or functional
features of the inventions. It also gives owner the right to exclude anyone else from creating,
using, selling, or even importing the invention that has been patented. Trademark, this the
specific sign which a business identifies its services or product. This also helps differentiate the
services we will provided from other competitors.
Technology Readiness Levels, these are types of measurement we will used to assess
the maturity level of our technology or product. Using these TRLs will help owners in making
decisions concerning the development and transitioning of technology. It also allows engineers
and economists ro have consistent datum of reference for understanding technology evolution,
regardless of their technical background.

2. Will this be useful in your Techno Project?

This topic intellectual property and other relevant subtopics such as idea flow, innovation
process, overview of what is IP system, importance of it to everyone and the Technology
Readiness Levels will be useful to our techno project. We can know the proper way of
generating ideas and how important to dwell with the users, especially their weaknesses. All the
learnings this session we have learned will help us to improve our chosen techno project
especially on how we will design our product; its prototype considering if it is efficient to our
users. Another one is that, when we can introduce our project in the future, we have knowledge
how important patent, copyright, trademark in every business product or invention because this
will help safeguard our product wherein it can protect any product, design or process that meets
certain specifications to its originality.

3. How will you apply this to your business Idea.

First, since we know that users are very important in doing this project because it will
never exist or complete without them. We need to dwell with their weaknesses, providing the
best solution that they needed. If there are ideas that will help to improve our product, we will
talk about it or generate them one by one because it will lead us to the best idea. Also, since we
learned how important patent, trademark, and copyright as part of intellectual property, we will
never plagiarize or copy other’s idea. Instead, we will do research about our product to know
what the best and unique solution we can give to our users.

4. Any suggestions to improve the sessions

This session about Intellectual Property for Beginners is awesome. It taught us a lot on
how we can improve our business project ideas. If there will be needed to improve in this
session, it would be lessening the background noise while discussing the topic. We think the
best way is to make sure to mute all the participants so that the flow of the presentations will be
smooth and not be interrupted.
