LU_Q1_English8_Module2
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to
ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson.
At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check your
learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will
be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can
best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And
read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

Target

Research papers, performance tasks, paragraph writing, and a lot

more are just some of your requirements in school. However, these tasks
become easy because of various sources within your reach like books,
journals, and the internet.

In this module, you will learn the different ways on how to

acknowledge your sources by using conventions in citing your
references. In addition, you will learn why citing sources is important.

The Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) covered in

this module is to use conventions in citing sources EN8SS-IIIg-1.6.4

Objectives:

As learners of this module, you are expected to:

• define citation
• give the importance of citing sources
• discuss APA citation format
• use conventions in citing sources

Jumpstart

Have you tried writing a research paper? What should you

include in your paper to make it credible? Facts, evidences, and
articles from different sources are important to make your paper
credible. This lesson will help you acknowledge authors of the
ideas you have included in your paper.

Discover

Whenever you borrow ideas from books, web pages, or other

sources, you need to cite the sources for the following reasons:
A. To avoid plagiarism;
B. To acknowledge the real author;
C. To denote credibility of your work; and;
D. To allow readers to access and easily locate sources.

What is citation?

Citation is a reference to the source of the information you used in your written
work. This is your way of telling your readers that certain part of your work came
from another source.

What are the conventions in citing sources?

 The Modern Language Association (MLA) citation style is used for humanities
like English, History, and Drama.

 The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) is used in business, history, and fine
arts.

 The American Psychological Association (APA) citation style is used mainly

in the social sciences, like psychology, anthropology, sociology, as well as
education.

3
LU_Q1_English8_Module2
What citation style is frequently used in academic writing?

The American Psychological Association (APA) citation style is frequently

used by writers for documenting sources used in a research paper. This style requires
two elements for citing outside sources:

1. parenthetical and in-text citation

2. references list or bibliography

In this module, we will focus on The American Psychological Association

(APA) citation style. This format requires two elements for citing sources.

1. Citations are sources included in the body of the paper.

 In-text citation-the source is included in your text containing the

information from other sources which are copied either word-for-word
or paraphrased (stating in your own words but same idea)
Example: Briones (2020) said that education cannot be postponed
until the situation will return to normal.

 Parenthetical citation-the source is enclosed in parenthesis to

separate it from the text

 Example: “Education cannot wait for the situation to return to

normal.” (Briones, 2020, p 14)

Remember: Complete information of cited sources are found in the reference

list or bibliography.

2. References List or Bibliography is written in a separate sheet, usually on the

last page. The reference list page is the full information for any in-text citations
found in the body of the project. Entries are the names of the author, titles of
books, periodicals, and websites used by the writer or researcher.

How to write a bibliography using the APA format?

1. Print Sources
a. Books are the most common and reliable source of information.
The bibliography follows this pattern. Period (.) separates the entries
and the title of book is italicized, and following lines are indented.

- Author’s last name, Author’s Initial of First Name. (Publication

Year). Title. Publisher’s City: Publisher. Page Numbers.

Amado, C. (2001) Philippine Education: New Normal. Quezon

City: LU Press. pp. 200-222.

4
LU_Q1_English8_Module2
For books with four or more authors, write the name of the first
author only followed by et.al. which means and others.

Carlos Amado, et.al. (2001) Philippine Education: New

Normal. Quezon City: LU Press. Pp. 200-222.

b. Journals are scholarly published periodicals containing articles

written by researchers and other experts.

The basics of a Reference List entry for a journal article:

-Author or authors. The surname is followed by first initials.
-Year of publication of the article.
-Article title (in single inverted commas).
-Journal title (in italics).
-Volume of journal.
-Issue number of journal.
-Page range of article

Miranda, I. (2020) ‘Modular Learning in Public Schools.’

Philippine Educational Journal. 10 no.2. 22-31.

2. Online Sources. These refer to any materials or information from the

Internet

a. Website- a set of related web pages located under a single domain

name, typically produced by a single person or organization. Notable
examples are wikipedia.org, google.com, and amazon.com.

The entries for webpage with individual author:

Format: Last Name, First Name Initial. (Year, Month Date). Title of
page. Site name. URL

Example:

Price, D. (2018, March 23). Laziness does not exist. Medium.

https://humanparts.medium.com/laziness-does-not-
exist-3af27e312d01

5
LU_Q1_English8_Module2
If the page's author is not listed, start with the title instead. Also, include a
retrieval date when the page's content is likely to change over time.

Format: Title of page. (Year, Month Date). Site name. Retrieved Month
Date, Year, from URL

Example:

Tuscan white bean pasta. (2018, February 25). Budgetbytes.

Retrieved March 18, 2020, from https://www.budgetbytes.
com/tuscan-white-bean-pasta/Wikipedia article

b. E-books. These are books read in the computer or other electronic

devices. They are cited exactly as a printed book with the addition of
URL at the end.

Format: Author’s last name, First initial. (Year). Title of the book.
Publisher. URL.

Example:

Hood, L. R. R. (2013). I’m not crying wolf this time! Fairy Tale
Publishers. http://www.fairytalesonline.madeupurl
