Faculty of Management Studies (FMS)—Sample SOPs

Sample-1 (Computer Engineer with work-ex)

'I want to grow in my career and hold high positions of management. This way I can contribute more
usefully and make a bigger impact on my company's business. A career in management will also help me
reach my full potential.

After completing B.E in computer science in 2007, I was placed with IBM India and have worked as a Pre
Sales Specialist for over 3 years. I have learnt various aspects of sales and marketing and my thinking has
shifted from a purely technical perspective to a business perspective. My work involved making
proposals for clients--matching the needs of the client with the products the company had to offer. I
interacted with both the Sales teams and the Marketing team. This gave me a good understanding of
the processes in sales and marketing as well as a knowledge of the market for IT products.

I now want to do a full-time MBA from a top B-School such as FMS to gain wider exposure to all fields of
management. This will also acquaint me with different sectors of the business world and expose me to
real business problems through case studies, project work and interaction with the industry. The
guidance of the learned and experienced faculty of FMS and the interaction with peers from different
educational and professional backgrounds would indeed provide a great learning experience and
prepare me for higher positions of responsibility.'

Sample-2 (Fresh graduate—with good Extra-curricular profile)

'I want to pursue a career in management. I see myself holding high positions of responsibility in the
corporate sector where the decisions I take will have a wide impact on the employees or the business
prospects of the company.

I had my first taste of management when as the house captain in my school I was involved in organising
different events. Again in college, I was part of the core team for organising the technical festival. I
realized the importance of planning, dividing the work among the team members, clear communication,
close monitoring and coordination. I enjoyed taking on responsibility and working in groups.

I now want to have a formal education in management from a top B-School such as FMS. This will
acquaint me with the business world and expose me to real business problems through case studies,
project work and interaction with the industry. Learning under the guidance of the learned and
experienced faculty of FMS and in the company of peers from different educational and cultural
backgrounds would indeed widen my horizons and prepare me for a career in the corporate world.'

Sample-3 (Mechanical Engineer with work-ex)

'I want to pursue a career in management. I first understood the importance of managerial functions in
college when I was Students Coordinator for 2 years in Society of Mechanical & Industrial Engineers
(SOMIE) & Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and organised technical and cultural festivals.

1
After college, I was placed with Projects Coordination Department of Pipeline Project of Bathinda
Refinery(HMEL) as an Asst. Manager and have over two years' experience in this job. Here, I was
involved in the execution and management of a multi-crore project with numerous interdependent
activities and involvement of multiple agencies and vendors. I was also nominated for Professional
Project Management Certification Course. This has given me an exposure to planning and monitoring of
project activities; placing contracts and handling vendors; budgeting and managing project costs; and
much else.

I now want to do a full-time MBA from a top B-School such as FMS to grow in my career. Here, I will gain
wider exposure by learning concepts of marketing, finance, HRM, and production and the
interconnections among them for smooth functioning of a company. This will acquaint me with different
sectors of the business world and expose me to real business problems through case studies, project
work and interaction with the industry. The guidance of the learned and experienced faculty of FMS and
the interaction with peers from different educational and professional backgrounds would indeed
provide a great learning experience and prepare me for higher positions of responsibility.'

Sample-4 (Graduate in Journalism & Mass Communication)

'I want to pursue a career in advertising and marketing. I developed an interest in this field during my
graduation in journalism and mass communication.

I was involved with projects and internship related to advertising, journalism, films and media, and
discovered my journalistic and creative talent. I did my internship with The Indian Express where I got
two bylines and one credit line. I worked as a film editor and edited a song in the Bollywood movie 'De
Danadan'. I have dabbled in film-making and photography at a professional level and further developed
my creative talent.

I also prepared a dissertation on advertising which expanded my horizons and got me excited about a
career in advertising and marketing. I have developed a habit of observing people in their homes and at
malls--what they wear, how they maintain their homes, what products they buy, how brand-conscious
or price conscious they are, and so on. I have also started examining ads carefully and following them on
TV and the print media to see what segment of the market they were targeting and how they were
reaching out to their targeted consumer.

I now want to do a full-time MBA from a top B-School such as FMS and acquire a well-rounded
knowledge by learning concepts of marketing, finance, HRM, and production and the interconnections
among them for smooth functioning of a company. My MBA studies will acquaint me with different
sectors of the business world. It will expose me to real business problems through case studies, project

'I want to pursue a career in management. I see myself holding high positions of responsibility in the
corporate sector where the decisions I take will have a wide impact on the employees or the business
prospects of the company.

I am an electronics and communication engineer and have over two years' work experience in the
telecom sector. At Nokia Siemens Networks, I have been working on design, installation, operation and
maintenance of their networks, which has helped me understand the practical aspects of engineering. I
have also been exposed to how work is organised in a company and the different roles that managers
play. As a user of telecom services myself, I have realised how technology can enhance the range of
services to consumers. I feel that marketing of telecom services would be an exciting area to work in,
where technologies are being constantly upgraded and merged and consumer expectations are
expanding.

I therefore want to do a full-time MBA from a top B-School such as FMS. I will learn concepts of
marketing, finance, HRM, and production and the interconnections among them for smooth functioning
of a company. This will acquaint me with different sectors of the business world and widen my horizons.
This will expose me to real business problems through case studies, project work and interaction with
the industry. The guidance of the learned and experienced faculty of FMS and the interaction with peers
from different educational and professional backgrouds would indeed provide a great learning
experience and prepare me for a career in the corporate world.'

graduation at NIFT, New Delhi. Though my specialisation was Accessory Design, I got a wide exposure to
the apparel industry as a whole and an overview of the retail sector.

sales and marketing. [Give brief details of the projects you were involved with.]

I developed a habit of observing people in their homes and at malls--what they wore, how they
maintained their homes, what products they bought, how brand-conscious or price conscious they were,
and so on. I also started examining ads carefully and following them on TV and the print media to see
what segment of the market they were targeting and how they were reaching out to their targeted
consumer.

After graduation, I worked with an Exhibition Design Firm for a year or so. This further widened my
exposure. [Add something about your work-ex here.]

I now want to do a full-fledged MBA for a top B-School, such as FMS. [Add something from the last para
from your SOP after changing it.]

Sample-7 (Fresh ECE Engineer with good Extra-curricular profile)

3
"If you think you can, you can"--a simple principle that has guided me throughout my life.

I have always been good at academics and actively participated in different extracurricular activities
throughout school and college. My parents always stressed on all round development of the personality
and I tried my hand at different sports, quizzes (international and Indian), debates, music, drama, etc.
and won numerous prizes.

I held different positions of responsibility in school and college and was involved in organising events,
cultural evenings and technical festivals. This gave me an exposure to managing different people--peers,
seniors, and teachers; working in teams and providing direction; controlling the limited funds available;
and above all handling difficult situations and last-minute glitches.

Being an electronics and communication engineer, I worked on a number of projects related to telecom
technology and did my summer training at Tata Teleservices Ltd., Noida. This gave a good understanding
of how a telecom company works and the range of telecom/internet services that it offers and can offer
in the future with the coming of new generation technologies and convergence of technologies.

But before taking up a job, I would like to complete my MBA from a reputed institute such as FMS. I will
get a well-rounded knowledge of all management disciplines and they are work in an integrated fashion.
Through project work and case studies, I will get an exposure to the actual problems faced by companies
and what solutions are possible.

I look forward to being a part of such a pioneering institute, such as FMS.'

Sample-8 (Fresh Computer engineer with good extra-curricular profile)

'I am a computer engineer and have worked on some projects which has helped me become proficient
in the use of C++[You can add something here]. During my summer training at Reliance Communications
Ltd., Ghaziabad I first familiarised myself with the design of their application software and then came up
with useful suggestions to sort out some of the problems they were facing. Some of my suggestions
were later adopted.

I find working in the field of software development interesting, and would therefore like to specialise in
Systems during my MBA. And what better place than FMS to do MBA (full-time) from. Learning under
the highly learned faculty at FMS would indeed be an enriching experience. With a full-fledged formal
education in management, I will be able to see 'the big picture', and be prepared to hold high
management positions.

I have held different positions of responsibility both in school and at college and have learnt the
importance of management roles--planning, working as a team, and coordinating the activities
delegated to different team members. I find myself to be essentially a people’s person and enjoy
working in group. I enjoy taking on responsibility and the sense of importance attached with it as
everyone looks up to you to take charge and give directions.

Hence, I would find a management career very satisfying.'

Sample-9 (Fresh ECE engineer who wants to be an Entrepreneur)

4
'I have a strong desire to be an entrepreneur and start my own company. I think this is what most MBA
graduates want to do eventually. I find the stories of entrepreneurs very inspiring, particularly of IIM-A
graduates given in the book--'Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish'.

My desire to be my own boss comes from a sense of independence that I have developed since the age
of 11, when I first shifted to my school hostel and learnt to fend for myself. Since then I have been a
hosteller and been happy organising my own life. I have acquired a sense of discipline and a habit of
working regularly and systematically, with effective management of time.

I am doing my electronics and communication engineering and have a keen interest in information
technology as well, as the future will see convergence of these technologies in many areas. Ideas for
new startups keep popping up in my head, but they remain half-baked ideas at best.

I therefore want to have a thorough grounding in all management disciplines, understand how
companies are run, how they obtain funding, how they manage risks, how they study and understand
the market, how they identify prospective clients, etc. An MBA (full-time) from a reputed institute such
as FMS would provide me all that and much more. Interaction with industry and successful
entrepreneurs with help me give shape to the nebulous ideas floating around in my head. I will get an
opportunity to learn from my colleagues who would bring knowledge and experience from different
fields.'
Sample-10 (ECE Engineer with work-ex)

'I have done my engineering in electronics and communication and have been working as a SAP
Technical Consultant for the past 3 years. Working on SAP have made me understand how the activities
of different departments are intricately interwoven--how inventory management is linked to production
planning and in turn to sales forecasting--and how ERP systems can enhance the overall effectiveness of
the organisation by making information available in real time and prompting decision-making at
different levels of management.

I acquired a good understanding of operations and logistics as I was working on the Materials
Management module. This experience has aroused my interest in areas such as sales and marketing,
financial management and human resource management of which I know little.

I now want to acquire holistic knowledge of all disciplines of management and how they are seamlessly
integrated in the functioning of an organisation. This will help me grow in the field of IT/Management
Consultancy.

I am therefore applying to your MBA (full-time) course. This will acquaint me with different sectors of
the business world and expose me to real business problems in different sectors through case studies,
project work and interaction with the industry. The guidance of the learned and experienced faculty and
the interaction with peers from different educational and professional backgrounds would indeed
provide a great learning experience and extend my horizons.'

SAMPLE STATEMENT OF PURPOSE - MBA EXAMPLE ESSAY

5
If one were to ask my friends to describe me they would describe me as a very pleasant, diverse,
activeand intelligent woman. I think one of my most distinguishing characteristics is the diversity of
experiencesI possess. I am a science student with a flair for the arts. I am a woman with technical
aptitude and aninterest in management. I also have a passion for traveling and understanding different
cultures of theworld. All these elements have given me a very broad outlook, with varying degrees of
knowledge in arange of topics. I strongly believe that although some are not related directly, all these
qualities willinfluence my graduate work.My Engineering degree has given a strong foundation to my
analytical skills since civil designing involvesa lot of long, complex and intricate calculations and the
application of basic math skills. Over the past fouryears, I have been working part-time with my family
firm, SnMTech Systems. I am also the co-founder andactive member with FOE - Friends of the
Environment. I have assisted in the installation of Enterprise-wide Resource Planning (ERP) System at
Blotech, a major Engineering Company. More than what I havestudied in school and college, it has been
these experiences that have shaped the person that I am today.I believe that this unique blend of
experiences has made me a woman with an original point of view. Thisblend has given me a broader
perspective to and a good understanding of life and a goal to aim for.Among other things, I have this
diversity of experience to offer xxxx University. My most substantialaccomplishment has been the
success of the software upgradation project that I managed at SnMTechSystems Pvt. Ltd., yyyyyyyyy,
where I have been working as a part time Associate Intern - ManagementInformation Systems since
1994.During the first two years of my work at SnMTech, I had an opportunity to observe and work with
theexisting system being used. Some of the software packages being used were outdated versions. I
havealways been in touch with the latest software packages thanks to the powerful PC I have at home
and amquite used to working with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) environment. At the office, there was
greatdeal of chaos while preparing reports that involved use of more than one software since
compatibilitybetween packages usually posed a problem. The difficulty we faced putting different files
together led tothe final report appearing rather haphazard sometimes.I believe in providing and
maintaining non-negotiable high standards and service. I recognized thatshifting to a newer GUI based
software would not only dramatically improve our documentation quality, but also increase productivity
at the workplace. Presenting the pros and cons to the management of theupgradation was a very
challenging task. I was asked to prepare a proposal regarding the upgradation ofthe firm's software.
Initially, I imagined this project would be rather simple but it turned out to be amongthe most
challenging and rewarding experiences of my life.Through a firm-wide survey of operators and several
one-on-one discussions of their own preferencesand solutions, I found that while everybody wanted an
upgradation, they had doubts since they wouldhave to learn a whole set of new skills. In order to
prepare a budget, I procured quotations from variousvendors and analyzed possible combinations. I
realized the necessity of a training course for theoperators because most of them were not familiar with
the GUI interface. I examined the various trainingclasses that offered private in-house training for the
employees. After a detailed analysis, I presented myreport to the management in the next meeting.
They were pleased with my efforts and pleasantlysurprised at the cost of the project since it seemed to
be comparatively less than what they hadanticipated.Once I was given the go-ahead, the next hurdle
was to implement the proposal and coordinate theupgrading. To avoid any disturbance to the
company's work, training sessions were planned after workinghours. The upgrading took a week and the
training of the operators took another two weeks. The reallytough period started once the training
6
personnel left. The management felt that it was my responsibility tosee that the operators didn't face
any problems once they actually started using the new softwarepackages. I put in 60 to 70-hour weeks
for the next three weeks before everyone was comfortable withthe new system. While the benefits of
using these packages were not immediately tangible, a few monthslater our clients acknowledged that
the quality of the reports we sent them had improved considerably. Infact, a year later our firm decided
to upgrade all of its software packages. I consider this to be a tacitcompliment for my efforts.

take on challenging situations through the core values of focus, patience and perseverance.Inspired by
his thoughts, I decided to follow his ideals in life. It was these ideals which helpedme in doing complete
justice to the position of Managing Committee Head at M.S RamaiahCollege of Arts, Science and
Commerce, Bangalore. Serving at this position I successfullyorganized several intercollegiate fests and
inter-class competitions. Under my supervision, theintercollegiate fest of 2012 saw a record turnout of
25 colleges from Bangalore and Karnataka. On interacting with students and lecturers of participating
colleges, I was gratified to learn thatthe fest was a monumental success and my efforts were being
praised. I also collaborated with a

fellow student and organized customized college merchandise in the form of „hoodies‟. In

orderto ensure success of the initiative, I had surveyed fellow students and lecturers to gain an insighton
their sense of style. My management experiences during my graduation days required me to interact
withseveral groups of individuals and deploy my intellect to get the dead done. I developed an abilityto
function as an integral part of a team, be responsible, to easily befriend people and convincethem of my
opinion. I also excelled at resolving conflicts and getting people to work with eachother despite their
differences. Working my way through these events, I however realized that itwas difficult for me to
choose between helping someone and making a politically correctdecision. I am emotionally drawn and
my emotions in some cases tend to overpower my practical thinking abilities. Realizing this to be my

When one is awakened to the possibilities around him, one can’t help but be useful. A strive to be
usefulto the best of my capacity, the tenacity to create a difference to the lives of people around me and
apassion to leave this world a better place to live, have has always guided me in all my pursuits. The year
2001 marks a watershed in my life. Besides getting into IIT-Delhi that year, I was alsointroduced to a
humanitarian based NGO - The Art of Living. What started as a week-long meditation andself-
development workshop was soon to become an important tool in my hands to empower people totake
control of their lives. Having seen the positive and almost miraculous effects of this workshop indrug de-
addiction, boosting academic performance and getting people rid of depression and suicidaltendencies, I
was convinced of its need in our present society. I pursued it with almost an evangelisticzeal and
personally introduced this workshop to more than 100 students at IIT and became a volunteerfor this
organization. I actively participated in its hugely successful nation-wide campaign - ‘Volunteer forBetter
India’ and secured sponsorship worth 15 lakhs for the purpose. I was involved in organizing
andconducting free meditation sessions for many corporates under the ‘Meditate India’ campaign. I was
alsoactive in organizing volunteer base and building public opinion in favor of ‘India Again
Corruption’undertaking of the Art of Living. Apart from associating myself with these campaigns I have
beendedicating my time towards organizing regular workshops, tree plantation and blood donation
drives, organizing and conducting free health and happiness workshops in the slums. Last year I was
gracedwith an honor of becoming an Art of Living teacher. The ideals of social inclusion which I practiced
on theground volunteering for AOL, also shaped my career plan to eventually become an entrepreneur,
employpeople and give back to the society.Started my professional career in IT with a company
developing solutions for hotel industry, I moved toconsulting early in my career. I have always loved to
challenge myself and never restricted myself to aparticular domain or technology. I’ve gained wealth of
invaluable consulting experience working forconsulting firms like Deloitte and Sapient for projects in
diverse domains such as eCommerce, USHealthcare and Global Markets for clients cutting across
geographies. I am currently deployed on clientsite to Royal Bank of Scotland for one of the central and
mission critical application having inter-linkagesto both the upstream and downstream systems. My role
is that of a Sr. Developer and L3 Support. Itinvolves regular enhancements to the application and
collaborating with various groups acrossgeographies to help them seamlessly interact with our
application. Quite often it necessitates holdingdiscussion with various stakeholders to understand their
system and help them restructure and reconciletheir data and processes to align with our application.

8
Becoming an answer to this challenging role in ashort span of time has earned me wide appreciation
from all quarters.Having spent over 8 years in IT industry implementing projects across various verticals,
I have gained anin-depth understanding of the development cycle of a project till its final delivery and
client acceptance.Interacting with diverse, cross cultural clients, suggesting technology solutions to their
business needs, owning and participating in the success of their ideas have shaped my consulting skills.
While continuingto enhance my consulting skills, I have been intrigued by the marketing and sales
pursuits and havealways wanted to contribute towards that. This would not only require a sound
knowledge of technologybut also entail an understanding of client business and how we as an
organization can model ourcapabilities to pitch in and address their gaps and provide credible
solutions.Graduating out of an MBA college I want to see myself playing the role of a Project Manager
aggressivelyengaged in a sales pitch and seeing the project through a successful delivery. An experience
of this kindwill equip me in winning the confidence of the stakeholders, handling large teams, and
actuating an ideafrom its inception to a successful product. Such an experience will thereby gear me
towards my nearterm goal of setting up a medium scale IT enterprise. It shall help me promote business
idea to theinvestors and collaborate with people to shape it.I am looking at an MBA program as an
important step towards actualization of my current goals. At ageneric level, this program will further
enhance my instincts and develop a structured approach towards

How to Choose between a Regular MBA Program and an HR Specializaon Program

If you are someone who is looking forward to pursue an MBA, you must have heard about theregular
MBA programs and the niche oering made by instutuons such as XLRI HR, TISS, or IIMK-LSM(Labour
Science Management) starng this year onwards.A lot of students are under the impression that the
specializaon does NOT maer as long asyou are joining any of the stalwarts instuon including the
XLRI HR program or TISS MA inHuman Resources etc. We are driven by the brand name so much that
oen we fail to analysewhether one would succeed in a parcular eld over a long period.Hence, it is
important to choose wisely between a HR specialisaon and a regular MBAprogram.1.

HR vs Other Domains in an MBA

The criteria for joining an HR program cannot be reduced to whether one has people skills ornot. One
should look at the various roles and responsibilies that are undertaken by thegraduates in each
eld.Both HR and Markeng program require you to possess strong communicaon skills;
however, comparing the role of a HR department and an Area Sales Manager would be akin to
comparingapples to oranges.2.

On average, HR Salaries might be lower than Other Funcons

9
Salaries of most departments have a strong variable component which is usually measured on ayear on
year basis. This provides them a huge margin in terms of incenve.Though the HR professionals also
carry a measurable target; however, it is not as high as theother funcons. While the Markeng and
Finance funcons are rewarded with high incenves, these funcons also entail a huge risk factor3.

Growth in an Organizaon

In other elds, there are various avenues for growth, but the HR professionals are constrainedin a way
because it takes longer period to reach the top management posion. You would alsousually nd a CEO
from domains such as Markeng, Finance or Operaons.Other roles have a direct impact on both the
top-line and the boom-line revenues of acompany; however it is dicult to chart out the same for the
HR domain.4.

HR provides a good Work-Life Balance

Since a HR professional does not directly drive the monthly or the yearly targets for a company, thus, this
funcon carries a comparavely lower stress level. However, this does not necessarily

I secured an admission in Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute, one of the premier engineering
institutesin India because of an excellent performance in high school which placed me in top 1% of all
students. At theundergraduate level too I performed with distinction by securing an aggregate of 7.8/10
till the sixth semester which secured me a rank in the top 10% in the class of 72 students. I have been
awarded with the prestigiousJRD TATA Memorial Trust Scholarship for securing greater than 75% in
2005-06, 2006-07 & 2007-08 in myundergraduate studies.When I attended “International conference on
Role of Higher Educational Institutes in Universalization of Elementary Education”, I came to know how
“Enterprise Resource Planning [ERP]” can be utilized indesigning a software-based framework which will
enable any institute to set up an integrated databaseassisting it in smoother administration and
resource utilization.

Before pursuing a post-graduation course, I decided to have a work experience.18 months of my job at
