Clarification on Traffic Studies
Location of vehicular access point

 Direct access from expressways, slip roads, acceleration or

deceleration lanes, bus or taxi bays and major arterials roads are
not allowed.
 For commercial and shophouse developments, where a rear
service road is available or safeguarded, access shall be taken
from the rear service road.
 Where a development is accessible from two public streets, it
shall be designed to take access from the road which is classified
as a lower category in the Road Line Plan (RLP).
 Access points shall be suitably located to ensure smooth flow of
traffic on roads. Access points are to be located at a safe
distance from road junctions, road bends, pedestrian crossing,
bus-stops, existing opposite access points etc
 Services access to electric sub-station and bin centre shall all be
taken from within the site. Separate access directly from the
public street is not allowed.

Task for Student
1. Please select a location in Singapore for the proposed town and
design its layout to achieve the following objectives .
a. Clean Air
b. People feel relaxed
c. Everyone feel welcome
d. Easy to cross
e. Shade and shelter
f. Things to see and do
g. People feel safe
h. People choose to walk and cycle
i. Not too noisy
j. Places stop and rest
Task for Student
2. Please conduct the following steps to forecast the traffic demand
generated by the proposed town

Step 1: Trip generation

Please use two methods ( Trip rate method and cross classification
method ) to forecast the trip production .
Please use trip rate method to forecast the trip attraction.
Please provide the trip generation for the proposed town.

Step 2: Trip distribution

It is assuming that 30% of the trips attracted by the various land use
are from the town. Please forecast the trip distribution to other
regions/towns in Singapore based on the population distribution among
various regions/towns.

2. Please conduct the following steps to forecast the traffic demand
generated by the proposed town

Step 3: Mode Split

Please set your target mode split to achieve the planning
objectives/parameters to estimate the trips using various transport
mode.

3. Please estimate the peak hour trips for various transport mode
based on the following travel pattern obtained from similar town.

following parameters except buses.
 Vehicle Occupancy

 PCU factor
Task for Student
5. Please estimate how may bus services are required to meet the
traffic demand generated by the town based on its peak hour trips.
Assumptions shall be made based on the bus capacity when reached
the town and their frequencies.

6. Please estimate how many MRT stations shall be provided around the
town based on the MRT trips and assuming the MRT capacity when
reach the respective station and their headway.

7. Please design internal walking and cycling network based on the

planning objectives and the respective demand in taking walking and
cycling modes.

8. Please estimate the number of parking lots required by the town

based on LTA’s car park guideline.
