THE TALIBAN

WHO ARE THEY?

• The word "Taliban" is Pashtun and means


"seekers or students". They were a group
that emerged in the late 1990s. in northern
Pakistan, after the withdrawal of Soviet
Union troops from Afghanistan.
WHAT DO THEY WANT?

• They want to rule the country to establish a


doctrine. In 1996 Kabhul was under the
control of the Taliban, from that moment
they impose the 'sharia' or Islamic law. For
this reason, men were forced to wear long
beards, television, movies, music, the
schooling of girls from the age of 10 were
forbiden, as well as women forced to wear
burqas.
THE VICTORY OF THE UNITED
STATES

• In 2001 the terrorist group Al-Qaeda


prepared an attack demolishing the Twin
Towers. Thousands of people died, exactly
2,996 people, including 265 deaths in
the four crashed planes. Consequently, the
US military decided to invade
the country.With the help of former
mujahideen groups from the Northern
Alliance anti-Taliban coalition, the United
States and its allies soon overthrew the
Taliban government.
WHY DID THE UNITED STATES
ARMY LEAVE?

• President Donald J. Trump wanted to end


the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, so he
struck a deal with the Taliban, declaring that
US forces would leave Afghanistan in mid-
2021. President Biden supported him and
the U.S.A troop withdrew.
• Nine days later the Taliban conquered their
first provincial capital.
WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW?

• The commanders have ensured that the people will be safe.


But enough reports of brutality and intimidation have
emerged to send waves of refugees to Kabul. And now, the
capital's airport has become a scene of despair and chaos
as thousands of Afghans try to flee the country at any cost.
