CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study aims to assess the acceptance of potential COVID-19 vaccination, the

preference for vaccine attributes, as well as the influencing factors on vaccination

acceptance among the residents in Barangay Bibincahan. This information is critical to

ensure that future vaccine plans and immunization programs against COVID-19 are well

prepared.

This research will be utilizing its design as descriptive because it predominantly

applies the description needed to evaluate in this study. According to Ethridge (2004),

descriptive studies may be characterized as simply the attempt to determine, describe

or identify what is, while analytical research attempts to establish why it is that way or

how it came to be. This approach is used to describe variables rather than to test

predicted relationship between variables. Fox, W. & Bayat, M.S. (2007) explained that

descriptive research is aimed at casting light on current issues or problems through a

process of data collection that enables them to describe the situation more completely

than was possible without employing this method. Not only it identifies relevant

variables, but also identifies the characteristics on the social phenomenon in this study.
Respondents

Respondents are those who are have been invited to participate in particular study

and have actually taken part in the study. It is derived from the sample that is

constructed for quantitative study. The respondents will contribute this study as their

answers will rely to the conclusion of this research.

The respondents of this study are the residents in Barangay Bibincahan, Sorsogon

City. Each of the resident’s profile comprises of their name, age (can be a teenager,

adult, or senior citizen), gender preference, occupation, home location, health status

and family status.

Sampling Design

Simple random sampling is the basic sampling technique where the researchers

select a group of subjects (a sample) for study from a larger group (a population). Each

individual is chosen entirely by chance and each member of the population has an

equal chance of being included in the sample. Every possible sample of a given size

has the same chance of selection (Easton et. Al.)

The researchers will utilize this sampling design for the reason that they are going

to select subset of participants or respondents in Barangay Bibincahan where all

individuals have an equal chance of being a respondent in this chosen research topic.
Sources of Data

Primary and secondary sources of data were used in this survey. Primary data

collected through questionnaires was the key form of data. It will be obtained as new

sources of data and thus original in nature. The survey questionnaires will be distributed

to the respondents in Barangay Bibincahan through door-to-door safety interaction.

Secondary data, on the other hand, are gathered data and information from the

internet, newspapers, and any related sources for this analysis. The primary sources

are identified, discussed, interpreted, and summarized. In this analysis, secondary

sources enable the primary sources to provide more fruitful data for the research

introduction and related review of literature and studies.

Research Instrument

The study encompasses a large number of respondents and given the time

constraints the researchers decided to use the survey-questionnaire as the instrument

of the study. Questionnaires are certainly one of the key sources of data collection

throughout the research effort, and research must ensure that it is "valid, reliable and

unambiguous" when designing one (Richard & Schmidt, 2002). Questionnaires may

indeed be designated and used to obtain significant volumes of information from a

number of respondents. Considering the amount of data collection, which have a

number of advantages: which are typically inexpensive to manage; much less practice

is necessary to produce and can be easily analyzed once completed (Wilkinson &

Birmingham 2003).
The questionnaire utilizes a standardized format that involves multiple choices and

closed questions. The basis for the questionnaire was focused on the objectives and

research questions to which the research aims to provide a response. To begin, the first

part of the questionnaire involves the personal information of the respondents which

goes as follows: name, age (can be a teenager, adult, or senior citizen), sex or gender

preference, occupation, home location, health status, and family status. The second

part will utilize the Likert scale and it is defined as a set of statements (items) offer for a

real or hypothetical situation under study. Participants are asked to show their level of

agreement (from strongly disagree to strongly agree) with the given statement. In this

research stipulate the respondent’s acceptance towards in vaccination in COVID-19 as

a dominant factor that influence his/her life in pre-determined situations by taking a

vaccination.

Data Gathering Procedure

After the approval of instrument, the researchers will be using a survey to gather

data from the residents in Barangay Bibincahan, Sorsogon city. The researchers made

use of a sample size of 50 respondents from the residents of Barangay Bibincahan in

conducting a survey. Each are surveyed in a variety of residents from 5 different

locations in Bibincahan. The handling of questionnaires will be done personally by the

researchers and will also be facilitated by the retrieval of responses.

Statistical Treatment

The responses of the residents in Barangay Bibincahan will determine the degree

of acceptance of vaccination programs by the government. Each of their collected

answers will be analyzed through descriptive statistics. This study will outline its

statistical method through frequency; where the number of times each variable occurs,

measures of central tendency; where finding the average is performed through mode,

mean, and median, and lastly the measures of variability; where the distribution of

scores that display the degree to which scores vary across the average.
