ART MODULE 5: PAINTINGS OR

MURALS

Activity 1.

Color the mural design.

What are mural paintings?

One notable thing about murals is that they are not ordinary, small-scale poster art. The word mural
comes from the Latin word muralla which means a wall.

Mural paintings are large works of art that are displayed prominently. The work of art is painted on a
wall or on a ceiling of a building. Therefore, it requires a lot of work and it is usually done by more than
one person.

One good thing about murals is that they are an example of utilitarian art or Junctional art. We can say
that murals are public art also as they are meant for the public to see. They can be used to create a
political or environmental statement. They can also be used for product and business advertisement
campaigns. They easily catch attention and are effective for campaigns.

Most murals are found outdoors, but they can also be used to decorate the interiors of buildings. You
can see restaurants, public buildings, and churches with murals inside their buildings.

We also have city murals that can decorate the landscape of cities along major city roads.

How are these murals made?

Here are the basic preparations for mural painting:

1. Draw the scaled-down version first. It is important to create a scaled-down version of your design or
mural. It will help you make the right proportion of the elements of your drawings once they are on the
wall.

2 . Look for an appropriate place for your mural. You do not paint on any wall. The location must be
considered, and the wall must be prepared before you paint. Get the necessary permission to paint on
the wall.

3. Then, prepare the wall. There are many preparations to be done to makethe painting attractive. You
need to add primer or basecoats before the actual paints.
4.Prepare the brush and paints to be used. Prepare different sizes of brushes to be used, as well as the
paints needed for the artwork.

Lines and Shape Contrast in Murals

The principle of contrast in arts is used when there are differences or variations in the elements, such as
color, lines, shapes, values, direction, and texture. The principle of contrast adds more variety and
interest over the whole mural work. However, this variety should unite the different elements.

Too little contrast makes an artwork simple and plain while having contrast makes the artwork more
dramatic and expressive. However, too much contrast can be psychologically confusing.

One can create contrast with the use of various lines and shapes all throughout the mural letters and
objects in the painting.

ART MODULE 6: COLORS

Activity 1. Color and Identify what is being asked below.

You have produced different kinds of art forms. By this time, you can express what you feel on paper,
canvas, or on a computer screen. Let us review the role of color in these works. Classifying Colors

Color Wheel

The choice of color is truly essential when it comes to paintings. The right mix of colors, shades, tones,
and contrast create a dazzling effect in an artwork. Most artists explore how they can create this effect
by experimenting with colors. They mix and match colors on their palettes until they get the right
combination. An artwork can convey joy, sadness, or excitement through the use of colors. The right
combination of colors makes an artwork more attractive.
If you will recall, colors are classified as primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. The primary colors are
yellow, red, and blue. The secondary colors are those that result from their combination, such as green,
violet, and orange. How are the tertiary colors formed?

Primary Colors

Red Yellow Blue

Secondary Colors

Orange Green Violet

Now, there are the neon colors. These colors are bright fluorescent-like colors (with glow-in-the-dark-
effect). They are man-made colors that produce glowing, bright colors. The usual neon colors we see
today are the orange, yellow, yellowgreen, turquoise, and hot pink.

To make your mural art different, you can use neon colors. Make sure to exercise balance in using these
colors. These colors can be glaring and hurting to the eyes. There are different ways to reduce this glare
and focus on what the message is. One way is the use of space. There should be enough space between
letters. The bright effect of the neon color can cause the overlapping of letters if the space between the
letters is too close. As a result, the message cannot be read properly. The letters or the actual message
should be easily seen and not crowded by other images so people can read the message easily. Using
the shadow effect can make the letters and images darker or lighter.

Activity 2. Discuss the following!

ART MODULE 7: Form and Function

Activity 1. Draw an object from your surrounding in the box with the given shapes and form.
Make it creative and beautiful.

SQUARE TRIANGLE CIRCLE

Some people think that works of art are just for display, that they have no other use except for their
aesthetic designs. This is where you can prove them wrong. Arts can be integrated with crafts. Crafts use
the principles of art to make their products more attractive. A craft can be both useful and attractive.

One of the famous lines for this is the famous quote of Chicago architect Louis Sullivan which states that
"form follows function." For example, the empty cans or containers you have at home can be reused.
This way, you are also helping the environment. You are prolonging the life of an object. They don't have
to end in the garbage bin.

You can look around for objects that are no longer used. Observe their shape, dimensions, and what
they were used for before they were discarded. Imagine other possible uses of those objects.

Help improve your community by undertaking a community project on recycling art. This is a project
where people can participate. One project is waste management.

In the Philippines, not everyone knows and practices recycling.

There are many projects that can help or benefit the community. Landscaping and gardening are some
of the ways to improve the community. You can help in the design of the land and even in the choice of
plants. The size of the plant and its color should be considered in the design. Review the elements and
principles of art. Apply them in your design.

Cleanliness should be encouraged for the health of the people and to keep orderliness in the place.
Cleanliness also teaches discipline. What is one way to keep a place clean?
One way is by encouraging people to throw their garbage in the proper places. They should also
segregate them properly. How can this be done? Make attractive containers or garbage cans. Use the
available materials around to recycle. Instead of throwing away the container, reuse it.

There are many ways of turning your empty container into a work of art. Be creative, think of ways by
which this piece or pieces of discarded materials can be reused. Do not stick to the original designs of
containers. Be imaginative!

Useful Crafts from Scrap Materials

The Internet can be a source of information on how discarded materials can be reused. One of these
ideas makes use of big empty plastic bottles and pages from a glossy magazine. Cut the pages in any size
and shape. Glue these pieces around the outer surface of the bottle. You can add buttons, or caps to add
texture to your craft. If varnish is available, you can apply it over your work. Show your finished work to
your classmates and friends. Welcome their comments for the improvement of your next work.

Let us Discuss!

1. How can we recycle materials?

2. What ideas will help one create new products from trash?
