I. General Course Information:
- Course Titles: English 3
- Semester: Semester 2, 2021 - 2022
- Level: B1 – B1+
- Location: HNUE
- Contact hours per week: 8 hours
- Assumed Background: English 3 is a compulsory course for the students whose first major at university is not English
but aim to reach the level of B2 of English Proficiency according to the Common European Framework (CEFR) as
their graduation prerequisite. Leaners are assumed to be at level B1 of English Language Proficiency to be eligible
and sufficient for these courses.
- Course Description: This course is designed to boost students’ English language proficiency from lower B1 level to
B1+ according to Common European Framework of Reference.
II. Learning Objectives: After successfully completing this course, students should be able to:
understand straightforward information about everyday topics, identifying both general messages and specific
details, provided people speak clearly in a familiar accent
understand the main points in straightforward texts on subjects of personal or professional interest
start a conversation on topics that are familiar or of personal interest and can keep it going by expressing and
responding to suggestions, opinions, attitudes, advice, etc.
produce a coherent well-organized academic paragraph
In terms of Listening, students will be able to:
 understand straightforward information about everyday topics, identifying both general messages and specific
details, provided people speak clearly in a familiar accent
 follow a lecture or talk within their own field, if the subject matter is familiar and the presentation is clearly
structured
 follow TV programs on topic of personal interest when people speak clearly
 understand information in announcements and other recorded, factual texts if they are delivered in clear standard
speech
In terms of Speaking, students will be able to:
 describe an incident, making the main points clear
 express feelings about something they have experienced
 present clear detailed description on a wide range of subjects related to my field of interests.
 explain a view point on a topic
In terms of Reading, students will be able to:
 understand the main points in straightforward texts on subjects of personal or professional interest
 skim simple, factual texts in magazines, brochures or on a website
 scan basic texts and understand relevant facts and information
 identify the meaning of words in certain contexts
In terms of Writing, students will be able to:
 produce clear, well-structured, detailed, academic paragraphs on a wide range of subjects
 describe personal experience and events
 give reasons in support of or against a particular point of view on a topical issue
 show wide use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices

IV. Assessment
1. Assessment summary

2. Assessment details:
Attendance: Students are required to attend more than 80% of the total class hours. If students do not, they cannot take
the end-of-term test.
A. Discussion
- Type: In-class
- Learning objective assessed: 2,5
- Due date: The discussion activity is organized in every session, in which learners participate in various in-class
discussion activities under teachers’ instruction and facilitation. Teachers randomly pick up several students and
assign marks. Every student needs at least one discussion mark by the end of the semester.
- Time allowed: 15 minutes approximately
B. Writing Assignments:
- Type: In-class and at home
- Learning objective assessed: 4,5
- Due date: Writing assignments are due to take place every week
- Task description: Students will write the first draft of the assignment at home and then the next writing session
would be spent editing and checking the writing for the second draft.
C. Midterm Test: Listening, Speaking and Reading
- Type: During class
- Learning objective assessed: 2,4,5
- Due date: Week 4
- Time allowed: up to 1 hour/ each
- Task description:
+ Listening: multiple choice questions, sentence completion
+ Speaking: compare and contrast photos, discussion
+ Reading: multiple choice questions, multiple matching, gapped text
E. Homework Assignment: Teachers check homework fulfillment at the beginning of the class. Each time a student
fails to completely fulfill the assigned homework that week is equivalent to 5% extracted from the final ongoing
assessments of English 3
End-of-term Test: English 3
V. Course Policies
- Students who fail to attend at least 80% are not eligible to sit the final exam.
- Coming late (10 minutes after class time) twice is equal an absence.
- Items (for which no extension has been granted) submitted after the due date and time, incur a late submission
penalty. The penalty is at the rate of 2 marks (per day) of the total available marks for that particular piece of
assessment.
Requests for the granting of extensions must be made in writing (not via email) to the lecturers at least 24 hours
prior to the submission date. The request must also contain documentation satisfactorily supporting the request. If
an extension is approved, the new agreed date for submission will be noted.
