BACKGROUND
Tanzania Telecommunication Corporations formerly known as Tanzania
Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL) was established by An Act of
the Parliament, 'The Tanzania Telecommunications Company Incorporation
Act of 1993'.

The Company came into operation following a split of the former parastatal
organization known as Tanzania Posts and
Telecommunications Company (TP&TC) and began
operation on Jan 1, 1994. The split was due to the
government's move to liberalize
communications sector in the country, and due to this
separation four parastatal entities were formed
namely;

The Tanzania Posts Corporation (TPC), Tanzania Telecommunications

Company Limited (TTCL), Tanzania Postal Bank (TPB), and Tanzania
Communication Commission (TCC) now known as Tanzania
Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA).

Subsequent to continued economic liberalization policy of the Government

of Tanzania, TTCL was privatized on 23rd February 2001, where by a
Consortium MSI of the Netherlands and Detecon of Germany acquired 35%
shares of the company from the Government of Tanzania. However, the
Government of Tanzania has effective from 23rd June 2016 fully
repossessed TTCL ownership by 100%.Therefore until 1st of February 2018,
TTCL was 100% owned by the Government of Tanzania.
ORGANIZATION
INTRODUCTION
On 8th December 2021, 21 students with 1 lecture went for a trip to TTCL
headquarters which are located at Posta, Dar es salaam. We arrived there at 9:00
am. We planned to visit the company and learn several things including their day-
to-day activities and operations.

TRIP OBJECTIVE
The objective of the trip was to get to know the daily
Operations and activities conducted by the company and how they managed to
provide services to their customers. Also, to get familiar to the technology that is
used by the company.

FIELD OBSERVATION
We were guided by a tour host who explained in details about several operational
departments in the company such as;

A) The Transmission department

The tour guide introduced us to the workers or operators of the
department and told us that the transmission department is the
department which deals with the distribution of information and also to
manage and control either physically or through software the flow and
distribution of information.
Also, told us that in transmission they use microwave and fiber optics in
the distribution of data and information throughout the country.
The tour guide also explained to us how the costumer’s phone is involved in
transmission system. Where by he told us that when the costumer calls or
sends a message, he or she automatically the process starts by requesting
to the antenna or tower near to him or her. When the phone chip is
registered, the HLR (Home location Registered) is initiated and recorded
and whenever the costumer calls from a location different from that
location which he or she was registered then the VLR (Visitor Location
registered) is initiated and recorded.
Also, he told us that the transmission department supports the NOC
(Network operation Center)

B) The network operation center

This is a department which visually controls, monitor, manage and
troubleshoot several malfunctions that may occur during the transmission
system and other services provided by the company.
The tour guide introduced us to the head of department and the head of
department introduced us to the other workers in the department.
The department also has workers who control, monitor and troubleshoot
the TPESA, Normal SMS and USSD.
The department also has workers who control the national network
backbone, where by TTCL is the one in charge of it. The workers of this
department monitor all the process and give out alert or information to the
responsible whenever malfunction occur.

C) Server room
The tour guide took us to the server room but we weren’t supposed to
enter with shoes so as to prevent dust which may directly affect the
servers. whereby that server room stores all the data cord and network
distribution scheme of the entire country.
He explained to us how they have channeled the server and how they have
equipped security of that area so as to prevent data loss and unnecessary
setbacks which may cause maximum loss.

D) The electrical room

The tour guide showed us the electrical room but weren’t allowed to enter.
The electrical room is a room which contains the power supply channel of the entire
company and it is one of the crucial areas since when power goes down it may affect
the entire company operation and cause major loss. That’s why TTCL uses;
i) Commercial power from TANESCO
ii) Solar energy and back up batteries
E) The national ICT Broadband Backbone(NICTBB)
The National ICT Broadband Backbone is managed and operated by Tanzania
Telecommunication Company Ltd. (TTCL) on behalf of the government of United Republic of
Tanzania, through the ministry of Communication Science and Technology (MCST).

NICTBB help to fulfil the increasing demands of information services, strenghthen competitive
abilities of domestic data and voice operators as well as bridging the digital divide. It is
necessary in developing high speed broadband and helps to efficiently exploit the benefits from
undersea submarine cables landing in Dar es Salaam by providing high quality capacity fiber
optic connectivity from Tanzania to within Africa and the rest of the world. NICTBB is redefining
everything that we know in e-governiment, e-learning, e-health and e-commerce.
CONCLUSION
Our trip ended about 14:00 hrs. t can be concluded that the trip was successful
and we believed that our objective was achieved. We learned something new and
beneficial for us. It was a well recommended trip especially for us ELECTRONICS
AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS students in order to the reality of our course
occupation.
