LINEAR RELATIONSHIPS
OVE RV I E W

STANDARDS
8.EE.5 Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope of the graph. Compare two
different proportional relationships represented in different ways.

8.EE.6 Use similar triangles to explain why the slope m is the same between any two distinct points on a
non-vertical line in the coordinate plane; derive the equation y = mx for a line through the origin and the
equation y = mx + b for a line intercepting the vertical axis at b.

8.F.4 Construct a function to model a linear relationship between two quantities. Determine the rate of
change and initial value of the function from a description of a relationship or from two (x, y) values,
including reading these from a table or from a graph. Interpret the rate of change and initial value of a linear
function in terms of the situation it models, and in terms of its graph or a table of values.

BIG IDEAS
• Slope of linear relationships can be found from graphs, tables and ordered pairs, and the slope of a
linear graph is the same between any two points on the line.

• The rate of change and initial value of linear relationships can be found and expressed in multiple
representations (graphs, tables, descriptions).

• Linear relationships can be classified as either proportional or non-proportional based on certain

characteristics.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS
• How can the slope of a line be found, and what does it tell you about the line?
• What makes a situation proportional or non-proportional?
• How can rate of change be found from tables? Ordered pairs? Graphs?

KEY VOCABULARY
linear relationship: a relationship that can be represented with a straight line that has a constant rate
of change or slope
slope: rate of change; the ratio of the change in y-values over the change in x-values, or
“rise” over “run”; the steepness of a line
slope-intercept form: the equation of a straight line in the form of y=mx + b where m is the slope and b
is the y-intercept
unit rate: a comparison of two measurements with a denominator of 1

y-intercept: the point where a line crosses the y-axis; the y-value when x is zero

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS
• Students may misplace values in the slope formula. For example, students may subtract the x-values in
the numerator and the y-values in the denominator.

• Students may forget to check the intervals on a graph when finding slope.

• Students may try to divide a y-value by the corresponding x-value to find rate of change in a non-
proportional situation rather than use the slope formula.

• Students may write an incorrect equation for relationships represented in various forms.

PROPORTIONAL AND NON-PROPORTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Linear relationships can be proportional or non-proportional. A proportional relationship means
that there is a constant _________ between the values of x and y. Complete the table below to
review the differences in proportional and non-proportional representations.
