1.1 Overview
The E1 digital interface is notably used to connect an OmniPCX Enterprise to the public
network for incoming/outgoing calls in CAS (Channel Associated Signaling) mode.

On the OmniPCX Enterprise, the E1 interface is supported by the following boards, depending
on site hardware configuration:
- On an OmniPCX Media Gateway, by the PCM R2 board, offering CAS (Channel
Associated Signaling) mode.
- On an ACT Media Gateway, by the PCM2 board, offering CAS (Channel Associated
Signaling) mode.
The PCM R2 and PCM2 boards each provide a digital access with 32 64-Kbit/s Time Slots
(TSs) to transport voice calls and signaling. Total throughput is 2048 Kbits/s.
Note: To simplify, the PCM R2 and PCM2 boards are referred to as the "E1 board" in this document.

The E1 CAS link is supported by an “E1 CAS” trunk group. Trunk group type differs depending
on the signaling protocol used for the link:

2.1 Operation
In the context of an E1 CAS link, a frame is composed of a set of 32 Time Slots (TSs) each of
8 bits for a duration of 125 µs. Line rate is thus 32 64-Kbit/s channels, that is, 2048 Kbit/s.

The 32 TSs in the frame can be broken down as follows:

- TS 0 is used for frame synchronization.
- TS 16 is used for signaling transport.
- TSs 1 to 15 and 17 to 31 are used for voice call transport. They represent the 30 B
channels of the E1 access. The correspondence between TS No. and B channel No. is:

Transmission format on an E1 CAS link is: a multi-frame composed of 16 frames. Format is

selected taking the following facts into consideration:
1. Signaling information for each B channel is sent in a group of 4 bits called a, b, c, and d.
2. In a frame, TS 16 only has 8 bits to support the signaling of the 30 B channels.
A multi-frame structure composed of 16 frames is configured to transport the signaling bits (a,
b, c, and d) for the 30 B channels. In this structure:
- Frame 0 ensures the alignment of the multi-frame via TS 16, of which the first four bits are
set to 0 (see figure below). This frame also transports an alarm indicator that indicates
whether or not there is a loss of frame synchronization (bit Y in the figure below).
- Frames 1 to 15 transport the signaling of the 30 B channels, again via TS 16.
• TS 16 of frame 1 transports bits a, b, c, and d for B channels 1 and 16 (Ch1 and Ch16
in the figure below).
• TS 16 of frame 2 transports bits a, b, c, and d for B channels 2 and 17.
• And so on, up to frame 15, of which TS 16 transports bits a, b, c, and d for B channels

15 and 30.
Note: TS0 has two special configurations depending on whether the frame is odd or even, where:
- TS0 of even frames (0, 2, 4, etc.) is used for multi-frame synchronization.
- TS0 of odd frames (1, 3, 5, etc.) is used for the alarm if frame alignment is lost (bit X in the figure
below). Bit X is set to “0” if there is no alarm.
Multi-frame structure:

2.2 E1 CAS link signaling characteristics

E1 CAS link signaling is line signaling. It corresponds to channel by channel signaling where,
in the multi-frame, TS16 of each frame transports the signaling of two channels (or B
channels). Channel signaling thus use 4 bits (a, b, c, and d) with bits c and d respectively set
at 0 and 1. It transports supervision signals: line seize, seize acknowledgment, called party
answer, release, etc.
E1 CAS link signaling may also include register signaling that transports command signals for
call setup: the dialing, priority, etc. This signaling is only exchanged during call setup.
The following types of signaling are supported for an E1 CAS access:
Note: Depending on whether signals are sent in the direction of call setup (from the caller to the called
party) or in the opposite direction (from the called party to the caller), we may make a distinction
between:
- Forward signals (f),
- Backward signals (b).

3.1 Requirements
Depending on OmniPCX Enterprise hardware configuration, implementing a E1 CAS link
requires the following to be installed:
- A PCM2 board on the ACT Media Gateway.
- A PCM R2 board on the OmniPCX Media Gateway.

3.2 Installing the PCM2 board

Depending on system requirements, first check the position of the straps on the PCM2 board.
For information on how do this, refer to module PCM2 - Hardware configuration .
Once this has been done, install the PCM2 board in the ACT Media Gateway and connect it to
the public network. For information on how do this, refer to module PCM2 - External
connections .
When the connection has been made, check that the PCM2 board initializes correctly using
the LEDS on the front panel. LED meaning is given in module PCM2 - Hardware configuration
.

3.3 Installing the PCM R2 board

The PCM R2 board requires no special configuration. It can be directly installed and connected
in the OmniPCX Media Gateway. Make sure that free slots, authorized for the board, are used.
Once this step has been completed, check that the PCM R2 board initializes correctly using
the LEDS on the front panel.
All the information required to install the PCM R2 is given in module PCM R2 - External
connections .

4.1 Overview
This module describes the different configuration operations to be performed on the OmniPCX
Enterprise to set up E1 CAS links to the public network.

To simplify the explanation, only the configuration operations required to set up a single E1
CAS link between an OmniPCX Enterprise and the public network are described.
Note: In the rest of the document, only the settings (parameters) relevant to these configuration
operations (management) will be described.
An E1 access in CAS mode is configured (managed) as follows:

4.5 Creating trunks

Full E1 trunk group management involves declaring E1 trunk group trunks (or B channels) and
assigning a trunk COS (managed in the previous paragraph) to each trunk.
The following operation must be repeated for all trunks in the E1 trunk group.
Object name: Trunk Groups > Trunk Group > Trunks
Attributes:
Trunk Group Id : Enter the number of the E1 trunk group configured
previously.
Physical Address : Enter trunk address as follows: a-b-c-d
Where:
- "a" is OmniPCX Media Gateway address.
- "b" is E1 board address.
- "c" is 0.
- "d" is termination address.

5.1 Introduction
For CAS on E1 board maintenance, the following commands (to be run on the system
terminal) have been developed or adapted:
Name Function Operation
cplalrm Allows the alarm counters of the board See module cplalrm - Operation
concerned to be displayed.
trkstat Allows data on the trunks of the E1 trunk See § The "trkstat" command
group concerned to be displayed.
trkvisu Used to determine the ID number of a link See § The "trkvisu" command
for the E1.
config Used to display hardware configuration See § The "config" command
and the status of boards installed in the
system.
infocs Used to determine which board is See § The "infocs" command
potentially synchronizing.
incvisu Used to display incidents on the local See module incvisu - Operation
node.
mtracer, trc These commands are used to obtain See module ISDN T0/T2 (CCS on
and tuner traces on the E1 CAS process. E1 boards) - Maintenance
sigtrace Used to display signaling automaton See § The "sigtrace" command
status changes in CAS mode.

5.2 The "trkstat" command

This command is used to display the busy status of trunks in the selected E1 trunk group and
the alarm status of the E1 board supporting the trunk group.
Syntax:

The -r option is used to refresh data.
Trunk status may be:
- na (not assigned).
- F (free).
- hs (out of service).
- B (busy).
