1. Suppose f : Rn → Rn be a map such that f (x+y) = f (x)+f (y) and f (αx) = αf (x)
for all x, y ∈ Rn , for all α ∈ R. Is f differentiable at every point of Rn ? Justify your
answer.

2. Let f : R3 → R is a C ∞ -smooth function. Assume F := {(x, y, z) ∈ R3 :
∂f
f (x, y, z) = 0} is a nonempty set and 6= 0 on F . Answer the following (True/False)
∂x
questions with proper justification:
i) F is always compact.
ii) F can never be a collection of finitely many points of R3 .
iii) {(x, y, z) ∈ R3 : f (x, y, z) < 0} is always bounded.
iv) If g : R3 \ F → R be another differentiable function such that Dg(x, y, z) = 0
for all (x, y, z) ∈ R3 \ F , then g is a constant
v) For every point (x0 , y0 , z0 ) ∈ F there exists a neighbourhood U of (x0 , y0 )
and a differentiable function g : U → R such that f (x, y, g(x, y)) = 0 for all
(x, y) ∈ U .
vi) For every point (x0 , y0 , z0 ) ∈ F there exists a neighbourhood U of (y0 , z0 )
and a differentiable function g : U → R such that f (g(y, z), y, z) = 0 for all
(y, z) ∈ U .

3. Let f : R3 → R3 be a map defined by

f (x, y) = (x + y + z, xy + yz + zx, xyz),

i) Find the points where f is not locally invertible. Justify your answer

ii) Is f one one on R3 ? Give justifications.
