Cesar Millan was born in Mexico and grew up on a farm. At an early age, he worked
well with the wild dogs there, so locals called him el perrero, or ‘dog boy’. He always
knew he wanted to be a dog trainer. In December 1990, at the age of 21, Cesar
r
pe
travelled to California, USA to live his dream. With no friends or money for a hotel,
he slept on the streets of San Diego, but in March 1991 he found work looking after
Pa
dogs.
e
When he had saved enough money, Cesar moved to Los Angeles and started a dog
pl
advice service. Dog owners told Cesar about the difficulties they had with their dogs.
m
Cesar became very popular with his customers and in 2002 a newspaper article was
written about him. Then, he received an offer to do a TV show. The series, called The
Sa
Dog Whisperer, was first shown in 2004. In the show, Cesar helped owners with their
dogs. It was shown in over 80 countries, with 11 million US viewers each week. After
ns
eight years, the series finished in 2012.
io
Cesar’s main message is that dogs need three things: exercise, rules and love. He
at
trains owners to understand that what a dog needs most of all is exercise. After that,
in
it is easier to control a dog. ‘There is no need to shout, but you should only show love
when your dog follows the rules. Many dog owners give too much love and not enough
