Problem Definition

Problem- The late arrival to school by the Jamaica College and Mona High School caused by

the high traffic congestion on Old Hope Road during the early morning

Problem Description

When a new school year starts, there is usually a large number of parent and or guardians

that are trying to get their children and or wards to school on time by taking them to the nearest

bus stop in order to go to Half Way Tree, or Heading straight to his/her school, but there is

always a large crowd of people, ranging about over 400 persons, and the buses always arrive one

hour after another. Furthermore, most of the time during the morning, there is always a lot of

traffic coming from Half Way Tree road to Old Hope Road, which prevent students from

reaching to school on time. No matter how many times they try to reach to the bus stop early,

they always get caught up in traffic. Even when students wanted to take taxis, which takes faster

routes than buses, the drivers don`t want to take them.

Analysis of Problem

In order to the researcher to analyze the problem, the use of several fact finding techniques

would be used in an attempt to collect and compile data on the problem faced. These techniques

are the techniques used entails:

 Questionnaires- Based on the information that is presented, it shows that most of the

participants are male students from Jamaica College that usually take the 73AX/75/900

bus. They sometimes take these buses because it mostly takes 30-45 minutes, sometimes

over an hour to reach to their destination, which makes them frustrated. Therefore, they

would really want to try out the new transport system.

 Interview Questions- Based on the information that was presented, the interviewees had

said that the traffic in Old Hope Road were extremely terrible during the mornings. On

what the parents have said, most of the students managed to reach to school on time, but

the rest have reached school until about the first session has finished. They said that the

current transport system can be a disadvantage because they said the buses take a really

long time to arrive and they are always full, which make the students late. They said that

getting up at an earlier time could result in the reduction of traffic, but even when they do

that, they`re always stuck in traffic. So, the best method that they could think of are to

apply a school bus transport system for the students so they can arrive much earlier.

 Observations-based on what I have observed for over a week, I have realized that the

crowd were not moving that fast because the buses takes over an hour for each bus to

arrive. That is the reason students always arrive late to school.

Identification of Possible Solutions

After using various fact finding techniques in the effort to evaluate and correct the issues, certain

tools must be implemented. These include:

 Setting up kiosk machines can effectively contribute to a decrease in traffic. A kiosk

machine is a computer terminal that integrates technology hardware and software, it has

man-machine interactive interface that people can operate all functions by finger

according to the device prompts. It can be applicable to different industries such as

telecommunications, transportation, health care industry and commerce. Kiosk is self-

service machine one example of such is a bank ATMs.These machines provides

information, service & order commands that requires no time and any help from a

human being In New York there are some kiosk machines at each bus stop where

payments and potential routes can be established. This can reduce the waiting time for

person and allow the public to have an idea of the time of arrival of busses or trains

without having for find workers to provide you with that information.

 Developing a website so they can see which will be leaving and the route it will take. .

For example, if a student or employee completes a form, it will be saved on the drive so it

can`t be manipulated by outside users.

4

Evaluation of Possible Solutions

 Kiosk Machines

Software tool-Kiosk software is a customer service tool that runs on a standalone console

or system, allowing users to access a handful of functions and applications. The software

tool would be dependent on the software developer.

Personnel-In order for a software to be established, Software developers will have to be

hired in order to build the user friendly software for individuals to easily interact with.

Cost-The cost for the developing the kiosk machine will include building the Interactive

Kiosks hardware which would cost between $529 to $4,700 depending on display size.

Another cost would be paying a software developer to create the software which On

average, custom software development starts from $10,000 to as high as $100,000 usd.

 Websites

Software Tool- A website software tool called “Wix” will be used to create the website

that is to be implemented. This software tool allows for the integration of web forms that
will be used to collect data from students and employees. The Wix website builder also

enables cloud storage and therefore the information entered by students and employees

can be stored online for access anytime and anywhere.

Personnel- a website developer will be required to build and maintain the website.

Additional personnel will also be needed to train the staff in using the new technology

tool.

Cost- Using the Wix website builder and hosting the web will be free, however the

advanced features and customizing domain will cost an average of 22USD per month,

and hiring a web designer will also cost an average of 300USD.

Solution

In the problem identified above, the most possible solution to solving this problem would be to

construct a website for students and employees to sign in to, so they could have a private

transport system ready for them. This system can prove to help passengers to reach their

destinations on time without running into traffic.

Providing a faster route is a good means of ensuring that students and employees can get to their

destinations on time. The transport system website serves as the solution to the problem faced, as

it is best suited and would most likely help them to reach at the front gate in time, rather than

waiting on a bus, which takes a long time to arrive, as well as to wait to reach to their destination

in the traffic.
7

Justification of Possible Solution

In justifying the solution, a number of factors must be considered. These include signing in a

participant to a wrong bus; persons can hack into the website as well as the cost to implement the

website.

The first issue would be the poor and confusing journey, as one of the customers would take a

long time to get to where he or she wants to go to buy a ticket. Also, the worst thing that could

happen is when the user either accidentally closes the website or his or her internet went, then the

user has to start over back the long process of buying a ticket. Therefore, to prevent this, the web

developer can reduce the number of options so the user can be able to get to where he or she

wants to go faster.

The second issue is when the website has no protection; it can be vulnerable to hackers, as they

can mess up the business website by stealing information of customers, and to add in illegal

information to make the website slow. Also, when they come to buy the tickets, they cannot get

it because the website doesn`t load the information properly, or even worse, they could crash the

entire website. Therefore, in order to prevent this, some security measures have to be applied, for

example, using HTTPS to provide security over the internet, as persons would want their
information to be private and to keep the website updated to the latest version if any of the new

vulnerabilities come out.

Cities can't eliminate traffic congestion over night, but modern technology can help them manage

it better. By viewing urban planning through the lens of location, cities can make roads and

highways safer and less congested and help drivers navigate more efficiently around accidents

and construction work. Cities have the opportunity now to harness the power of aggregated and
anonymized road environment data to better understand and design transportation infrastructure

to meet the needs of their residents.
