USES

1. Temperature puts a limit on All Machines

In any machine, electrical or otherwise, maximum permissible temperature is one of the

parameters that puts a limit on the power delivered by the machine or equipment or appliance.
Therefore, whether we talk of ICs or large generators or transmission lines or engines of various
types; they all have temperature limits. This is because every material used in the manufacture of
a machine has a temperature limit beyond which it will lose its normal characteristics.

2. For Electrical Machines, Temperature limit of Insulation is most Important

In the context of electrical machines, the insulating material has the lowest temperature limit.
Therefore, it is the type of insulating material used in the electrical machine that determines the
temperature limit (or temperature class) of the machine. This means that if we draw more power
from the electrical machine beyond its rating, insulation is likely to fail first which, in turn, will
cause failure of the entire machine. Note that the temperature limit for copper or iron is much
higher, but this will hardly be of any help because the weak link (i.e. insulation) will fail first.

3. Temperature Influences Electrical Resistance.

If the temperature increases, resistance increases (negative temperature coefficient). And
so, the current flow and the voltage in the circuit will be varied. That is why temperature is
maintained everywhere. To maintain this, we use heat sinks, fans, and heat pipes. We have a
temperature sensor in every board to keep an eye on the temperature of the circuit board.

4. Body Temperature in Medicine

Measuring body temperature is very important in medicine. A number of diseases are
characterized by a change in body temperature. With other illnesses, the course of the disease
can be followed by measuring body temperature. This allows the doctor to analyze the
effectiveness of treatments based on body temperatures.

5. Temperature of Food
It is essential to use a food thermometer when cooking meat, poultry, and egg products to
prevent undercooking, and consequently, prevent foodborne illness. Use an appliance
thermometer to be sure the refrigerator temperature is consistently 40 °F or below and the
freezer temperature is 0 °F or below.
