CAT CUTOFF OF TOP B-SCHOOLS IN INDIA

INTRODUCTION
Out of the two lakh candidates that appear for CAT each year, only one per-
cent test-takers secure 100 percentile. Once the CAT result is declared, MBA
aspirants look for the right B-schools to apply for based on their percentile.
Although, the top B-schools look for candidates with allround excellence in
terms of past academic records, work experience and extracurricular activi-
ties, the primary eligibility criterion is to fulfil the CAT cutoff.

Those who secure a high percentile are mostly confident about getting calls
from their dream colleges. But candidates with an average percentile are
often confused whether there is any decent B-School they can apply to with
their percentile. The most common type of questions asked by the students
after the exams are like “I could manage to secure 50 or 60 or 70 percentile
in CAT or XAT. Do I have any chance of getting into any top B-school?”

Careers360 presents the answers to the most common questions in this

E-book. We, at Careers360 have identified percentile brackets and accord-
ingly the B-schools where MBA aspirants stand a chance of admission.
Based on the percentile bracket, candidates can narrow down their option
and target the right set of B-schools for MBA admission.

WHERE TO APPLY WITH 60

PERCENTILE OR LESS IN CAT?
A low score or a dis-satisfactory result does not always mean that the doors
to CAT takers’ dream destination has closed. If the CAT percentile is in the
range of 50 to 70 percentile, candidates may be wondering if there is any
chance to get admission to a decent B-School. Although admission in a top
B-School is not possible with this percentile, but that does not mean the
end of their MBA dream.

Selecting the right B-School with CAT percentile of 60 can be a tricky affair.
Although there is no dearth of B-schools whose CAT cutoffs range above
50 percentile, selecting the right one is the main area of concern. To guide
aspirants with MBA admission, we bring the list of B-schools with cutoffs
ranging from 60 to 70 percentile or below.

We have classified the B-schools into three categories: B-schools with CAT
cutoff 60 percentile, 65 percentile and less than 60 percentile.

WHAT IF THE CAT PERCENTILE IS

BETWEEN 80 AND 90? IS THERE
ANY CHANCE AT GET THROUGH TOP
B-SCHOOLS?
While CAT takers get optimistic to see themselves placed in the top range of
CAT takers, the reality check of not being able to make it to the old IIMs also strikes
soon. Since the old IIMs exhaust the shortlist by 98-100 percentile, there is hardly
any chance for CAT takers securing 80 to 90 percentile to get a call from old IIMs.
Despite performing well in CAT, candidates suddenly realise that they are not
good enough for their dream destinations to spend next two years. But rather
than losing hope, they should look at the brighter side that there are several top B-
schools in the range of 80 to 90 percentile, including the new IIMs.

Here we have classi ied the CAT percentile range in two stages, 80 to 85 percentile
and 86 to 90 percentile. The following tables bring the B-schools in the ranges
mentioned above along with their expected CAT cutoff percentiles. The institutes
mentioned in the lists below are within top 25-30 according to the Careers360 B-
School Ranking.

TOP B-SCHOOLS WHICH ACCEPT

CAT PERCENTILE BETWEEN 90 AND
100
The feeling of being in the league of toppers in a competitive exam like CAT, taken by
around two lakh candidates, is indeed unparalleled. Having secured a place among
the top 10 percent test takers with 90 percentile or above deserve to be in the dream
B-School namely IIMs, FMS and the likes. Although CAT toppers will receive a plethora
of calls from B-schools across tiers owing to their high percentile, they should not
select anything but the best for them. While applying to a B-School whose cutoff is 99
percentile would not get a CAT taker with 92 percentile a call, similarly, there is no point
in applying to an institute whose CAT cutoff is 90 percentile if his/her percentile is 99.

Case 1 – 98+ Percentile

With this top percentile, CAT toppers undoubtedly have IIM calls awaiting. Here they
stand to claim a seat in their dream B-schools like IIM BLACKIS or IIM Bangalore, Luc-
know, Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Kozhikode, Indore and Shillong. Apart from IIMs, other
institutes which they can expect calls from include FMS Delhi, DMS, IIT Delhi among
others. Let us take a look at the MBA colleges to expect interview calls from.

Case 1 – 98+ Percentile

B-School Cutoff Percentile (Approx)
IIM Ahmedabad 99+
IIM Bangalore 99+
IIM Calcutta 99+
IIM Lucknow 99+
IIM Indore 99+
DMS, IIT Delhi 99+
SJMSOM, IIT Bombay 99+
FMS, University of Delhi 99+

There is a caveat to the above mentioned B-schools. IIMs and top B-schools like DMS,
IIT Delhi also consider other components of candidate profile. Factors such as past
academic background and work experience form important components at the short-
list and final selection criteria.
For instance, IIM Bangalore gives 50 percent weightage to the academic records
including Class X, XII and Graduation marks and eight per-cent to work experience for
shortlisting. For the final selection, the institute will give only 25 per-cent weightage
to CAT performance and rest of the 75 percent weightage will be assigned to WAT-PI
performance (40 percent), past academic records (25 percent) and work experience
(10 percent). Hence, even if they secure 99 percentile or above, there is no surety of

Case 2 – 95-98 Percentile

1st line- If the toppers’ CAT percentile is between 95 and 98, they have a host of
Tier I B-schools where they can apply for MBA/ PGDM admission.
The table below consists of the new IIMs, IITs, MDI Gurgaon and the likes.

The institutes mentioned above also give due weightage to the Profile factor. Along
with the can-didate profile and fulfilling the cutoff, candidates have to also perform
well in the Group Discussion (GD) or Writing Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview
(PI) rounds to convert the call.

top institutes. At one hand, they can expect calls from the new IIMs and on the other
hand, there are noted institutes like XIMB, Great Lakes Institute of Management and
Goa Institute of Management to name a few. Let us take a look at the list below.

WHAT NEXT?
Apply to B-schools: IIMs shortlist candidates for the WAT-PI rounds after the
declara-tion of result. If candidates have not applied in any of the above mentioned
institutes apart from IIMs, check whether the application process is still open. Several
B-schools which had closed their CAT application window reopen the process after
the declaration of result. They have to visit the official websites to find out whether
they can still apply for the upcoming academic year.

Know the Admission Criteria: As stated above, high CAT percentile is not the
only cri-terion to get a call or convert from IIMs. Each of the 20 IIMs has
separate admission criteria comprising of the different components and their
weightages also vary from IIM to IIM. Aspirants have to go through the detailed
IIM Admission Criteria to know the processes and estimate chances at each IIM.

Start preparing for GD, PI and WAT – Clearing CAT cutoff is just half the
battle won. Test takers have to do the rest by performing their best in the final
rounds of selection.

Target top B-schools through state level exams - IIf the candidates are looking for
admission in other institutes like JBIMS Mumbai or SIMSREE Mumbai they can also
use their MAH CET score. The MAH CET cutoffs for these B-schools range from
95-99 percentile. If they prepare and appear for the test with similar dedication and
approach, chances are high that they can crack the admis-sion at these B-schools as
well.

Specialised MBA programmes: If the aspirants have appeared for the specialised
MBA entrance exams like MICAT or aim to take admission in IRMA, and have
confidence in cracking the test, they can also consider getting into the specialised
MBA programmes like PGDM – Communication (MICA) or Post Graduate Programme
in Rural Management (IRMA). Inciden-tally, the primary eligibility criterion for both
MICA and IRMA is to appear for CAT.

Decide wisely – Even if the percentile meets the cutoff to a B-School, before
applying, or con-firming admission (considering they receive final admission offer),
know if the institute is worth. The factors that need to be assessed are brand
name or repute, ROI factor (fee vs average salary offered at placement),
location, industry exposure, faculty strength, resources, infrastructure among
others. They may seek review from current students, con-tact the college officials
and if possible, visit the B-School to get a true picture.

Consider retest – If the reason for the low score is lack of preparation,
such candidates may consider appearing for CAT again next year.Taking the lesson
from previ-ous performance, they can start afresh to secure a much higher percentile
and tar-get admission to dream B-schools.
