CAT CUTOFF OF TOP B-SCHOOLS IN INDIA
INTRODUCTION
Out of the two lakh candidates that appear for CAT each year, only one per-
cent test-takers secure 100 percentile. Once the CAT result is declared, MBA
aspirants look for the right B-schools to apply for based on their percentile.
Although, the top B-schools look for candidates with allround excellence in
terms of past academic records, work experience and extracurricular activi-
ties, the primary eligibility criterion is to fulfil the CAT cutoff.
Those who secure a high percentile are mostly confident about getting calls
from their dream colleges. But candidates with an average percentile are
often confused whether there is any decent B-School they can apply to with
their percentile. The most common type of questions asked by the students
after the exams are like “I could manage to secure 50 or 60 or 70 percentile
in CAT or XAT. Do I have any chance of getting into any top B-school?”

There is a caveat to the above mentioned B-schools. IIMs and top B-schools like DMS,
IIT Delhi also consider other components of candidate profile. Factors such as past
academic background and work experience form important components at the short-
list and final selection criteria.
For instance, IIM Bangalore gives 50 percent weightage to the academic records
including Class X, XII and Graduation marks and eight per-cent to work experience for
shortlisting. For the final selection, the institute will give only 25 per-cent weightage
to CAT performance and rest of the 75 percent weightage will be assigned to WAT-PI
performance (40 percent), past academic records (25 percent) and work experience
(10 percent). Hence, even if they secure 99 percentile or above, there is no surety of

The institutes mentioned above also give due weightage to the Profile factor. Along
with the can-didate profile and fulfilling the cutoff, candidates have to also perform
well in the Group Discussion (GD) or Writing Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview
(PI) rounds to convert the call.

WHAT NEXT?
Apply to B-schools: IIMs shortlist candidates for the WAT-PI rounds after the
declara-tion of result. If candidates have not applied in any of the above mentioned
institutes apart from IIMs, check whether the application process is still open. Several
B-schools which had closed their CAT application window reopen the process after
the declaration of result. They have to visit the official websites to find out whether
they can still apply for the upcoming academic year.
Know the Admission Criteria: As stated above, high CAT percentile is not the
only cri-terion to get a call or convert from IIMs. Each of the 20 IIMs has
separate admission criteria comprising of the different components and their
weightages also vary from IIM to IIM. Aspirants have to go through the detailed
IIM Admission Criteria to know the processes and estimate chances at each IIM.
Start preparing for GD, PI and WAT – Clearing CAT cutoff is just half the
battle won. Test takers have to do the rest by performing their best in the final
rounds of selection.
Target top B-schools through state level exams - IIf the candidates are looking for
admission in other institutes like JBIMS Mumbai or SIMSREE Mumbai they can also
use their MAH CET score. The MAH CET cutoffs for these B-schools range from
95-99 percentile. If they prepare and appear for the test with similar dedication and
approach, chances are high that they can crack the admis-sion at these B-schools as
well.
Specialised MBA programmes: If the aspirants have appeared for the specialised
MBA entrance exams like MICAT or aim to take admission in IRMA, and have
confidence in cracking the test, they can also consider getting into the specialised
MBA programmes like PGDM – Communication (MICA) or Post Graduate Programme
in Rural Management (IRMA). Inciden-tally, the primary eligibility criterion for both
MICA and IRMA is to appear for CAT.
Decide wisely – Even if the percentile meets the cutoff to a B-School, before
applying, or con-firming admission (considering they receive final admission offer),
know if the institute is worth. The factors that need to be assessed are brand
name or repute, ROI factor (fee vs average salary offered at placement),
location, industry exposure, faculty strength, resources, infrastructure among
others. They may seek review from current students, con-tact the college officials
and if possible, visit the B-School to get a true picture.
Consider retest – If the reason for the low score is lack of preparation,
such candidates may consider appearing for CAT again next year.Taking the lesson
from previ-ous performance, they can start afresh to secure a much higher percentile
and tar-get admission to dream B-schools.
