Literacy is most generally known as the ability to read and write. However,
it is not as easy as it seems. Reading and writing abilities vary across various
cultures and backgrounds, and these too are continually changing. UNESCO
defines literacy as "the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and
compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts. Literacy
involves a continuum of learning in enabling individuals to achieve their goals, to develop
their knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in their community and wider
society."

There are many types of literacy, but one thing that everyone knows is
traditional literacy. The conventional concept of literacy is the ability to read and
write. As a student, literacy is critical, and I considered myself to be literate in a
way I can read and write.
The level of understanding comprehension is a device that helps in literature
research. One way to do this literature review is using a method called the Levels
of Comprehension. There are six levels: literal, inferential, appreciative, criticism,
evaluative, and critical.
The level of my comprehension is level 5– Evaluative. In books, I can
evaluate the way the author wrote the book and made
comparison with other types of a literary pieces.
As a pre-service teacher, I need to focus on how to manage students. That is
why I need to read management and teaching strategies books. Yes, I have read
these kinds of books, mainly John Maxwell's books primarily focus on leadership.
"New literacies" that emerge from new technology include topics like text
messaging, tweeting, social networking, podcasting, and videomaking. This
emerging technology modifies and expands our communication skills, frequently
combining text, sound, and imagery. While related to more senior, "offline"
traditions, these innovations shift what it means to both "read" and "write" texts.
As a student of the 21st century, I am more knowledgeable about Media
Literacy, Computer Literacy, and 21st Century Literacy (including the 4 c's: Critical
thinking, Creative thinking, Communicating, and Collaborating). On the other
hand, I lack knowledge when it comes to numeracy.
The Philippines aims to develop Functional/Practical literacy in learners.
However, traditional teachers focus more on memorization rather than
understanding. This is a clear example of Traditional teaching. Conventional
teaching methods is the application that focuses more on memorization rather than
to learn in a way that it will instill in the mind of the students subconsciously. The
level of literacy that is being developed that focuses more on memorization is Level
1.
