Engineering Materials, Processes and Testing
OBJECTIVE
1. Identification of the different parts and operations of the Universal Testing Machine and its
relevance.
INTRODUCTION
The universal testing machine (UTM) is a machine that evaluates the mechanical parameters
(tension, compression, etc.) of a test specimen using tensile, compressive, or transverse stresses.
The name of the machine originated from the wide range of tests it can perform on different
materials. Peel tests, flexural tests, tension tests, bend tests, friction testing, spring tests, and
other tests can all be performed with UTM.
Universal testing equipment gives improved control and stability during the materials testing
procedure. Precision and uniformity are also ensured by using a universal testing machine.
Material mechanics, or material strength, is an area of materials science that calculates material
stresses and strains. Among the many tensile strength and compressive strength materials tests
accessible are tear, elongation, fatigue, plasticity, 3-point bend, deflection, deformation,
elasticity, fracture, and failure tests. The diversity of tests offered allows for examining a wide
range of materials in some conditions (for example, varied speeds, loading rates, and forces).
A universal testing machine is used to measure the strength of materials. Universal testing
equipment gives improved control and stability during the materials testing procedure. Precision
and consistency are also ensured by using a universal testing machine. Materials testing with
universal testing equipment should follow DIN, ISO, and ASTM standards. Furthermore, proper
safety precautions should be implemented to avoid accidents and injuries. For example, DIN
51233, ISO 527, and ISO 37 are regularly used standards for universal testing of plastic and
rubber products. PCE Instruments is committed to worker safety and protection, and each PCE-
branded adaptable testing equipment is built under the machinery directive 2006/42/EG.
METHODS
1. For the experiment, prepare the specified specimen.
2. For each specimen, use the appropriate Universal Testing Machine.
3. To begin the test, place the specimen in the UTM.
4. Check to see that the clamps on the UTM are properly tightened.
5. Analyze the specimen by performing the test.
6. Remove the specimen from the UTM clamps carefully after the test.
7. After the test is completed, write it down all of the relevant data.
CONCLUSION
Understanding the fundamentals of Universal Testing Machine is essential for me as a
Manufacturing Engineering student since it will allow me to apply what I've learned in the
classroom to the mechanical industry. The Universal Testing Machine is a versatile machine that
can help with further product analysis. Due to its versatility, the Universal Testing Machine can
evaluate tensile strength, load, shearing, and other forces that the machine can measure.
