IIM Ahmedabad: Louis I Kahn’s last masterpiece

Introduction:
The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, better known as IIM Ahmedabad or simply
IIMA, is a management institute located in Ahmedabad, India. The old campus was designed by
Louis Kahn, who was an exponent of exposed-brick architecture, with the help of B.V. Doshi &
Anant Raje. The plan’s most characteristic features are the numerous arches, and square brick
structures with circles carved out in the facade.

About documentation:
some of the qualities any work of Louis I kahn are Plain facade with circular openings, huge
geometries, that look minimal and very aesthetic.

Referring to how Ar. Louis Kahn got involved in this project Ar. B. V. Doshi mentioned, he met
Ar. Louis Kahn when he was teaching in Pennsylvania. for Ar. Louis kahn; Ar. Le Corbusier was
his ideal he respected him a lot.
When they decided to do IIM, Ar. B. V. Doshi suggested Ar. Louis kahn’s name.
For kahn the design of institute was more than just efficient spatial planning of the classrooms,
he began to question the design of the educational infrastructure but the classrooms was just the
first phase of learning for students B.V. Doshi who believed that Louie Kahn would be able to
envision a new modern school for India's youth.
He mentioned, for them lose visit was always a very exciting moment, learning something more
and appreciation there are very few people who will talk about matter in spiritual terms Talking
about khan B.V. Doshi mentioned nothingness mattered to him, silence mattered to him, the
mystery of light mattered to him and they liked these ideas
Kahn’s perspective about this project was not to just focus on the classrooms as the center of
academic thought, the classrooms was just the formal setting from the beginning of learning the
hallways and the Kahn's Plaza became the new centers of learning.
Talking about Kahn, B.V. Doshi said he was reaching his higher levels of spiritual recognition,

in India we always say that nobody dies they go to the next world it's a transition the body dies,
the soul doesn't die the consciousness doesn't die and Khan has reached that stage of super
consciousness where for him everything was alive when everything was in the stage of
transformation and as we waiting for him to come back he has not come back as yet but he's
there watching, blessing and wishing if you go into silence you will hear him.
Kahn and his team created a one of the most exclusive business schools in the world, Kahn was
never able to see his project come to life as he died in New York City in 1974 before this project
were finished however his designs had completely transformed the way in which modern
architecture establishes itself in one's culture.
