CONTENTS
1.1. Introduction
Thank you for purchasing Acustica Audio Magenta Eq plug-in. Magenta Eq is one of a
growing number of the Acqua Effect plug-ins product line. Acustica Audio has been working in
high-quality analog hardware devices software modeling for over seven years. The audio
rendering engine, Acqua, embodies the state of the art of sample-based products and has set
a new quality standard in the professional audio plug-in market.
Magenta Eq is the best mastering equalizer that we have ever designed. It is inspired by a
famous parallel passive equalizer used on a daily basis in countless audio applications. We
were so smitten with this hardware that we were inspired to recreate it in a software that would
do it justice, while still improving it as much as we could. The beauty of the sound processed in
the analog domain combined with the digital precision results in an amazing product that tops
anything we have done so far.
During the modeling process we used the best converters and cables on the market, we
measured the mastering unit in excellent conditions, and employed skilled experts in the
sampling process using our self-developed sampling application. The result is a two-channel,
four-band parametric equalizer with a stepped frequency selector, a preamp section, high pass
and low pass filter and an accurate input and output peak meter whose sound is complete and
flawless.
Now you have one of the best high-quality professional audio software in your audio
workstation. We spend countless hours developing these no-compromise plug-ins to give you
only the best sound and the feel that is as close to the real hardware as could be imagined.
We are confident that this plug-in will help you make more professional mixes… Because:
Sound First!

The sound of analog devices is exponentially complex. The initial signal is changed in many,
often very subtle ways, distortion characteristics, frequency response deviations, and
nonlinear saturation, just to name a few. Vectorial Volterra Kernel technology from Acustica
Audio captures these nonlinear characteristics inherent in the original hardware through a
different signal modeling approach.

4. Operation
4.1. Introduction
The Magenta Eq plug-in has only a few controls and is amazingly intuitive to use. The
connections inside Magenta Eq are: gain in, preamp, EQ band 1, EQ band 2, EQ band 3, EQ
band 4, HP filter, LP Filter and gain out. The connections inside Magenta LT are similar but
without the HP and LP filters.
Preamp emulation preset adds 1024 samples of buffer and each filter or EQ band adds 512
samples of buffer.

5. In Use
The main features that make Magenta Eq unique are: passive design with no negative
feedback loops, unique shelves and interaction between controls.
Magenta Eq controls are much more interactive with each other. We encourage you to
experiment with an open mind, without expectations of what control settings should do. It
takes a little getting used to the way the controls interact.
• Boost/cut gain controls are different from the conventional arrangement of a boost,
zero, cut potentiometer (baxandall). The switch also allows twice resolution of the gain
control and a more accurate zero;
• You may also find yourself getting away with what seems like massive amounts of
boost and keep in mind that bell filter only reaches 20 dB of boost at the narrowest
bandwidth, so first try wider bandwidth settings with no more than +6 dB of gain boost
(gain control at twelve o’clock). A reasonable starting point for bandwidth control for
shelf filters is straight up or between 10:00 and 14:00;
• High pass filter is a 18 dB/octave with no resonances. The 22 Hz position is very
subtle and is designed to remove sub-sonic frequencies that may have been boosted
by previous processing devices. 39 Hz position can be used similarly, but may be
audible with some material. 68 Hz position is also general purpose and ideal for most
vocals and pop removal. 120 Hz position is useful for some vocals and 220 Hz position
may be used with close miked hi-hats and percussion instruments;
• Low pass filter 60 to 18 dB/octave with no resonances. The 18 kHz position is a 60
dB/octave filter and is probably more useful for warming up digital sound programs and
removing some irritating super-sonic noise associated with digital to analog converters.
12 kHz position is a 30 dB/octave filter and can be considered general purpose hiss
killing. 9 kHz, 7.5 kHz and 6 kHz positions are intended for more creative sound
sculpting than utility filters, they have a 1.5 to 2 dB bump right before they cut at 18
dB/octave;
• 28 Hz and 38 Hz shelves are altered filters, at maximum value of gain control you will
get around + 16 dB boost or -16 dB cut and bandwidth control for those two lowest
frequencies acts as a high-pass filter to prevent excessive boosting of sub-sonic
frequencies;
31 of 38
• 18 kHz and 27 kHz shelves are also altered filters, bandwidth control for those two
lowest frequencies acts as a low-pass filter to prevent excessive boosting of super-
sonic frequencies. Also the resonance frequency is altered and you will find these
settings as an effective control between the balance of “air” and “sibilance” when you
boost a lot of highs;
• At other extreme high and low frequencies, including 10 kHz and 12 kHz, you might
get some unexpected results because of the interaction between shelf filters and
bandwidth control. For example: you can set up 20 dB of boost at 12 kHz and it can
sound like you just cut highs instead of boosting, in some ways Magenta Eq is
simulating the shape of a resonant synthesizer filter.
