Magenta Eq Plug-in – User Guide

CONTENTS

1. System Requirements and Package Contents

1.1. Introduction
Thank you for purchasing Acustica Audio Magenta Eq plug-in. Magenta Eq is one of a
growing number of the Acqua Effect plug-ins product line. Acustica Audio has been working in
high-quality analog hardware devices software modeling for over seven years. The audio
rendering engine, Acqua, embodies the state of the art of sample-based products and has set
a new quality standard in the professional audio plug-in market.

Magenta Eq is the best mastering equalizer that we have ever designed. It is inspired by a
famous parallel passive equalizer used on a daily basis in countless audio applications. We
were so smitten with this hardware that we were inspired to recreate it in a software that would
do it justice, while still improving it as much as we could. The beauty of the sound processed in
the analog domain combined with the digital precision results in an amazing product that tops
anything we have done so far.

During the modeling process we used the best converters and cables on the market, we
measured the mastering unit in excellent conditions, and employed skilled experts in the
sampling process using our self-developed sampling application. The result is a two-channel,
four-band parametric equalizer with a stepped frequency selector, a preamp section, high pass
and low pass filter and an accurate input and output peak meter whose sound is complete and
flawless.

Now you have one of the best high-quality professional audio software in your audio
workstation. We spend countless hours developing these no-compromise plug-ins to give you
only the best sound and the feel that is as close to the real hardware as could be imagined.
We are confident that this plug-in will help you make more professional mixes… Because:
Sound First!

1.2. Acustica Audio Technology

Despite the digital revolution in the professional audio industry, many of today’s top albums
are still mixed with analog outboard gear. Many people feel that mixing in the analog domain
imparts an elusive quality, a greater sense of weight, space, dynamics with a more “three-
dimensional” image.

Magenta Eq Plug-in – User Guide

The sound of analog devices is exponentially complex. The initial signal is changed in many,
often very subtle ways, distortion characteristics, frequency response deviations, and
nonlinear saturation, just to name a few. Vectorial Volterra Kernel technology from Acustica
Audio captures these nonlinear characteristics inherent in the original hardware through a
different signal modeling approach.

1.3. Sampling Process

The sampling process has been performed by Acustica Audio. The unit was sampled with
mastering quality converters, using a method which takes considerably more time than the
normal sampling standard. This method is of benefit to the entire audio spectrum. Two sample
rates are provided with Magenta Eq; the native sample frequency was 96 kHz. The 44.1kHz
frequency was derived from the native one by a downsampling and upsampling process. This
method avoids any negative sample rate conversion (SRC) artifacts when matching project
different sample rates and also helps in project loading times.

Gain in and gain out setup in and out gains from -192 dB to +6 dB.
Power switch enables and disables internal bypass.

4.4.2. High pass filter

Power toggle switch enables and disables high pass filter. High pass
filter is 18 dB/octave filter with five positions at: 22 Hz, 39 Hz, 68 Hz,
120 Hz and 220 Hz.

4.4.3. Low pass filter

Magenta Eq Plug-in – User Guide

4.4.4. Frequency control

Frequency control is steeped and each band provides a wide range of
overlapping and interleaving frequency choices. Due to the passive
design, each switch position is selecting a different capacitor and
inductor.

Available frequencies are:

Low band (28 Hz to 1500 Hz): 28 Hz, 38 Hz, 68 Hz, 100 Hz, 150 Hz,
220 Hz, 330 Hz, 470 Hz, 680 Hz, 1 kHz and 1.5 kHz.

Low-mid band (82 Hz to 3900 Hz): 82 Hz, 120 Hz, 180 Hz, 270 Hz,
390 Hz, 580 Hz, 820 Hz, 1.2 kHz, 1.8 kHz, 2.7 kHz and 3.9 kHz.

High-mid band (200 Hz to 10 kHz): 200 Hz, 300 Hz, 420 Hz, 600 Hz,
900 Hz, 1.5 kHz, 2.2 kHz, 3.3 kHz, 4.7 kHz, 6.8 kHz and 10 kHz.

High band (650 Hz to 27 kHz): 650Hz, 900 Hz, 1.2 kHz, 2.2 kHz, 3.2
kHz, 4.7 kHz, 6.5 kHz, 10 kHz, 12 kHz, 18 kHz and 27 kHz.

4.4.5. Bandwidth control

Bandwidth control provides a similar “Q” control found in many
parametric equalizers but, due to the unique way it works, in both Bell
and Shelf modes, the most appropriate name is bandwidth control. In
Bell modes bandwidth control will work like most “Q” controls, the
wider shape is fully counter-clockwise and the narrower shape is fully
clockwise.

4.4.6. Gain control

Gain control provides boost and/or cut amount and does not work like
parametric equalizers. The maximum boost and cut is fully clockwise
and flat is fully counter-clockwise. Maximum boost or cut can be up to
29 of 38

Magenta Eq Plug-in – User Guide

20 dB but it depends on the bandwidth control due to the fair amount

of interaction between both controls, so you should not expect the
same value of boost or cut in each particular gain control value.

4.4.7. EQ filter type toggle switches

Shelf and bell filter type toggle switches are available only in the
lowest and highest bands and allow to setup the selected band as a
shelf and bell shape. The two mid-bands can be only bell shape.

4.4.8. EQ boost or cut toggle switch

Boost and cut toggle switch is available in each of the four bands and
allows to select whether that band will boost or cut.

4.4.9. Meters
In and out meters are 12 stereo led segments and they are setup as
volume unit (VU) meters but values are in full scale commonly used in
digital domain. Input-meter is post gain-in and output-meter is post
gain-out.

NOTE: Clicking on the controls while pressing “ctrl” on the computer keyboard, the control
returns to the twelve o’clock position.

5. In Use

5.1. Usage recommendation

Magenta Eq may sound different from other high-end equalizers and completely different from
any console equalizer. Hopefully it sounds better, sweeter, more musical and it complements
your console equalizer.

The main features that make Magenta Eq unique are: passive design with no negative
feedback loops, unique shelves and interaction between controls.

Magenta Eq controls are much more interactive with each other. We encourage you to
experiment with an open mind, without expectations of what control settings should do. It
takes a little getting used to the way the controls interact.

• Boost/cut gain controls are different from the conventional arrangement of a boost,
zero, cut potentiometer (baxandall). The switch also allows twice resolution of the gain
control and a more accurate zero;
• You may also find yourself getting away with what seems like massive amounts of
boost and keep in mind that bell filter only reaches 20 dB of boost at the narrowest
bandwidth, so first try wider bandwidth settings with no more than +6 dB of gain boost
(gain control at twelve o’clock). A reasonable starting point for bandwidth control for
shelf filters is straight up or between 10:00 and 14:00;
• High pass filter is a 18 dB/octave with no resonances. The 22 Hz position is very
subtle and is designed to remove sub-sonic frequencies that may have been boosted
by previous processing devices. 39 Hz position can be used similarly, but may be
audible with some material. 68 Hz position is also general purpose and ideal for most
vocals and pop removal. 120 Hz position is useful for some vocals and 220 Hz position
may be used with close miked hi-hats and percussion instruments;
• Low pass filter 60 to 18 dB/octave with no resonances. The 18 kHz position is a 60
dB/octave filter and is probably more useful for warming up digital sound programs and
removing some irritating super-sonic noise associated with digital to analog converters.
12 kHz position is a 30 dB/octave filter and can be considered general purpose hiss
killing. 9 kHz, 7.5 kHz and 6 kHz positions are intended for more creative sound
sculpting than utility filters, they have a 1.5 to 2 dB bump right before they cut at 18
dB/octave;
• 28 Hz and 38 Hz shelves are altered filters, at maximum value of gain control you will
get around + 16 dB boost or -16 dB cut and bandwidth control for those two lowest
frequencies acts as a high-pass filter to prevent excessive boosting of sub-sonic
frequencies;

• 18 kHz and 27 kHz shelves are also altered filters, bandwidth control for those two
lowest frequencies acts as a low-pass filter to prevent excessive boosting of super-
sonic frequencies. Also the resonance frequency is altered and you will find these
settings as an effective control between the balance of “air” and “sibilance” when you
boost a lot of highs;
• At other extreme high and low frequencies, including 10 kHz and 12 kHz, you might
get some unexpected results because of the interaction between shelf filters and
bandwidth control. For example: you can set up 20 dB of boost at 12 kHz and it can
sound like you just cut highs instead of boosting, in some ways Magenta Eq is
simulating the shape of a resonant synthesizer filter.
