Seshasayee Paper and Boards Limited (SPB), the flagship company belonging to 'ESVIN
GROUP', operates an integrated pulp, paper and paper board Mill at Pallipalayam, Erode-638
007, District Namakkal, Tamilnadu, India. SPB, incorporated in June 1960, was promoted by
Seshasayee Brothers (Pvt) Limited in association with a foreign collaborator M/s Parsons and
Whittemore, South East Asia Inc., USA. After commencement of commercial production,
having fulfilled their performance guarantee obligations, the foreign collaborators withdrew
in 1969. Main promoters of the Company as on date are a group of companies belonging to
the ESVIN group headed by Mr. N Gopalaratnam.

SPB commenced commercial production in December 1962, on

commissioning a 20000 tpa integrated facility, comprising a Pulp Mill and two Paper
Machines (PM-1 and PM-2), capable of producing, writing, printing, kraft and poster
varieties of paper. The Plant capacity was expanded to 35000 tpa in 1967-68, by modification
of PM-2 and addition of a third Paper Machine (PM-3). The cost of the expansion scheme, at
Rs 34 Millions, was part financed by All India Financial Institutions (Rs 31 Millions).
In the second stage of expansion, undertaken in 1976, capacity was enhanced to 55000 tpa,
through addition of a 60 tpd new Paper Machine (PM-4). Cost of the project, including cost
of a Chemical Recovery Boiler and other facilities for enhanced requirement of utilities, was
estimated at Rs. 176 Millions. The same was part financed by term loans from Institutions
and Banks to the extent of Rs. 145 Millions and the balance out of internal generation.

SPB undertook various equipment balancing and modernisation programmes,

since then, for improving its operating efficiency, captive power generation capacity, etc.,
upto 1992-93.

Expansion / Modernisation Project

The Company embarked on an Expansion / Modernisation Project to enhance its production
capacity from 60000 tonnes per annum, to 1,15,000 tonnes per annum and to upgrade some
of the existing facilities, at an estimated cost of Rs 1890 millions.
The said Expansion / Modernisation Project was completed in December 2000. After
successful trials, the Commercial Production out of the new Paper Machine commenced on
July 1, 2000.The current installed capacity of the Company stands at 1,15,000 tonnes per
annum.
Raw Materials
The Company's paper plant was originally designed for using bagasse, as the primary raw
material mixed with 20% bamboo fibre. Bagasse was being obtained from nearby sugar mill
on substitution basis using oil fired boilers. With sharp increase in oil prices in 1970-71, the
Company shifted over to the use of hardwood, at the time of its expansion undertaken in
1978. Raw material mix underwent a substantial change, with bamboo and hardwood forming
60% and 40%, respectively, of its raw material consumption. Soon Company started
apprehending difficulties in procurement of bamboo. In 1981, it added one more digester, to
increase the share of the hardwood in the furnish mix to 80% and restricting bamboo use to
only 20%. With the commissioning of more wood based industries in Tamilnadu, there was
again an apprehension about availability of hardwood. As a long term strategy, the Company
at this time decided on restructuring use of bagasse which was seen to be the most reliable
source of fibre for the entire Industry.
In 1984, the Company promoted Ponni Sugars and Chemicals Limited, as the
captive source for bagasse supply. It added bagasse handling systems and modernised PM-1
and PM-2, to shift over to the use of bagasse. The furnish mix for the existing Paper
Machines of the Company is 55% bagasse and 45% hardwood. The Company has vast
experience in handling bagasse and is expected to be one of the major strong points vis-à-vis
its competitors in India, as the Indian Paper Industry will continue to be bogged down by the
problem of raw material availability. For the new Paper Machine, the furnish is imported
waste paper and imported pulp which are sourced from far east countries, Europe and USA.
A small quantity is supplemented out of captive pulp production.

› To study the distribution activities in SPB Ltd

› To analyze the channels activities undertaken atSPB Ltd.
› To highlight the paper industry and achievements
› Enables workers to have a richer and more satisfying life
› Raises the standard of living of the workers .With the project gives an opportunity
to foreseen the physical distribution, which in turn will enhance their efficiency and
productivity.
› To access the attitude of indentors towards the organization
› To understand employees perception about promotional measures.
› To come with suggestive measures on the findings of the study to derive

.
SCOPE

The scope of channels of distribution cannot be limited. A channel of distribution or

trade channel is the path or routine along which goods are moved from Manufactures to ultimate
customer͛s .it is the distribution net work through which a producer put his product in hands of
actual customers a trade or marketing channel consists of producer͛s consumers and respective
middle men who intervene between the two. The channel serves as a connecting link between
producer and consumer. By bridging the gap between the point of production and the point of
consumption a channel creates time place and possession utilities. Seshasayee paper add boards
limited (SPB),the flag ship company belonging to the ESVIN GROUP ,operates in integrated pulp
paper and paper board mill at pallipalayam erode .the current installed capacity of company stands
at 1,15,000 tons per annum . SPB follows traditional mode of marketing strategy where intendors
play a major role in channels of distribution

Channels of distribution are important to the company due to the following reasons

Cost savings in specialization

Intendors are specialists in what they do and and can often perform tasks better than
companies who do not have distribution experience . intendors attempting to handle too many
things aspects of distribution may end up with exhausting company resources as they learn how to
distribute

Reduce exchange time

Not only are channel members able to reduce distribution cost by being experienced at what they do
they often perform their job more rapidly resulting in in faster product delivery

Customers want to conveniently shop for variety

Intenders have to understand what customers want in their shopping experience .resellers within
the channel of distribution serve 2 very important needs

> They give customers product they want bypurchasing from many suppliers
> They make it convenient to purchase by making products available in single location.

A channel of distribution is regarded as the important part of an organization and its scope in
marketing is wider
Chapter 4
Research Methodology and Limitation

 = = =

Research methodology is a way to systematically solve the research

problem. It may be understood as a science of studying how research is done scientifically. In
it we study the various steps that are generally adopted by a researcher in studying his
research problem along with the logic behind them. It is necessary for the researcher to know
not only the research methods but also methodology.
The methodology this study consists of both primary and secondary data. These data¶s are
collected from the respondents were through questionnaires. The primary data were collected
from the employees of the various departments of SPB Ltd. And personal interview. The
secondary data were collected from various published sources such as journals, brochures,
and websites.

Out of 475 employees in the organization a sample of 100 respondents were selected
for the study by way of random sampling. The sample of 100 included employees working in
various departments such as warehouse, packing, laying, designing, etc.

A research design is the basic plan that guides the data collection and
analysis phases of the research project. It is the framework, which specifies the type of
information to be collected, the sources of data, and the data collection procedure. A good
collection procedure will make sure that the information gathered is consistent with the study
objectives and that the data collected by accurate and economic procedures.
The objective of research project logically determines the characteristics desired in the
research design. Before starting any study of research the researcher anticipates the needs and
the circumstances of the proposed project and decides in advance what to obtain and what to
do if a research design has to serve well, for this different aspects of the project have to be
considered and the working plans and schedules should be prepared.
The main aim of the study is that to gain the knowledge about the concept of the Channels of
distribution.Through studies understood that Channels of distribution.of the SPB Ltd satisfied
with workers. The survey method is used as it is the best suited method for descriptive
research. So survey method is used for the study. The preparation of a research plan for a
study aid in establishing direction to the study and knowledge of exactly what has to be done,
how it has to be done.
The research design constitutes the blueprint for the collection, measurement and analysis of
data. It aids the researcher in the allocation of his limited resources by posing crucial choices.
Research design is the plan and structure of investigation so conceived as to obtain answers
to research questions. The plan is the overall scheme or program of the research. It includes
an outline of what the investigator will do from writing hypothesis and their operational
implications to the final analysis of data. A structure is the frame work research design
expresses both the structure of the research problem and the plan of investigation used to
obtain empirical evidence on relations of the problem.

 =

Sample size defines how many people need to be surveyed for the particular study. Large
samples give more reliable results than small samples. However it is not necessary to sample
the entire target population or even a substantial portion to achieve reliable results. The
sample size taken for this study is 100 respondents who are employees of SPB Ltd

As the study was based on ³channels of distribution had to collect first hand information from
the manager through personal interview method and also got the information in between the
employees through questionnaire

=

No research work can be undertaken without the co-operation of the respondents, who are
interviewed from which data was collected through questionnaire. Therefore, respondents
play an important role in these types of studies. The data collected were through
questionnaire. The employees of SPB Ltd have filled the questionnaire.

==

Collection of facts and figures about a phenomenon is one of the most important steps for any
study whether it is related to business, management, economics, or natural sciences.
Collection of data refers to systematic recording of results either by counting or by
enumeration. The entire structure of statistical analysis for any enquiry is based on systematic
collection of data. Broadly speaking there are two types of data
› Primary Data
› Secondary Data

Primary data is collected for the first time by investigators to serve a particular purpose. Such
a data is of original nature, the sources from where these data can be collected are known as
primary sources. Primary data can be collected by the following methods:
› Direct Personal Interview
› Indirect Oral Interview
› Mailed Questionnaire Method
› Schedule sent through Enumerators
In this report the primary data has been collected by personal interview as well as
questionnaire

 =

Secondary data refers to the data, which is originally collected and published by
authorities other than who require it. Such data is already available in some government
publications, research study, journals, newspapers and magazines. It is observed that
presently in large number of investigations secondary data are generally used because of the
availability of large amount of reliable published data from the above said resources. You can
save time and money by utilizing existing information, research must be very careful in using
secondary data; a careful scrutiny has to be made. Secondary data has enabled the researcher
to compare the previous data and the present data. Secondary data was collected from
Company Profile, Boucher and other books.
 ==

The research was conducted with in a limited duration.

Sample size of the study only 100

Some of the respondents were not responding to some of the questions

There was a fear among the employees to reveal their personal feelings.

Direct contact with employees was not possible in majority of situation

Chapter 5: Data Analysis & Interpretation

 =

The purpose of research is to find out something. Analysis of data is

performed to find out this something. Analysis of data is considered to be highly skilled and
technical job. It is through systematic analysis that the Underlying features of the data are
revealed and valid generalization. Are arrived at. Analysis of data therefore means critical
examination of the data for studying the characteristics of the object under study and for
determining the patterns of relationships among the variables relating to it using both
quantitative and qualitative methods.
Through analysis we attempt to study the collected data and derive results
while through interpretation we draw conclusions based on the result obtained. Analysis is
not complete without interpretation and interpretation cannot proceed without analysis. So
both are interdependent. The data collected by using questionnaires to the employees of SPB
Ltd are analyzed and interpreted by the way of simple percentage analysis
