D. DEVELOPMENT OF THE LESSON

a. Activity
CONCEPT NOTE # 2
“DEVELOPING THE WHOLE PERSON”

FIVE AREAS OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

1. Physiological Development
 Refers to physical changes in the body as well as the senses and changes in
skills related to movement. This is evident especially during the onset of
puberty when there is notable change in height, body mass and even body
hair growth.
2. Emotional Development
 “An emotion is a psychological experience (or state of awareness) that gives
you information about the world, and a feeling is your conscious awareness of
the emotion itself”. (McLaren, 2010).
 Four basic emotions, namely, happy, sad, afraid or surprised, and angry and
disgusted (Beck, 2004).
3. Social Development
 Is about our inborn capacity to relate to others, to connect, and to feel
belongingness.
4. Cognitive Development
 Refers to a person’s intellectual abilities as shown in his/her thoughts,
attitudes, beliefs, and values.
 Hoggs & Voughan (2005) defined attitude as “a relatively enduring
organization of beliefs, feelings, and behavioral tendencies towards
socially significant objects, groups events or symbols”.
Three components of Attitudes
i. Affective – feelings and emotions.
e.g. I am disgusted by snakes.

ii. Behaviorial – The way the attitude influences behavior.

e.g. Whenever I see snakes, I run as fast as I can.

iii. Cognitive – belief and knowledge about the object.

e.g. Snakes are dangerous.

5. Spiritual Development
 Is defined as discovering oneself beyond the ego known as the soul, spirit,
or the “inner essence” that is often disregarded or taken for granted. It is
experiencing a glimpse of the “inner guide” of one’s beliefs and values for
discovering meaning in life. It also permits people to connect with a Higher
Power that is called by many names like God, the Buddha, Allah, or “The
Life Force in Star Wars.”

Write your answer in your personal journal.

 Is it possible for a person to develop all aspects of the self at an equal
pace or is one aspects bound to be more developed than the others?
 Is a person more likely to be influenced by the environment or his/her
own internal mechanism during the process of development? Defend
your answer.

Read or listen in this music, entitled “Its My Life”. After you read this song write
the whole meaning of this song. Give at least 3 to 5 sentences.

It’s My Life

This ain't a song for the broken-hearted

No silent prayer for the faith-departed
I ain't gonna be just a face in the crowd
You're gonna hear my voice
When I shout it out loud

It's my life
It's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive
It's my life
This is for the ones who stood their ground
It's for Tommy and Gina who never backed down
Tomorrow's getting harder, make no mistake
Luck ain't enough
You've got to make your own breaks
It's my life
And it's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive
It's my life

You better stand tall when they're calling you out

Don't bend, don't break, baby, don't back down

It's my life
And it's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive

“DEVELOPMENTAL STAGES IN MIDDLE AND LATE ADOLESCENCE”

To understand the whole developmental stages of human

developmental stages of human development, the work of the
developmental psychologist, Erick Erickson (1902-19994), is worth
looking into. He is best known for his theory of eight stages of
psychosocial development.
Erick Erickson believed that personality develops throughout the life
cycle and strectches from infancy to old age.

Developmental Task during Adolescence

There are times through when the transition between middle and late adolescence may not easily
be felt. Changes are more internal than visible to the naked eye. Below is a summary of findings by
Sedra Spano for ACT for Youth Upstate Center in collaboration with Cornell University, University of

C. Development of the Lesson

a. ACTIVITY
Concept Note: BEING HAPPY

Do not forget that life is the greatest enterprise in the world. Only you can prevent it from going into
decadence. There are many that need you, admire you, and love you.
Being happy is not having sky without storms, or roads without accidents, or work without fatigue, or
relationships without disappointments.
Being happy is finding strength in forgiveness, hopes in one’s battles, security at the stage of fear,
love in disagreements.
Being happy is not only to treasure the smile, but you can also reflect on the sadness. It is not only
commemorating the event, but also learning lessons in failures. It is not just having joy with the
applause, but also having joy in the anonymity.
Being happy is to recognize that it is worthwhile to live, despite all the challenges ,
misunderstandings, and times of crises.
Being happy is to stop being the victim of problems but become an actor in history itself. It is to thank
god for the miracle of life.
Being happy is to bear with courage when hearing a “no”, have the security in receiving criticism,
even if it’s unfair. It is to kiss our love ones, even if they have hurt us.
Being happy is having the maturity to say “ I was wrong” and “forgive me”. It is the sensitivity to say “I
need you” and ability to say “I love you”.
Happiness is not about a perfect life. Never give up from being happy because life is an incredible
show. And you are a special human being!

C. Development of the Lesson

a. ACTIVITY
Concept Note: ENCOURAGEMENT: THE COURAGE TO BE IMPERFECT
Encouragement is the key ingredient for improving your relationships with others. It is the single most
important skill necessary for getting along with others –so important that the lack of it could be
considered the primary cause of conflict and misbehavior.
Encouragement as a psychological idea, was developed by psychiatrist Alfred Adler in early 20 th
Century and continued to evolve through the work of Adler’s follower Rudolph Dreikurs.
Half of the job of encouragement lies in avoiding discouraging words and actions.
Most commonly, we discourage in five general ways:
1. We set standards that are too high for others to meet because we are overly ambitious.
2. We focus on mistakes as a way to motivate change or improved behavior.
3. We make constant comparisons.
4. We automatically give negative spin to the actions of others.
5. We dominate others by overly helpful, implying that they are unable to do it as well.
Encouragement conveys the idea that all human beings are worthwhile, simply because they exist. It
enhances a feeling of belonging which leads to greater social interest
To become an encouraging person, one must distinguish encouragement from discouragement. We
all have the power to become encouraging people. The choice is always, is yours.

Concept Note: DEVELOPMENTAL STAGES
Human development focuses on human growth and changes across the lifespan, including physical,
cognitive, social, intellectual, perceptual, personality, and emotional growth.
The study of human developmental stages is essential to understanding how humans learn, mature
and adapt.

DEVELOPMENTAL STAGE CHARACTERISTICS

1. PRE-NATAL (Conception to Birth) • Hereditary endowments and sex are fixed
• Internal and External body features are developed.
2. INFANCY (Birth to 2years) • Foundation age when basic behavior are organized
and many ontogenetic maturation skills are developed.
3. EARLY CHILDHOOD (2-6 years) • Pre-gang age, exploratory age and questioning
• Language and elementary reasoning are acquired
• Initial socialization is experienced.
4. LATE CHILDHOOD (6-12 years) • Gang and creativity age when self-help, social, and
school skills, and play are developed.
5. ADOLESCENCE (Puberty-18 years) • Transition age from childhood to adulthood when sex
maturation and rapid physical development occur
resulting to changes in ways of feeling, thinking and
acting.
6. EARLY ADULTHOOD (18-40 years) • Age of adjustment to new patterns of life and roles
such as spouse, parent, and bread winner.
7. MIDDLE AGE (40 years to Retirement) • Transition age when adjustments to initial physical and
mental decline are experienced.

a. ACTIVITY
Concept Note: YOU NEED TO TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR FUTURE
According to Bo Sanchez, there are 3 types of people in the world:
1. MOVIEGOER-watches the movie of their lives admires some part and criticizes others. Aside from
that, they do nothing else. A moviegoer always feels that she has absolutely no control of their lives
–except to comment about it. They are the most pathetic and miserable in the world.
2. ACTOR- does not only watch the movie of her life because she knows she’s the actor and can control
a big part of her life. They are the happy bunch. Many times, they wish the movie would end in
another way but realize that they have no say in such things.
3. SCRIPTWRITER-does not only watch, and does not only act. She actually creates the whole movie in
her mind. She determines what she will say and do. She realizes that she has an enormous control
over her life, and sees to it that that the movie of her life will turn out beautiful.
