1. How is citizenship, at least the conceptual level, defined?

- Citizenship involves an awareness and understanding of the self and the larger community, usulally the
nation.

2. In practice, where is an individual considered an active and responsible citizen?

- When she/ he entails his or her rights and privileges and responsibilities to the state.

pp. 198

Why is citizenship, specially the context of identity construction and sense of belongingness,
important in nation-building?

- Identity construction and sense of belongingness are important in nation-building because in identity
construction you are building your values, your choice and your wants. In sense of belongingness you
will feel the participation or your rights and deserve. So basically these are the aspects that the citizen
must have to build a nation, the willingness to participate and make a change for the country.

Reflect Upon

pp. 195

What social, political, economic, and environmental issues have meaning and value to you as a
student and as a citizen? Why are these concerns important to you?

- I see the current political and voting system here as a joke, since there is no transparency, corrupt,
ineffective, and it is a popularity contest. The pandemic does not dampen my resolve though to demand
accountability from government over the worsening situation of the economic and educational sector. I
see the lack of political will in investing in the education sector that's why when the pandemic came, we
are struggling. And we can't deal with the problems of decades of underfunding in one day and now
we're experiencing the deficiency of underfunding. I would say that this situation requires us to be
critical of what's happening now in our social movements and in our politics and also to decide to take
action.

pp. 200-201

What are your privileges and obligations as a member of your community? How about to the
Philippines state as its citizen?

- As a member of my community and a Philippine citizen it’s my privileges and obligations to follow the
rules, know my rights, vote the candidate that I think is the best for my country. As a student that’s in
Jose Rizal quote “ Ang kabataan ang pagasa ng bayan” it’s my elect the right officials that is responsible

Beyond Walls

1. In both readings there’s a participation which the volunteer engineering student checked the
building in Maasin City, they checked it whether it is good or not. Since it has lack of many
aspects they decided to talk to the personal who is in charge to that project and think for a
solution. Also because of people’s participation, group of Aeeron manage to decreased the
price of books from 120 to 3-40 per book.

2. These avenues are extremely effective since they’re manage to solve some of the problems that
we have right not of course with the help of the people who wants to help. Some of the
challenges that I noticed are some officials didn’t consult their fellow citizen to help. They want
to do it without the help of some people. Also the lack or budget and lack of personnel and
volunteers.
