Play and run

by Tony Carr in Attacking, Practice plans

This week’s session is designed to improve your players’ ability to play forward passes and
run off the ball into attacking areas.
What this session is about
1.  Passing forward.
2.  Running off the pass.
3.  Creating opportunities to score.
What to think about
The best players can manipulate the ball to create space going forward. When passing
forward, the job is not complete – the player must now run off the ball and into attacking
areas to receive a return pass.

What you get your players to do
Mark out a 25-yard square. Put manned goals 10 yards outside the square facing each other.
Players start on all four corners. You stay to the side and serve in balls when needed.
To start, a player runs to receive a pass from you. The player passes to a team mate in the
corner, runs forward to get the ball back and shoot at goal.
The player making the return pass now enters the area and receives a second pass from the
coach to repeat the activity in the opposite direction.
After shooting, the player goes to a new corner and waits to combine with a team mate.
You pass the ball to an attacker. He plays a 1-2 with the end player and shoots for goal.

Development
In the same playing area, play 2v2 inside the square. You pass to one team who have to use
the players on the corner to create space. After passing, an attacker looks to get the ball back
outside the square and fire in a shot.
Once a shot is made or a goal scored, two new players from each team enter to create a new
2v2.
Play 2v2. You pass to one team who use the end players to create openings for a shot.

Game situation
Continue on the same pitch.
Play 4v4 with each team having one player on an opposite corner.
The aim for each team is to complete four consecutive passes and play forward to one of their
corner players. The player who receives the final pass can now dribble forward to score.
Play 4v4. After four consecutive passes a corner player releases a striker to score.
