Creative Writing MELC 11
Creative Writing MELC 11
2. An essay usually has at least three body paragraphs, and these will be the
arguments, evidence, or topics that support your thesis.
Each body paragraph will begin with a topic sentence which introduces
its topic. All of the information in that paragraph will be clearly and
logically related to that topic sentence, which in turn should obviously
relate to the thesis.
3. A conclusion should wrap up your essay, but should not introduce new
information or arguments. It should begin with a sentence that looks a lot like
your thesis to summarize the general points of the paper as a whole, and then
draw your paper neatly to a close.
Context
The English word “context” comes from the Latin verb contexto which
means “to connect or weave together.” It is the background, environment,
setting, framework, or surroundings of events or occurrences within which a
work of writing is situated.

Types of Context
1. Literary context “relates to the particular form a passage takes (the literary
genre) and to words, sentences, and paragraphs that surround the passage
you are studying” (Duvall & Hayes, 2012, p. 150).
To determine the literary context of a literary piece, you need to identify the
following:
a. Its genre (e.g. poetry, drama, fiction, and nonfiction)
b. Author’s purpose (e.g. to inform, to persuade, to entertain, to explain)
c. Text structure (e.g. description, chronology, comparison,
problem/solution, cause-effect)
d. Literary devices used (e.g. Imagery, Metaphors, Similes, etc.)

Activity 1. The Picture of my Story
Example:
I looked around me. Every person was busy and felt like no single
second is wasted. I saw weary eyes and heard trembling voices. I walked in a
hurry. Every chirp of my heels seemed like it adds her heartbeat to survive left
foot thumb amputation.
4 years ago, a doctor handed me the medical result of my mother. My
tears fell and my hands were shaking. I gazed at my mother to her bedroom
making her believe that my tears are figures of joy. The surgery was
successful but I had a thought that a diabetic person is like a cancer patient
having an illness that gradually melts the body. Despite the doubt, our family
fully supported her recovery with hope and faith. We bought her medicines
prescribed by her medical doctor and surgeon.
Lately, I learned from a credible source on the internet that Amlodipine,
one of her maintenance medicines has a bad effect to the body of a patient. I
concluded that her medicines lead my mother to acquire kidney problem.
Now, we are monitoring her creatinine to delay the damage of her kidney.
With my experiences, I agree to what I have read about pharmacy that
it creates costumer not cure. Besides, I choose to limit the rice I take and
restrict myself to oily and salty foods such as meat, street foods and junk
foods and drinking unhealthy juices. As what the Bible says, “Be not among
drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of meat, for the drunkard and the
glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags (Proverbs
23:20-21).

Example:
My story informs the reader how my faith to synthetic medicine
weakened. It started by using a figurative language. I compared the chirping
of my heels to the heartbeat of my mother because every step I took in the
hospital was important to save her life. The first paragraph revealed the
setting or context of my story while the next paragraphs describe how my
family helped my mother to recover. The last paragraph indicates that my
experiences and a bible verse guide me to stay healthy.

Activity 2. Context in the Lyrics and Scripts
Directions: Listen to a song or watch a movie. Take down at least five (5) lyrics
and/or scripts in which context is stated/ implied.
Example:
Standout Lyrics: “You are beautiful no matter what they say/ Words can’t bring you
down/ You are beautiful in every single way/ Yes, words can’t bring you down”-
Beautiful by Cristina Aguilera
Social issue is the implied context of the lyrics because the time it was written,
bullying was so rampant and the singer also experienced it. In her song, she
encourages her listeners to possess self-love and to take a stand against bullying.

Imagine
John Lennon
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace, you
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world, you
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
