 Preface
First of all, we want to express our gratefullness to Allah SWT. So that we can
arrange this paper to fulfill our task to explain about material below with the title “News Item
Text”. This paper are made to be further explanation from our presentation in “Extensive
Reading” class.

We also want to say Thank you to our lecturer, Miss Nikmah Sistia Eka Putri, M.Pd
for this opportunity. We also aware that this paper might be not as perfect as other but we
will grateful with all critism and suggestion from everyone who read this paper. We hope
everyone who read this paper will get enough knowledge and will useful for future task.

And lastly, we want to say sorry in advance if our paper or presentation are still not
that good or we make a mistake.

Background

News Item Text are a kind of text that consist from information to inform reader about events
of the day. From this we can expect that the aim from our problem is that we understand how
to write and understand the text from explanation below. This kind of text are often we see in
newspaper, TV news etc.

Problem Formulation

1. What is the definition and purpose of New Item Text?

2. What are the generic structure of News Item Text?
3. What are language feature of News Item Text?

A. Definition of News Item Text

News item text are a kind of text that informs reader about events of the day. The events are
considered newsworthy or important. It means if there is an important event that should be
known by many people, then this event deserves news. Well, the news text is called the news
item text. However, if there are events that people do not deserve, then they are not definitely
worth to be news.

The purpose of this text is to present about new information that newsworthy and
important of the day.

B. Generic Structure of News Item Text.

1. Main Events / Newsworthy event : it recounts the event in summary form.
2. Elaboration / Background event : they elaborate what happened, to whom, in what
circumstance.
3. Resource of Information (Source) : it contains comments by participants in, witnesses
to and authorities expert on the event.

C. Language Structure of News Item Text.

– Focusing on circumstances (using a simple language in writing the text)

– Using saying verbs for example “She said”, “informed”, “told”, “reported”.
– Sometimes at the beginning of news, the scene or the place where the events happen is
mentioned.
– Using Past tense in explaining news events. But if it is a fact that until now still happen or
still in the form of fact, then can use simple present tense.
– Short, telegraphic information about story captured in headline.
– Using adverbs: time, place and manner.
– Uses of material processes to retell the event.

Town ‘Contaminated’

Newsworthy events Moscow – A Russian journalist has uncovered evidence of another

Soviet nuclear catastrophe, which killed 10 sailors and contaminated an entire town.
Background Events Yelena Vazrshavskya is the first journalist to speak to people who
witnessed the explosion of a nuclear submarine at the naval base of Shkotovo – 22 near
Vladivostock. 3 The accident, which occurred 13 months before the Chernobyl disaster,
spread radioactive fall-out over the base and nearby town, but was covered up by officials of
the Soviet Union. Residents were told the explosion in the reactor of the Victor-class
submarine during a refit had been a ‘thermal’ and not a nuclear explosion. And those
involved in the clean up operation to remove more than 600 tons of contaminated material
were sworn to secrecy.

Source A board of investigators was later to describe it as the worst accident in the history of
the Soviet Navy.

Conclusion

In conclusion, News Item Text are a text that contain information to reader from events of the
day. And the purpose is to inform reader a newsworthy and important events that happen.
Using three generic structure that are Main events, Elaboration and Source of the events. And
the language structure that consist from using action verb, saying verb, using simple past
tense and simple present tense if the events still happen, short and telegraphic information
mention in the headline, using adverb etc like already written above.
