IBM System Storage DS4700 Express models offer
a 4 Gbps high-performance DS4000 midrange disk
system for HVEC
Overview
IBM expands its DS4000 series
midrange disk storage offerings of
high-performance, high-availability,
business-critical storage solutions
with the introduction of IBM System
Storage  DS4700 Express models 70
and 72.
These models are designed to
operate at up to 4 Gbps Fibre
Channel speeds for connectivity to 4
Gbps attached host systems and
optionally attached 4 Gbps DS4000
storage expansion units.
The DS4700 Express models come in
a 3U rack-mountable enclosure,
which accommodates up to 16
E-DDMs, and houses redundant,
dual-active intelligent RAID
controllers that support RAID levels
0, 1, 3, 5, and 10. The DS4700 has
an internal physical storage capacity
of up to 4.8 TB using optional 300 GB
E-DDMs. Physical storage capacity
can be increased up to 33 TB by
attachment of up to six DS4000
storage expansion units.
Also new with this announcement
are optional 4 Gbps Fibre Channel
PCI-X HBAs for the DS4700 and
DS4800 disk systems, and 4 Gbps
Fibre Channel E-DDMs for the
DS4700 and the EXP810 Storage
Expansion Unit.

Description
DS4700 Express models 70 and 72
System Storage DS4700 Express models 70 and 72 are
part of the DS4000 series storage products that address
the needs of midrange and departmental storage
requirements. They are designed to deliver high
performance with advanced function and high availability.
These new models employ sixth-generation architecture
that deliver 4 Gbps FC connectivity directly to host
servers, SAN fabric, and disk drive expansion enclosures.
DS4700 Express models provide end-to-end 4 Gbps
support when using the new System p5 single- and
dual-port 4 Gbps Fibre Channel HBAs available in both
AIX 5L and Linux on POWER . The combination of
System p5 and DS4700 Express can help maximize your
infrastructure investment.
DS4700 Express models come in compact, 3U
rack-mountable enclosures that contain dual intelligent,
high-performance RAID controllers. They can
accommodate up to 16 E-DDMs for up to 4.8 TB internal
physical storage capacity. Model 70 comes with 2 GB of
cache memory (1 GB per controller), while model 72
comes with 4 GB cache (2 GB per controller).
Both models connect to host servers and SAN fabric via
host ports and connect to DS4000 storage expansion units
via disk drive expansion ports. Model 70 contains four 4
Gbps FC host ports and four 4 Gbps FC drive ports. Model
72 employs eight 4 Gbps FC host ports and four 4 Gbps
FC drive ports. You can enable the ports by populating
them with 4 Gbps small form-factor pluggable (SFP)
transceivers. Four shortwave 4 Gbps SFP transceivers
are included with the model 70 shipment group and six
shortwave 4 Gbps SFP transceivers are included with
model 72.
For the model 70, depending on your requirements, you
can use the four supplied SFP transceivers to populate
the four host ports (two ports per controller), if the
configuration does not require DS4000 storage expansion
units. Alternatively, you can use the four SFP
transceivers to populate two host ports (one port per
controller) and two disk expansion ports (one port per
controller). If you need additional connectivity, you can
order up to two shortwave 4 Gbps SFP transceiver options
(part number 26K7941) for connectivity to all host and
drive ports. Each shortwave SFP transceiver option
contains two shortwave SFP transceivers and populates
two host or two drive ports.

For the model 72, depending on your requirements, you
can use the six supplied SFP transceivers to populate six
of the eight host ports (three ports per controller), if the
configuration does not require DS4000 storage expansion
units. Alternatively, you can use the six SFP transceivers
to populate four host ports (two ports per controller) and
two disk expansion ports (one port per controller) or two
host ports and four drive ports. If you need additional
connectivity, you can order up to three shortwave 4 Gbps
SFP transceiver options (part number 26K7941) for
connectivity to all host and drive ports on model 72.
You can expand storage capacity by attaching DS4000
storage expansion units for configurations up to 33 TB
physical storage capacity. Up to six DS4000 storage
expansion units (up to maximum of 112 E-DDMs) can be
attached to the DS4700 Express models. Model 70
enables up to 16 E-DDMs. The model 70 EXP 1 to 3
Attachment option (part number 41Y5222) enables up to
three DS4000 storage expansion units (up to 64 E-DDMs).
The model 70 EXP 4 to 6 Attachment option (part number
41Y5225) enables up to six DS4000 expansion units (up to
112 E-DDMs).
Model 72 enables up to three DS4000 storage expansion
units (up to 64 E-DDMs). The EXP 4 to 6 Attachment
option (part number 41Y0704) enables up to six DS4000
expansion units (up to 112 E-DDMs).
Key features of the Express models 70 and 72 include:

Tier 2 CRUs: You can install a Tier 2 CRU yourself or
request IBM to install it at no additional charge.
Based upon availability, CRUs will be shipped for NBD
delivery. IBM specifies, in the materials shipped with a
replacement CRU, whether a defective CRU must be
returned to IBM. When return is required, return
instructions and a container are shipped with the
replacement CRU. You may be charged for the
replacement CRU if IBM does not receive the defective
CRU within 30 days of your receipt of the replacement.
