ABSTRACT:
A teacher is always cited as the Guru and is considered to be a very important person in the
life of a student. Teachers are regarded as sculptors who take adequate care and pains in
carving and shaping the lives of the students. In ancient days the gurukul system was
considered to be more apt and traditional where the students stay along with their gurus, they
not only gain academic qualification, but also learn other values and skills of life, and they
are completely nurtured under the care of the guru. Slowly the classroom system replaced the
gurukul system. With the development of technology, technology-based learning found a new
pace in the educational system, however it did notcompletely replace the classroom method
of teaching till the outbreak of the Pandemic Covid-19 especially in the Indian Scenario.

The outbreak of the Covid-19 Pandemic, has necessitated and initiated the Online Education
System.Online education system has become the trend and need of the present situation in the
global scenario. The outbreak of the pandemic has made a rapid change in the style of
working, teaching and learning pattern. Online learning is learning is in otherwords called
asthe learning over the internet. It has facilitated the connection of students from every nook
and corner of the world. The Physical barriers, geographical barriers no longer exist in the
new pattern of teaching.

The physical classrooms are replaced by virtual classrooms. The Course Management System
(CMS) software helps the process of online teaching and learning feasible . CMS helps the
teachers to design and deliver their courses within a flexible framework. Learning through e-
books, journals, videos, recorded lectures, discussion forums are some of the online teaching
methodologies.

based learning

1.INTRODUCTION:
Virtual learning or E-learning is the talk of the day. Information technology enabled learning
system helps the children to learn from the comfort of their home. There has been a shift in
the pattern of imparting education as a result of the outbreak of the pandemic.

Requirement for online education includes a computer with a browser, internet connection, an

email account and speakers or head phones. 79% of the students use smartphones to attend
classes and study online ,17% of them use laptops and 4 % use tablets and other mode –
according to the survey by Vidyasaarathi, NSDL e-Governance.

In a classroom atmosphere, the student is under the guidance and control of the
instructors and peers, who can hold a student accountable for their course-work. In contrast,
theonline education system involves more of responsibility from the students , resulting in a
shift from interdependence to independence in the mode of acquiring education . Technology
also adds on to the visual experience by incorporating animations that can be used
interactively for effective learning and communication.

As students progress to higher classes in school, they seek more autonomy and intellectual
freedom. Online learning can help them pursue highly individualised learning programmes,
possibly even thecollege level courses at ease. These, combined with hands-on exercises,
real world exploration, and thorough assessments, can be highly beneficial to their learning
progress. They can explore their options by trying out introductory topics from different
fields, before committing to a specialisation.

2.OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:

1..To study the impact of online education on students

2.To study the problems faced by students during the course of online education

3.LIMITATIONS:

1.Only 102 respondents belonging to classes 9 to 12 were taken for the study

2.All the respondents belonged to private institutions

3. Respondents are from selected localities of Chennai city

4.RESEARCH METHODOLOGY:
This empirical research is based on primary data collected by questionnaire circulated to the
respondents. The target population was the respondents from Chennai, about 102 responses
were validated out of 115 questionnaires received in total.Percentage analysis, chi square
and weighted average analysis is used for the study. Secondary data was collected from
journals, magazines and newspapers and e-resources .

5.REVIEW OF LITERATURE

1.The major part of the world is on quarantine due to the serious outbreak of this global
pandemic Covid-19 and therefore many cities have turned into phantom cities and its effects
can be seen in schools, colleges, and universities too. Betwixt all this online teaching and
online learning can be termed as the panacea for the crisis. ( Shivangi Dhawan June 2020)

2.Distance learning is used interchangeably with online learning,web-based

learning,computer-based learning and e-learning.E-learning covers digital collaboration and
virtual classrooms and delivery of content via internet (Mehdi Sagheb Tehrani)

3.In a matter of days, our society changed, schools were closed, most of the stores and malls
were closed, and many countries ordered nationwide lockdown due to the COVID-19 (Shim
&Lee, 2020).

4.Internet education is soon to become the dominant form of education in the world. A lot of
effort is being devoted into furthering the work methods and communication among students
and professors, aimed at bettering the quality of this kind of studying( Radovic-Markovi)

6.ADVANTAGES OF ONLINE EDUCATION

Vol. 1 No. 2 (2021): Impact of Covid-19 on Society

Online education helps learning from different teachers and mentors. It fills the gaps of
offline teaching barring the geographical barriers, requires only an internet connection.

Online education provides a chance to study at one’s own speed and there is no rush.

Online education usually is more affordable as it does away with the usual transportation
expenses and other expenses incurred by the students at an institution.

Online education gives the comfort of learn from home and learn at your convenience

7.DISADVANTAGES OF ONLINE EDUCATION

Online education also has some fundamental drawbacks, lack of infrastructure is the
predominant drawback of the system of education.

Using the computer too much is stressful and harmful to the health of the students. It results
in lack of physical activities

Online education detaches a student from his classmates, Online education also has
significantly less self-assessment.

Face to face , personal interaction with the teachers is lost in online education system

8.3.WEIGHTED AVERAGE ANALYSIS:

Weighted Average is the average of a data set that recognizes certain numbers as more
important than others.

Weighted mean = Σwx/Σw

 Σ = summation
 w = the weights. (Weights 5,4,3,2,1 is given to each category)
 x = the value.
Rank analysis was carried out to find out the weighted average of each of the factors which
had an impact on the online education system.Likert’s scale was used to analyse the
responses collected.

relationship between the two variables

9.SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:

1.On total, 102 respondents were chosen for the survey and all of them belong to private
institutions.

2.35.29% (36) respondents are in the age 15years.

3.44.11%(45) respondents belong to class 11th..

4.64.7%(66) respondents attend class via zoom platform.

5.52.9%(54)respondents attend online classes through mobile phone.

6.55.8%(57)respondents attend online classes of 3-8hours

7.70.6%(72)respondents use google classroom as their learning platform

8.55/9%(57)respondents use mobile data for attending classes.

9.Chi square analysis reveals that there is no association between class studying and the
opinion about the fact that online education gives stress free learning

ICIDR International Journal Of Interdisciplinary Research Page 10

ICIDR International Journal Of Interdisciplinary Research
Vol. 1 No. 2 (2021): Impact of Covid-19 on Society

10.Weighted average analysis reveals that respondents are able to take up their tests on time
and is ranked first. The fact that they have adequate equipment’s and facility to attend
classes is ranked second and that they are able to get thorough knowledge of the subject is
ranked as the last.

11. Correlation Analysis reveals that there is weak correlation between age of the respondents
and their opinion that online education gives stress free learning. Correlation between the
gender of the respondents their opinion that they are able to cope up with online teaching
exhibits perfect negative correlation.

The demand of the present scenario has pushed up the trend of online teaching and education.
According to the 2017-18 national samplesurvey report on education, it is been found that
only 24% of Indian households have internet facility. The national wide survey conducted by
Ministry of Rural Development during 2017-18 has revealed that 66% of India’s population
is in villages and only 47% of theIndian households received electricity for more than 12
hours per day and only 8% of the homes with young members have a computer with net
facility.

The above-mentioned factors contribute as a major hurdle for promotion of online education,
more over even with the facilities it is observed that online education does not fill the gaps of
offline teaching and there is not much of a student-teacher personal rapport. Moreover, it
reveals that there is increase in the stress level of the students while attending online classes.
Though virtual classrooms, online classes, e-books, e-learning have become the trend of the
times, the taste and essence of traditional learning is not substituted.
