10 10 Concert
10 10 Concert
Reilly Elliot
On October 10th, 2021 I went to the 311 Live From the Ride tour in Sacramento California at
Heart Health Park. At this concert, Iya Terra, Iration, and 311 played. I went with 2 of my
friends. One of them had heard of 311 but was mainly going for Iration which I put them on a
few years earlier. And my other friend and I were both really big fans of both 311 and Iration.
None of us had really gotten into Iya Terra but were still pretty excited to see them. The concert
started off right when the sun was going down so it was still light out when Iya Terra was
performing. Iya Terra is a reggae band with their name meaning higher ground who came about
around 2015. Since it was still light out they didn’t have many effects but still put on a great
show. They played for around an hour before heading off stage giving their thanks to all that
came to watch. Then Iration came on. Iration is a band that mixes reggae, rock, and pop. By now
it was pretty dark so they took advantage of this using lights and even fog. I had never seen any
pictures of them so it was pretty cool to see what they looked like coming onto the set. Iration’s
members started off in Hawaii but started their career in Isla Vista near Santa Barbara in 2004
with their big hits coming in 2010 and on. They took the music industry by surprise. No one had
ever heard anything like it since it wasn’t any specific type of music but a blend of many. They
have a blend of guitar (distortion in some songs) keyboard drums and bass as well as horns in
some songs. At the concert, they had a pretty long setlist which included; Already Gold, Hotting
Up, Reelin, Guava Lane, Turn Around, Coastin’, Energy, Chill Out, Time Bomb, Back Around,
and ended it off with Summer Nights. They even played a cover of The White Stripes 7 Nation
Army which was really amazing. I wasn’t really sure what to expect from them in person since
this was the very first live performance I saw but they blew my expectations out the window.
One of my favorite things was how they used the lights with their songs. For example in the song
Guava Lane there would be a few rests followed by a hit of a block and the singer would cue the
lights by pausing and pointing his fingers and the lights would flash. I thought this was a really
awesome effect and made the show better than it already was. After they ended with Summer
Nights there was an intermission so my friends and I went to get something to drink. Most places
were already sold out of water but I eventually found a food truck that had some and then we
went back to the field where the concert was taking place and got a spot around 30 feet away
from the stage. 311 had a countdown for when they went on and we were all super excited.
Luckily we got to our spot pretty early because it filled up a lot for 311. Once they came out
everyone including me had their phone out recording. 311 is a big group from the early and mid
90’s that changed music. They were the perfect blend of rock, funk, and reggae all in one. 311
had influenced many artists in their career including both Iya Terra and Iration and those bands
made it clear that 311 made a difference to them and how much it meant to perform with them.
Ever since their self-titled album in 95, the band took off gaining a lot of popularity. They played
for a pretty long time with a setlist including; Freeze Time, Come Original, Prisoner, Do You
Right, Sunset in July, Wildfire, All Mixed Up, What the?!, Beautiful Disaster, Jackpot, Love
Song (a cover of The Cure), Applied Science, Use of Time, You wouldn’t Believe, Amber,
Don’t Stay Home, Creature, and finishing with an encore of Feels So Good and Down. I was
completely blown away by their performance. They even had P-Nut play a 3-minute bass solo
which was amazing. P-Nut is one of my bass idols along with Flea from the Chili Peppers and
Les Claypool from Primus who I got to see 5 days after this. They also had a very impressive
drum solo where eventually all the members of the band brought out giant drums and everyone
was playing passing around their drumsticks to one another. 311 took advantage of it being pitch
black outside and used a lot of fog and light effects which made it a very visual concert.
Everyone around me and my friends were taking quite a bit of broccoli and cauliflower it felt
like there was a layer of smoke added to the atmosphere. The band has many songs referencing
drugs so it wasn’t much of a surprise but we had an amazing time even though we were sober. I
hadn’t heard a few of the songs they played such as Freeze Time, You Wouldn’t Believe, and a
few others which are now some of my favorite songs by them. When they ended with Down the
entire crowd went crazy it was the perfect way to leave it off. What I love about this band is that
they have a mix of everything. For example, they can be almost like heavy metal with Down but
then in other songs, they’re a lot softer like in Amber or Sunset In July. Overall this was
definitely a great first concert to go to and has made me want to see them again if they go on tour
