Top 15 facts about the iPhone and Apple – see all 33 iPhone models ever made

On January 9, 2007, Apple co-founder and former CEO, Steve Jobs, released the
original iPhone in his most iconic keynote speech. Since then, we have had a
plethora of iPhones from Apple and the company has been growing since then. The
prelude to the mobile phone revolution helped Apple grow into a tech giant with a
market cap of more than $3 trillion over the next 15 years. That was in 2007 when
Nokia was still the largest mobile phone brand. “The iPhone is a revolutionary,
amazing product that is at least five years ahead of any other phone,” Jobs said in
his keynote speech. As remarkable as Jobs’ introduction was, the iPhone really
changed the world instantly. Whether you’re a loyal iPhone fan or have never owned
one, acknowledge the huge impact the iPhone has had on our daily lives. While the
iPhone is not the first smartphone (we can’t take that away from IBM which was at
least 15 years earlier), the iPhone leapfrogged far beyond the competition. In
fact, we can safely say that the mobile revolution started with the iPhone. The
iPhone did not only make the internet accessible to everyone, it also made
photography part of our everyday life. Furthermore, the arrival of this device
changed the creation and distribution of software. Thus, the impact of the iPhone
is something that will be remembered for a long time. Top 15 facts about the iPhone

Fifteen Years Of The iPhone Disrupting Industries

The iPhone continues to disrupt legacy industries while creating new ways to
utilize the internet ... [+] for both consumers and businesses. getty On Sunday,
January 9, 2022, Apple celebrated the 15th anniversary of the iPhone. The iPhone
birthed the smartphone industry and disrupted many other industries in this
timeframe.  Interestingly, the roots of the iPhone began with a design team inside
Apple who created a tablet-like device in the years 2002-2003. In the early 1990s
pen computing was the rage and was delivered on a type of tablet. If you look at
Apple's Newton, it too was a form of a tablet that had many problems and was killed
when Jobs took over in 1997. However, the concept of a tablet was bandied about
throughout most of the 1990s and engineers kept trying to create a model that would
work. This design team inside Apple showed Steve Jobs a prototype of their take on
a tablet and Jobs, who was riding the successful wave of the iPod at the time,
asked if they could make it smaller.  Over the next four to five years Apple
engineers did indeed make a smaller "tablet" that used touch as an interface and
the iPhone was introduced to great fanfare in 2007. It was introduced during the
CES Winter show in Las Vegas that year and I had to fly back two days early from
CES to be at the announcement in person.  I had the unique opportunity to be
briefed on the trailblazing iPhone just before the launch took place and Phil
Schiller, who was VP of marketing at Apple then, and Greg Joswiak, who had the role
of marketing the iPhone, showed me their newest creation. Phil Schiller put the
iPhone on the table in front of me in the off position. He asked me what I saw. I
told him a saw a piece of glass. He then turned on the iPhone and its screen lit up
and he then said, "this is where the magic is" and walked me through a demo.  There
were a lot of rumors about Apple releasing a smartphone; In fact, it was nicknamed
the "Jesus Phone" by some, from the nearly religious fervor it created. When I saw
the iPhone I knew Apple had just created a totally new concept of a smartphone and
that it would have a major impact on the smartphone market.  In an interview I did
with a national reporter after the event, I was asked my view on the new iPhone. I
stated that it would be a revolutionary device but that it "represented a major
platform that Apple could innovate with in the future." History has shown that this
perspective was on the money and the iPhone has been the catalyst for serious
disruption for many industries. The first industry it upended was the PC market,
where Apple’s stroke of genius was to put a PC in your pocket. At the time the
iPhone shipped, PC sales were around 400 million units a year. Until the mobile
revolution that came with the iPhone, the only way people could access the internet
was from a PC or laptop. Today, thanks to the iPhone, iPad, and all the Android
equivalents inspired by Apple’s ideas, people have many more options to make the
connections they need regardless of location. Consequently, the PC industry is now
shipping only about 275 million PCs a year, and this has caused a level of industry
consolidation that is now concentrated around Lenovo, HP, Dell, Acer, and Apple.
The second industry the iPhone impacted was telecom companies like AT&T,
Verizon, and Tmobile. Before the iPhone, most of the original telco business models
were around voice. Yes, voice over IP (VoIP) became popular by 2000 and had already
started pushing the telecom companies to move to digital voice instead of
traditional landline voice delivery methods. But with the advent of the iPhone,
they were effectively forced out of the traditional voice business altogether.
Today’s telecom providers are data communications companies whose business models
have been completely transformed. All have added things like information and
entertainment services, and all have become conduits for multiple types of data
services to their customers. The third industry the iPhone turned on its head was
the movie and TV business. For most of my life to watch a movie I had to go to a
movie theater and to watch a TV show I had to sit in front of my television at
home. The iPhone created a mobile platform for video delivery, and since 2007 every
major movie and TV studio has been forced to expand their distribution methods to
include downloaded and streaming services to mobile devices. We can thank the
millions of iPhones in the field, capable of letting people watch video anytime and
anywhere, for prodding these studios to make this so. We can also thank the iPhone
for fueling new types of video services like YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video
and Disney+ — video powerhouses, at least 50% of whose content is viewed on some
type of mobile device. The fourth industry the iPhone impacted has been the gaming
industry. Before 2007, most games were either delivered by way of game consoles, a
PC, or a dedicated handheld device like the Nintendo DS or Sony PlayStation
Portable. The iPhone expanded the market for mobile games as well as created an
entirely new category of touch-based gameplay. Niantic’s augmented reality-
angled Pokémon Go alone has been downloaded over 750 million times.  The fifth
industry the iPhone has disrupted has been taxi and personalized hired
transportation. The iPhone has birthed services like Uber, Lyft, and others that
have turned this industry upside down. It woke up the stagnant taxi market and made
hiring a personal ride easy and efficient.  The iPhone has also impacted the health
industry. Today, one can use an iPhone to monitor various health metrics as well as
access detailed health information, connect with health professionals, and even
receive health advice virtually anytime and anywhere. Thanks to the iPhone
connected to the Apple Watch, the concept of mobile health monitoring is rising and
will enhance the concept of Telehealth solutions well into the future.  This is a
shortlist of the industries Apple's iPhone and smartphones have impacted since the
iPhone launched 15 years ago. It will be fascinating to see how the iPhone and
smartphones evolve over the next 15 years and what kind of new industry disruptions
it will bring about.
