We/Our/Us
Before we dwell into the second plea, let me reiterate
the implication of “we/our/us” in the Lord’s Prayer. We
not only plead for forgiveness for ourselves, but also
for others. Let’s not forget that we bear dual identity:
that of a debtor (to God and to people) and a creditor
(to those who owe us). Wouldn’t it strange if we only
pray that “we” are forgiven but are reluctant to forgive
others? Can such prayers be sincere? To put it plainly,
our prayers will not be sincere if we hold grudges
against others when we plead for God’s forgiveness.
We are not forgiven not because we are reluctant to
forgive others, but because our prayers are not
sincere. Do you think our Heavenly Father will listen to
insincere prayers?

Conclusion
Forgiving “us our” debts imply bearing with each other. Moses interceded for the
people who worshiped the golden calf and rejected God’s promise of raising Moses’
descendants to be the chosen people to replace Israel (Ex 32:7-14). Daniel prayed for
the people to confess their sins to God when they returned from exile. He used
“we/our/us” throughout the entire prayer (Da 9:4-6). Nehemiah also used “we/our/us”
in his prayer when he interceded for peace for the people of Jerusalem (Ne 1:5-7).

Moses did not worship the golden calf; neither did Daniel nor Nehemiah turned away
from the Mosaic Law. Yet they did not stand on the moral high ground and denounce
the people for their wrongdoings. Instead, they identified with the sinful people and
pleaded for God’s forgiveness. This is also what our Lord Jesus did, and He expects us
to do the same. If we imitate Jesus and practise forgiveness, the church will have a lot
less finger pointing and more hands raise in prayer instead! That is why Paul said, “I
desire then that in every place that men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger
or quarrelling.” (1Ti 2:8)
