Abstract

An automatic soap dispenser is a device that dispenses a controlled

amount of soap solution (or a similar liquid such as a hand sanitizer). They are
often used in conjunction with automatic faucets in public restrooms. They
function to conserve the amount of soap used and stem infectious disease
transmission.

Some hand sanitizers on the market are manually pumped. However,

because sanitizer containers and pump devices are designed to be compatible
only between products produced by the same manufacturer, consumers must
also repurchase the container for the liquid if they replace the hand sanitizer.
Automatic dispenser makes it contactless and easy to use.
The machine has an automatic level detection system where it can detect the
level of sanitizer inside the bottle and can alarm the user to refill without the
hassle to open the machine and check the sanitizer left inside the bottle.

The automatic hand sanitizer is dispensed instantly once the sensor senses
the presence of hands. The user is then able to collect the dispensed volume in a
cupped hand. The device works on the principle of automatic obstacle detection
with the use of infra-red proximity sensor. Created at a minimum cost, it can be
installed at hospitals, vehicles, bus stations, police stations and public places.
Automatic Touchless Sanitizer is an automatic sanitizer with a sensor that
avails Touchless operation. The non-contact intelligence of the device can avoid
the spreading of germs and bacteria. The sensor installed in the dispenser senses
your hands and releases the sanitizer that becomes automatic operation. It comes
with ample storage capacity that stores several amount of sanitizer that can serve
many people for various times.

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Introduction

An automatic soap dispenser is a device that dispenses a controlled amount of

soap solution (or a similar liquid such as a hand sanitizer). They are often used
in conjunction with automatic faucets in public restrooms. They function to
conserve the amount of soap used and stem infectious disease transmission.

Hand sanitizer, also called hand antiseptic or hand rub, agent applied to the
hands for the purpose of removing disease-causing organisms. Hand hygiene is
one of the most important measures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
Hand sanitizer use is recommended when soap and water are not available for
hand washing or when repeated hand washing compromises the natural skin
barrier. Although the effectiveness of hand sanitizer is variable, it is employed
as a simple means of infection control in a wider areas such as daycare centres,
schools, hospitals, health care clinics and super markets.

As a result of rising awareness about hand hygiene and its benefits, there has
been a constant increase in demand of hand sanitizers. Hand sanitizers typically
come in foam, gel, or liquid form. This project profile envisages manufacturing
of alcohol based liquid hand sanitizer.

1.2 History of Hand Sanitizer

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do note that, when it comes to
preventing the spread of coronavirus, “if soap and water are not readily
available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.”

And indeed, that is the primary ingredient in hand sanitizer: alcohol. Most hand
sanitizers contain anywhere from 60% to 95% isopropyl or ethyl alcohol mixed
with water and gels like glycol and glycerin in order to prevent drying out users’
skin. The resulting product is typicall sold in a hand gel or liquid spray under
brand names such as Purell or GermX.

But while alcohol has been in use as an antiseptic since the late-1800s least, the
exact origins of hand sanitizer are up for debate.

One version of the story points to Lupe Hernandez, a nursing student in

Bakersfield, California in 1966, as the inventor of hand sanitizer after
combining alcohol and gel for use by doctors in situations where they don’t
have time to access soap and warm water before treating patients.

However, a recent investigation by the Smithsonian Institution historian Joyce

Bedi was unable to turn up any trace of Hernandez, or any evidence of a U.S.
patent for hand sanitizer under that name from the 1960s.The Centers for

1.3 Importance of Sanitizer

Germs are everywhere! They can get onto hands and items we touch during
daily activities and make us sick. Cleaning hands at key times with soap and
water or hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol is one of the most
important steps you can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to those
around you.

There are important differences between washing hands with soap and water
and using hand sanitizer. Soap and water work to remove all types of germs
from hands, while sanitizer acts by killing certain germs on the skin. Although
alcohol-based hand sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of germs in many
situations, they should be used in the right situations. Soap and water are more
effective than hand sanitizers at removing certain kinds of germs
like Norovirus, Cryptosporidium, and Clostridioides difficile, as well as
chemicals.

Hand sanitizers also may not remove harmful chemicals, such as pesticides and
heavy metals like lead.

Hand washing reduces the amounts of all types of germs, pesticides, and metals
on hands. Knowing when to clean your hands and which method to use will
give you the best chance of preventing sickness.

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are popular, but they do not eliminate all types of
bacteria and may not remove all harmful chemicals.

It is important for schools and public spaces, such as malls, to have public
handwashing facilities available for students and patrons. Children should be
taught from an early age to wash their hands after toileting and encouraged to
wash hands before meals. Businesses should place reminders to wash hands in
public toilets and around food service areas.

In addition, properly cleaning objects touched by multiple people on a frequent

basis is an invaluable adjunct to the protection hand-washing affords. Handrails,
door knobs, benches, chairs, and toys need disinfecting frequently, especially
during cold and flu seasons. This can seem like an overwhelming task but the
payoff in less days of missed school, less days off work due to illness, and less
admission to hospital for illness is well worth it.

CHAPTER 2
LITERATURE SURVEY
LITERATURE SURVEY

Market Survey means an investigation into the state of the market for a
particular product or service, including an analysis of consumer’s needs and
preferences.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

The problem statement here is that the level of sanitizer inside the bottle is to be
detected without the hassle to open the machine and checking the amount of
sanitizer left inside the bottle. With this level detection system a person can get
notified after the level of sanitizer is at a certain level with an alarm and then
can refill the bottle. The alarm should only ring when it reaches at a certain
level.

PURPOSE

To develop an Automatic Hand Sanitizer, which detects the level of sanitizer

and alerts giving an alarm for the user. It also detects the hands coming under
sanitizer and spraying sanitizer on hands.

SURVEY

In this project it mainly says about the hospital grasped infections, which is
about 2 Million Patients per year and also says that it is 8th leading cause for
deaths annually in India. It also says that handwashing is important and also
effective with proper hand washing steps, but washing with soap and water is
time consuming for peak hours in hospitals. This project also shows the
effectiveness of the alcohol based hand sanitizers, which reduces infection rates
by whopping 30%. They used hand sanitizers with 60 to 70 percent ethanol or
isopropanol for reducing significant number of pathogens.

CHAPTER 3
SCOPE OF PROJECT

Hand sanitizers have become a essential during this pandemic and use of hand
sanitizer Are widely used as precaution against corona virus. The manual
dispenser of sanitizer requires the same bottle produced by the manufacturer and
also it cannot hold an ample amount of sanitizer which is required in some places
which have constant visitors. The automatic hand sanitizer is easy is to use and it
can also hold a large amount of sanitizer

With the help of level detection system the level of sanitizer inside the
bottle can be detected and can refill if required, when it reaches a certain level
an alarm goes off which notifies the person to refill the bottle.

CHAPTER 4
METHODOLOGY

A hand sanitizer dispensing machine is a hand washing unit that can either be
self-standing or in combination with other hygiene stations. Hand sanitizer
dispensing machines are available in different sizes, price ranges, operation
modes, and capacities. They are installed in public and commercial washrooms.
Hand sanitizer dispensing machines are user friendly and cost effective with
lower maintenance costs. All these features are expected to contribute to the
growth of the hand sanitizer dispensing machine market in the near future.
A rise in health care expenditure and high investments by companies in R&D
to introduce new products are driving the global hand sanitizer dispensing
machine market. The adoption of hand sanitizer dispensing machines is on the
rise among end-users such as schools & universities, shopping malls, cafés &
restaurants, and hotels. Washrooms at hotels, airports, and offices are equipped
with sanitizing machines that not only look stylish, but also use minimum power
and offer maximum advantage.
Others factor such as rise in health concerns and increase in the number of
hotels and restaurants are expected to augment the hand sanitizer dispensing
machine market during the forecast period. However, the market is expected to
be hampered due to a rise in price-based competition among market players at the
international and local levels. Local and regional players from developing
countries are steadily penetrating mature markets by offering low-cost hand
sanitizer dispensing machines. This expected to hamper the market in the near
future.

CHAPTER 4.1
Description of Sanitizer Machine

An automatic hand sanitizer dispenser is a device dispensing a controlled

amount of sanitizer. They are often used in conjunction
with automatic faucets in public restrooms. They help conserve the amount
of sanitizer used and stem infectious disease transmission
Our initial point of contact with germs is often from the hands.
Unfortunately, not many people wash or maintain basic hygiene of their
hands. Over the time people have started emphasizing more and more on
maintaining personal cleanliness and hygiene. And the best way to keep
viruses and bacteria at bay is, of course, by frequent hand washing.
Using a sanitizer dispenser for this reduces your chances of getting sick
in your inevitable daily interactions with people and germs. Hand
sanitizer dispenser also is handy in water-scarce areas.
The Ultrasonic sensors of the automatic hand sanitizer dispenser detect the
Ultrasonic energy that is Obstructed by the hand. When hands are placed in
the proximity of the sensor, the ultrasonic energy quickly fluctuates. This
fluctuation triggers the pump to activate and dispense the designated amount
of sanitizer.
This module is based on contact less. We can hang this machine to the wall
this will work on electricity we need a adapter to work this machine.
An automatic hand sanitizer system was designed, which will be presented in
two stages describing the instrument structure and control parts. This work
focused on using the elasticity of pumps and improving people’s access to
devices.
We have designed an automatic hand sanitizer system that is compatible
with various containers. When one moves one’s hand close to the device
sensor, the hand sanitizer container is pumped once.
The automatic hand sanitizer device proposed in this paper is ultimately
expected to contribute to contactless hand disinfection in public places and
virus infection prevention. Additionally, it is economical and eco-friendly by
decreasing waste emissions.

IC 555 TIMER

IC 555 Timer (Fig 1.3)

IC 555: The 555 Timer is a commonly used IC designed to produce a variety of

output waveforms with the addition of an external RC network
The basic 555 timer gets its name from the fact that there are three internally
connected 5kΩ resistors which it uses to generate the two comparators reference
voltages. The 555 timer IC is a very cheap, popular and useful precision timing
device which can act as either a simple timer to generate single pulses or long
time delays, or as a relaxation oscillator producing a string of stabilized
waveforms of varying duty cycles from 50 to 100%.

Automatic Hand Sanitizer 10

MMBGIT MUMBAI

The single 555 Timer chip in its basic form is a Bipolar 8-pin mini Dual-in-line
Package (DIP) device consisting of some 25 transistors, 2 diodes and about 16
resistors arranged to form two comparators, a flip-flop and a high current output
stage as shown below. As well as the 555 Timer there is also available the
NE556 Timer Oscillator which combines TWO individual 555’s within a single
14-pin DIP package and low power CMOS versions of the single 555 timer
such as the 7555 and LMC555 which use MOSFET transistors instead.

IC 555 Design (Fig 1.4)

A simplified “block diagram” representing the internal circuitry of the 555

timer is given below with a brief explanation of each of its connecting pins to
help provide a clearer understanding of how it works.

Block Diagram (Fig 1.5)

Automatic Hand Sanitizer 11
MMBGIT MUMBAI

The 555 timer chip is extremely robust and stable 8-pin device that can be
operated either as a very accurate Monostable, Bistable or Astable Multivibrator
to produce a variety of applications such as one-shot or delay timers, pulse
generation, LED and lamp flashers, alarms and tone generation, logic clocks,
frequency division, power supplies and converters etc, in fact any circuit that
requires some form of time control as the list is endless.
BUZZER

Buzzer (Fig 1.6)

A buzzer or beeper is an audio signalling device, which may

be mechanical, electromechanical, or piezoelectric (piezo for short). Typical uses
of buzzers and beepers include alarm devices, timers, and confirmation of user
input such as a mouse click or keystroke.
Similarly, a relay may be connected to interrupt its own actuating current,
causing the contacts to buzz (the contacts buzz at line frequency if powered
by alternating current) Often these units were anchored to a wall or ceiling to
use it as a sounding board. The word "buzzer" comes from the rasping noise that
electromechanical buzzers made.

JUMPING WIRES

Jumping wires (Fig 1.7)

Female to female jumper wires for connecting standard 2.54 Mm header pin and
also relimate connector of different type of development board. Pack consist 40
pcs of jumper wire in 10 different colour, as shown in the picture

Jumper wires are simply wires that have connector pins at each end, allowing
them to be used to connect two points to each other without soldering. Jumper
wires are typically used with breadboards and other prototyping tools in order to
make it easy to change a circuit as needed. Fairly simple. In fact, it doesn’t get
much more basic than jumper wires.

ULTRASONIC SENSOR

Ultrasonic Sensor (Fig 1.8)

An ultrasonic sensor is an electronic device that measures the distance of a

target object by emitting ultrasonic sound waves, and converts the reflected
sound into an electrical signal. Ultrasonic waves travel faster than the speed of

audible sound (i.e. the sound that humans can hear). Ultrasonic sensors have
two main components: the transmitter (which emits the sound using
piezoelectric crystals) and the receiver (which encounters the sound after it has
travelled to and from the target).

9V BATTERY

9V Battery (Fig 1.9)

The nine-volt battery, or 9-volt battery, is a common size of battery that was
introduced for the early transistor radios. It has a rectangular prism shape with
rounded edges and a polarized snap connector at the top. This type is commonly
used in smoke detectors, gas detectors, clocks, walkie-talkies, electric
guitars and effects units.
The nine-volt battery format is commonly available in primary carbon-zinc and
alkaline chemistry, in primary lithium iron disulfide, and in rechargeable form
in nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride and lithium-ion. Mercury-oxide
batteries of this format, once common, have not been manufactured in many
years due to their mercury content. Designations for this format include NEDA
1604 and IEC 6F22 (for zinc-carbon) or MN1604 6LR61 (for alkaline). The
size, regardless of chemistry, is commonly designated PP3—a designation
originally reserved solely for carbon-zinc, or in some countries, E or E-block.

Hand sanitizers usually operate by squirting sanitizer liquid when one presses
a pump with one’s hand. Some hand sanitizers on the market are automatically
pumped. However, sanitizer containers and pump devices are designed to be
compatible only between products produced by the same manufacturer.
To address this problem, we have designed an automatic hand sanitizer system
that is compatible with various containers. With the proposed device, it is
possible to avoid many people coming into contact with the pump handle, thus
preventing fomite viral transmission and making the use of hand sanitizer much
more convenient. Moreover, the system squirts a certain amount of hand
sanitizer at all times, making it easy to manage refills and replacement.
Furthermore, it can operate compatibly with various designs of sanitizer
containers, so consumers do not need repurchase a container for the liquid if
they replace the hand sanitizer. Thus, it is economical and eco-friendly by
decreasing waste emissions. The automatic hand sanitizer device proposed by
this paper is ultimately expected to contribute to contactless hand disinfection in
public places and virus infection prevention.

CHAPTER 6
APPLICATIONS
APPLICATION OF HAND SANITIZER

1. Automatic

The first and foremost advantage of an automatic sanitizer dispenser is that it

provides a truly touchless experience. There is no hassle of pressing a button or
a handle (as in the case of foot-operated ones). These dispensers have ultrasonic
sensors that release the sanitizer once you keep your hands below the nozzle.
It’s fast, safe, and simply more efficient.

2. Easy to use

For every appliance, the ease of use is what determines its feasibility. While
choosing a sanitizer dispenser, you will want something that will be easy to use,
unlike the manual ones. Automatic hand sanitizer dispensers are better than the
traditional ones as they dispense the sanitizer automatically. You don’t have to
apply physical pressure on the dispenser; just place your hands under the
nozzle, and it provides the right amount.

3. Delivers a standard dose

One of the biggest advantages of an automatic hand sanitizer dispenser machine

is that it offers a standard amount that is enough to clean both hands. These
standardized doses are usually sprayed on the hands, which causes minimum to
no wastage, unlike manual ones, which releases extra sanitizer at times.

4. Eliminates a contact point

Manual hand sanitizers require pushing the pump to release sanitizer. Touching
the pump can spread a lot of germs, as people with dirty hands also use it.

With touchless hand sanitizer dispensers, there is no common contact point,

which means less or no germs will be transferred from one person to another.

Automatic Hand Sanitizer 22

5. Modern appearance

Contactless hand sanitizer dispensers usually have a sleek and stylish design.
They also add a modern appeal to places they are installed in. If you install a
contactless hand sanitizer dispenser at your workplace, then you are indeed
giving a high-end vibe to your environment.

6. Why do we need an automatic hand sanitizer dispenser?

An automatic hand sanitizer dispenser is a device dispensing a controlled

amount of sanitizer. They are often used in conjunction with automatic faucets
in public restrooms. They help conserve the amount of sanitizer used and stem
infectious disease transmission

CHAPTER 7
LIMITATIONS
Despite the many staggering benefits of automatic hand sanitizer dispensers,
there are also some cons that have made the decision-making process tough for
the buyers. But are these cons really something to worry about.

Have to manually refill the sanitizer

The sanitizer machine alerts the person when sanitizer reaches at the low level
position and the person has to refill the sanitizer again and again when it
becomes empty or when at low level.

Batteries wear down fast

Most automatic dispensers rely on batteries to operate. So, they require regular
and timely maintenance in terms of refilling the batteries. This is an added
expense as well as a hassle for the consumers, who will have to change the
batteries as soon as they wear down.

However, since the onset of this pandemic, many hand sanitizer dispenser
brands in India have made innovations to make things easier for the buyers.
Today’s sanitizer dispensers run on electricity and thus, eliminate the hassle of
refilling batteries.

Price factor

Thes machines come with a fully automatic system, and quite understandably,
these are more expensive than the manual ones.

But instead of simply focusing on the cost price, we should also consider the
service and the long-term value of the purchased product. Being touchless, these
are safer to operate and also last longer than usual. Moreover, many brands
today offer affordable choices that everyone can buy.

Maintenance

There is scepticism that an automatic dispenser is high maintenance. As the

sanitizer dispenses automatically, it gets clogged in places, which requires
timely cleaning. This also makes the place dirty and unhygienic.

However, dispenser units that run on electricity and use a mist-based spray
technique, require very little regular maintenance. These are consequently very
hygienic as well.

Even though the refilling of sanitizer dispenser is a manual job, it is pretty

simple to refill these machines and only takes a few minutes to do so.

CHAPTER 10
CONCLUSION

It is observed that hand sanitizer have a essential requirement during the these
time pandemic of COVID-19.The use of hand sanitizer has increased nowadays
and use of the Automatic Hand Sanitizer is a vital machine.

Thus the use of machine can be effective in hospitals, construction work,

offices, homes, shops, malls, etc. The key benefit of this machine is level
detection system and contactless dispensing of sanitizer. This sanitizer machine
will also help the frontline workers to protect from virus because they are the
ones who come contact with corona virus disease. Due to the level detection
system the sanitizer machine can refilled when alarm system notifies the person.

The automatic hand sanitizer device proposed in this paper is ultimately

expected to contribute to contactless hand disinfection in public places and virus
infection prevention. Additionally, it is economical and eco-friendly by
decreasing waste emissions.

An automatic sanitizer dispensing machine designed and developed. The

machine is wall mount at entrance gates of society, schools, colleges or any
commercial building. It can spray 40 times with 100 ml liquid and is effective in
optimize use of liquid sanitizer. The power consumption is low and the
system can help to achieve contactless sanitizer dispenser. It reduces the risk
of community transmission of the virus

The machine is tested for 24hour operation for more than a week and is working
fine. It helped to reduce the contact for getting sanitizer and also reduce man
