Calibration Method
Issue No.: 01.0
Issue Date: 03 Jan 2021 For All type of Caliper
Doc. No: CM-D-001

1 Introduction
1-1 The objective of the equipment calibration is for reliable and accurate results.
2 Purpose
2-1 This procedure describes the calibration method of all types calipers as
specified in DIN 862 standard
3 Scope
This method applies to all types of caliper (vernier –dial-digital) also the depth caliper up to range 600
mm.
4 Definitions/Abbreviations
4-1: Vernier caliper:
A measuring device used for external and internal measurements that consists of a main scale
with a fixed jaw and a sliding jaw with an attached vernier scale.
5 Calibration scope

Parameter Range Calibration Method Environmental Condition

7 Procedure
7-1 preparing:
a) The measuring surfaces of the gauge blocks and the gauge measuring surfaces
for the caliper are cleaned using petroleum ether. Any grit or other particles are also cleaned from the
scale. The surfaces are wiped afterwards using the lint free tissue (or special synthetic cloth).

b) Measuring surfaces are checked to see if there are any scratches which may impede calibration.

c) The main and the vernier Scales are checked for any marking points or numbers on the scale which may
be missing or worn.
d) Dial scale is checked for the straightness of the pointer and its distance from the scale, The pointer must
be of the same width as the lines on the scale.

e) Digital scale is checked for numerical legibility and for any scratches on the display, If the numbers are
of poor resolution (checked at display value 88.88) the battery is changed and resolution is checked again,
the numbers must be clearly visible in each measuring position.
f) The fit between slider and beam shall permit the slider to be moved smoothly over the entire length of the
beam.

7-2 Environmental condition:

a) Keep the caliper and the gauge block in 20 ± 2°C for at least two hour before calibration for thermal
stability, and up to the end of calibration.
b) If the temperature exceeds these limits the calibration must be stop.
7-3 Calibration process:
a) Check the zero error and adjust it if it’s possible
b) The error in reading is checked out by setting the caliper on a combination of gauge blocks
The sizes of the gauge block combinations shall choose to cover five positions over the measuring range of
the caliper including the vernier scale.
b) Each gauge block combination shall be placed between the outside measuring faces of the jaws in three
positions along the length of the measuring faces.
c) The reading shall be noted at each position and compared with the nominal size of the gauge blocks
combination, then record the difference as the error
d) Note: the same force being applied to the slider in each case.
e) for testing the internal measurement use the caliper.
Put the two jaws of internal measurement between the internal step of the caliper at size around or equal to
the half of the full scale for the caliper and measure this size, record the indication value, this value must
indicate the size of caliper within the vernier caliper specified limit of error.
f) For depth caliper check the zero error on the surface plate
g) For calibration of depth caliper you have to check five positions over the entire range of the caliper, The
error in reading can get by setting the depth gauge on two combinations of similar size gauge blocks on the
surface plate and then find the difference between the indicated measured value by the gauge and the
nominal value of combination of gauge block used.
h) Repeat the step (g) for the five positions.

7-4 Limit of error:

a) For caliper with scale interval 0.1 and 0.05mm.

The specified limit of error = (20 + L/10) µm ≥ 50 µm.
b) For caliper with 0.02mm scale reading or digital caliper.
The specified limit of error = (22 + L/50) µm.
Where L = measuring length in mm.
7-5 Handling after calibration:

a) By the end of calibration process re-clean the caliper by cotton immersed in benzene then by dry cloth.
b) Cover the caliper jaws only by thin layer of oil or Vaseline.
c) Put the caliper in its case or wooden box.
d) Put the sticker of calibration.
