TO DETERMINE % PURITY OF THE GIVEN SAMPLE OF MEFENAMIC

ACID BY TITRIMETRIC METHOD.

CHEMICALS REQUIRED:
 Given sample of mefenamic acid tablets

 0.1 N NaOH solution

 Ethanol

 Phenol red indicator

THEORY:
Acid base Titrations:

 The branch of volumetric analysis in which an acid is titrated against a base and vice
versa is called acid base titration.

 These titrations are based on neutralization reaction between acid and base (one of them
is analyte and the other is titrant). So, they are also known as neutralization reactions.

PRINCIPLE:
Acid base titration

ANALYTE / TITRAND/ SAMPLE:

Mefenamic acid tablets

POTENCY:
250 mg of mefenamic acid / tablet

STANDARD SOLUTION /TITRANT:

0.1N NaOH solution

INDICATOR:
Phenol red solution

END POINT:
Colour change from yellow to red
FACTOR:
Each ml of 0.1 N NaOH is equivalent to 24.13 mg of mefenamic acid

LIMITS:
95% - 105%

PROCEDURE:
1. Wash, clean and dry all the glassware.

2. Take 10 tablets and weigh.

3. Determine average weight of one tablet and grind tablets to a fine powder.

4. Dissolve powder equivalent to 125 mg of mefenamic acid in about 20 ml of warm

absolute ethanol (previously neutralised) by heating and uniform mixing on a magnetic
stirrer.

5. Cool and add 5ml of more ethanol in it.

6. Add phenol red indicator in it.

7. Titrate the contents of the flask against 0.1 N NaOH solution until red colour appears
which is the end point of titration.

8. Note the burette reading and calculate the volume used.

9. Determine % purity by

% purity = Determined amount X 100

Stated amount

OBSERVATIONS AND CALCULATIONS:

S.No. Initial Final volume Actual Volume
volume V2 Used
V1 (ml) V= V2-V1
(ml) (ml)

1. 7 7
0
2. 7 14.5 7.5

Mean volume:
V = _____+______+_____

= 8 ml

Determined Amount:

1 ml of 0.1N NaOH = 24.13 mg of mefenamic acid

A ml--------------------------------- = volume x factor

= 8 x 24.13

= 193.04 mg of mefenamic acid

= 193.04 /1000 = 0.193 g

Stated Amount:

250 mg of mefenamic acid / tablet

0.250g

weight of 10 tablets = 8 g

1 = 8 / 10 = 0.8 g

0.250 g mefenamic acid = 0.8 g of powder

1 g ---------------- = 0.8_

0.25

0.125 g ----------------= 0.8 x 0.125

0.25

= 0.4 g of powder (equivalent weight)

So, 0.4 g of powder contains mefenamic acid = 0.125 g (stated amount)

% purity:

% purity = Determined amount X 100

Stated amount

= _0.193_ x 100

0.125

= --154--- %

RESULT:
 As the % purity of the given sample of mefenamic acid is -------% that lies within the
official limits (95% - 105%) so, the provided sample is of standard quality.
