ACTIVITY - GE 8 RIZAL - Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo
Topic: Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo
Direction: Read and analyze the statements below. Answer the following questions briefly
and concisely. Write your answers on the space provided for. (20 points per item)
1. Is the Noli Me Tangere anti-clerical and anti-patriotic? Defend your answer.
The novel "Noli Me Tangere" by Rizal is not anti-clerical. It was merely a demonstration of
the Dominican and Augustinian friars' wrongdoings. The book cannot be regarded as anti-
clerical because it did not attack all of the friars and it was anti-patriotic due to his subversion
of public order.
2. Explain the differences and the similarities between El Filibusterismo and Noli Me
Tangere.
The only distinction is that Rizal composed this in a different scenario and under different
conditions. As a result, he had to change the flavor and concept of the sequel, El
Filibusterismo. The words and scenes of Noli, in particular, aren't as heavy as what was
revealed in Fili. There are still love stories to be found, which essentially describe Rizal's life
at the period. Fili, on the other hand, is the point in time when the protagonist loses the love
of his life and is transformed into another man, covered in all the darkness and grief within
him, returning for vengeance, which ultimately provokes the main theme.
3. Can we liken the word filibustero to the present Filipino term pasaway? Explain your
answer.
Filibustering during the Spanish period in the Philippines meant leaving the country to plot
revolution. Hardheadedness, or "pasaway" in Filipino, refers to performing activities
regardless if they are restricted, illegal, or dangerous. In terms of "doing things even if there
is a high possibility that something unpleasant or damaging will happen to you," the two are
similar. On the other hand, whereas being a pasaway might lead to doing wrong or breaching
rules, filibustering is the appropriate thing to do in order to achieve the independence that is
solely yours.
