The Kildare Open was held on the 25/26 February 2012 at the Townhouse Hotel, Naas, Co Kildare.
There was an excellent attendance of 31 players contesting the Master, Senior and Intermediate sections.
The Masters was won by Sean Cronin on 14 points, second was Paddy Doyle on 13 points and third
was Pat Logue on 12 points, fourth was Tom Kee also on 12 points but with lower Honour points.
The Seniors was won by Michael O’Shaughnessy on 13 points, second was John Cunningham
also on 13 points, third was Joe Maguire on 12 points, fourth was Anthony Rose also on 12 points.
This was a very close finish with only one point separating 1st and 4th.
The Intermediates was won by Michael Beirne on 16 points, second was Julian McGuinness
on 14 points, third was Liam Doyle on 11 points.
Congratulations to all of the above.
The trophies were sponsored by Newsletter editor, Liam Stephens. Many thanks Liam for your
continued support and also for your continued work on our Newsletter.
Peadar Sweeney obtained sponsorship from Jordan’s Centra Store, Pa Ward (the Butcher), Genoas
(chip shop) and Hair Angels. All these businesses are in Caragh, Naas, Co Kildare. Many thanks to all.
These sponsorships enabled the Kildare Club to buy seven sets of Boards and Pieces, which will be used
to teach children how to play our game of draughts, and also covered referees expenses.
Mary Eiliffe, the proprietor of the Town House Hotel, Naas, gave us the playing room free of charge.
She also provided subsidised accommodation and free tea and coffee each morning.
Many thanks from all the players and the Kildare Club.
I would also like to thank the players who took part, some of whom came from Scotland and Denmark, and
also from North, South, East and West of Ireland. Without you there would be no competition.
I would like to thank the great Scottish player John McGill for his donation to the IDA. I once played in
the same competition as John but never got high enough up the board to play him.
Finally, I wish to thank the referees Jim and Peadar for their patience and diligence and for keeping
us all in check.

OBITUARIES
ARNOLD FITZPATRICK
It is with deep regret that I recently learned of the death of Arnold Fitzpatrick who passed away in November 2010.
Arnold from Mohill, Co Leitrim, was a founding member of the IDA and served as Chairman/Treasurer of the
Association in the late 1970s. He came 4th in the first Irish Championship (closed) in Castlebar in1977. He was a
sponsor and organiser of the Irish Open in Dublin in 1978 and the Oldbury v Lowder Match in 1979. I last met him
when he put in a guest appearance at the Monaghan Tournament in 2009. Arnold was a vice principal teacher at the
Carrigallen Vocational School from 1970 to 1997 where he taught Irish and Maths. He was an authority on the Irish
(Gaelic) language. His work for draughts in the early days of the IDA should not be forgotten. May he rest in peace.

PATSY QUINN
Patsy Quinn, Ardboe, Co Tyrone, passed away suddenly in November 2011. It has been a shock to us all, since Patsy
had been such a great ambassador for the game of draughts. He was a current committee member of the Northern
Draughts Federation and had been a member of the older Northern Ireland Draughts Association. He was the current
Irish Intermediate Champion won in Strokestown, Co. Roscommon on 1st November 2011. I will miss him.
Sean Donnelly - 6 December 2011.
