2012 KILDARE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP – Report by Bill Dobbins

The Kildare Open was held on the 25/26 February 2012 at the Townhouse Hotel, Naas, Co Kildare.
There was an excellent attendance of 31 players contesting the Master, Senior and Intermediate sections.
The Masters was won by Sean Cronin on 14 points, second was Paddy Doyle on 13 points and third
was Pat Logue on 12 points, fourth was Tom Kee also on 12 points but with lower Honour points.
The Seniors was won by Michael O’Shaughnessy on 13 points, second was John Cunningham
also on 13 points, third was Joe Maguire on 12 points, fourth was Anthony Rose also on 12 points.
This was a very close finish with only one point separating 1st and 4th.
The Intermediates was won by Michael Beirne on 16 points, second was Julian McGuinness
on 14 points, third was Liam Doyle on 11 points.
Congratulations to all of the above.
The trophies were sponsored by Newsletter editor, Liam Stephens. Many thanks Liam for your
continued support and also for your continued work on our Newsletter.
Peadar Sweeney obtained sponsorship from Jordan’s Centra Store, Pa Ward (the Butcher), Genoas
(chip shop) and Hair Angels. All these businesses are in Caragh, Naas, Co Kildare. Many thanks to all.
These sponsorships enabled the Kildare Club to buy seven sets of Boards and Pieces, which will be used
to teach children how to play our game of draughts, and also covered referees expenses.
Mary Eiliffe, the proprietor of the Town House Hotel, Naas, gave us the playing room free of charge.
She also provided subsidised accommodation and free tea and coffee each morning.
Many thanks from all the players and the Kildare Club.
I would also like to thank the players who took part, some of whom came from Scotland and Denmark, and
also from North, South, East and West of Ireland. Without you there would be no competition.
I would like to thank the great Scottish player John McGill for his donation to the IDA. I once played in
the same competition as John but never got high enough up the board to play him.
Finally, I wish to thank the referees Jim and Peadar for their patience and diligence and for keeping
us all in check.

Inishowen Draughts – Report by Gerald Callaghan

McGee, McCarron and Hegarty Collect Cups
The destinations of the three Cups were decided at The Rock bar, Muff, as the curtain came down on our annual cups
tournament. Thirty two players had pitted their wits for seven gruelling weeks of highly competitive draughts which
was slightly mellowed by the spontaneous wit of some of our club “characters” who added that vital ingredient to the
tournament.
In the senior section, Fahan’s Hugh McCarron got the fright of his life when he played Neil McLaughlin senior in the
final match of the George Devlin Cup. McCarron was a clear leader by 3 points but as the first game ended the deficit
was reduced to just one point. The final game was a nail-biting affair but McCarron managed to hold the experienced
Clonmany man to a draw and lift the George Devlin Cup for the first time. Neil took the second prize.
Newly promoted Joe Collins from Carndonagh, who was the dark horse of the competition, secured 3rd Prize
as he turned the tables on Buncrana’s Willie John McLaughin. Willie John took the 4 points in their last meeting
but Joe has now blossomed beyond recognition.
Culdaff’s Tony Gibbons and Dungiven’s Kevin McLaughlin were both knocking on the door of success but their
final drawn match put both players down the leader board. Redcastle’s Paddy Barr who had a very good win over
Buncrana’s Joe Fullerton, was also up there with the front runners, but missed the podium by 2 points.
The match between Culdaff’s Seamus Doherty and Buncrana’s Sean McGonagle ended all square.
In the intermediate division, Jim McGowan saw his aspirations of silverware dealt a serious blow as he got a really
cruel lesson from Buncrana’s John Hegarty. The Derry man only required 1 point to secure a victory but it was not to
happen, as Hegarty collected all 4 points in this top class final of the Liam Kelly Cup. Jim’s disappointment was
softened by qualifying for 2nd prize.
We have the very popular Paddy Kerr in 3rd. Place. This quick-witted Derry man, who played very good draughts
during the tournament, knocked some of our high-flying competitors off their perch while accumulating 17 points.
Fahan’s David Walker finished in 4th Place. Dungloe’s Mary Gallagher collected 2 points in her match with Fahan’s
Noel Devlin. Both players finished in joint 5th Place with Buncrana’s Liam Kelly senior, who defeated
Carndonagh’s Michael McLaughlin by a 3 – 1 score line. The most improved player of the competition was
Carndonagh’s Paddy Diver who drew his match with Drumfries’s Gerard McLaughlin.
In the John Caldwell Cup, Our President, John Joe McGee showed the rest of the field a clean pair of heels as he won
The John Caldwell Cup for the first time by 4 clear points. His final match was a real tough one against Redcastle’s
Brian Lafferty. Brian has won most cups and trophies on the draughts scene but had to submit to defeat by the over
powering Buncrana man. Brian collected 3rd. Prize. The match between Moville’s Sean McCauley and Carndonagh’s
Julian McGuinness was the other big attraction of the night, as both players were playing for a podium position.
Julian was 2 points ahead of Sean before the match started therefore the result being 2 points apiece was sufficient to
place Julian in 2nd spot. Sean McCauley, Neil McLaughlin junior and Billy Grant all shared 4th Place.
Compliments to the management and staff at the Rock Bar for their hospitality and courtesy throughout the
tournament.

OBITUARIES
ARNOLD FITZPATRICK
It is with deep regret that I recently learned of the death of Arnold Fitzpatrick who passed away in November 2010.
Arnold from Mohill, Co Leitrim, was a founding member of the IDA and served as Chairman/Treasurer of the
Association in the late 1970s. He came 4th in the first Irish Championship (closed) in Castlebar in1977. He was a
sponsor and organiser of the Irish Open in Dublin in 1978 and the Oldbury v Lowder Match in 1979. I last met him
when he put in a guest appearance at the Monaghan Tournament in 2009. Arnold was a vice principal teacher at the
Carrigallen Vocational School from 1970 to 1997 where he taught Irish and Maths. He was an authority on the Irish
(Gaelic) language. His work for draughts in the early days of the IDA should not be forgotten. May he rest in peace.
Ar dheis de go raibh a anam uasal. - Liam Stephens

PATSY QUINN
Patsy Quinn, Ardboe, Co Tyrone, passed away suddenly in November 2011. It has been a shock to us all, since Patsy
had been such a great ambassador for the game of draughts. He was a current committee member of the Northern
Draughts Federation and had been a member of the older Northern Ireland Draughts Association. He was the current
Irish Intermediate Champion won in Strokestown, Co. Roscommon on 1st November 2011. I will miss him.
