Abstract
At the WOLAITA SODO UNIVERSITY, in companies are an important part of the students
‘schooling. Students have to do an internship in the company of their choice at the first semester
of fourth year in order to get experience in a professional context.
The main objective of this internship program is to offer students the opportunity
to broaden their educational experiences by actively participating in a professional architecture,
planning and/or engineering office environment. The intention is to provide an opportunity for
exploring the world of architectural practice through professional activities and reflective actives
that address educational goals and objectives.
Students on internship are engaged in both academic and practice activities they will be engaged
in doing work, documenting their efforts, and reflecting on the experience.

EXCUTIVE SUMMERY
Theory versus practice, this is a very important dilemma architects go through
when undertaking a project. What stays on the paper and what gets realized is a

So, according to the UIL offices I choose the first option. After that depend on our
senior’s intern ship experience I prepare portfolio then apply my request paper and

portfolio and request paper (NARGA architects and engineers) accept my request and
give confirmation paper.
This Title Deed is presented to the architectural firm and determines the height of the
building and the layout within the municipality’s pre-assigned regulations. Following this
the firm prepares sketches, schematic and preliminary designs and a final design
according to the project type and the client’s needs. This is called the proposal phase.
After the office and the client have agreed and settled on a final design, all architectural
drawings are compiled and sent to the municipality for approval. The authorities check
that all regulations are met such as bar-far ratio, offsets of building elements from
boundary … etc.
and sends the documents back to the firm for improvement until all specifications are
met.
After approval of all architectural documents, the process for documentation of
electrical, sanitary, structural and in some regions bill of quantity begins. After approval
of all architectural documents, the process for documentation of electrical, sanitary,

3.WORK EXPRIANCE
At the office there is a culture of research and experimentation while designing any project no
matter the scale of the project. The experiments might be carried out using different mediums.
Physical models and sketches are equally or at times more appreciated that digital mediums
due to their freedom and physicality. Working with hand allows us to use our full creative
process and not be bound by the software’s limitations. Here the medium might be software
based or other physical objects which are believed to be representative of the project and also
communicate the design with the client and others.
But personally I have follow deferent procedure based on my task for example for preparing 3 D
modeling just simply understanding site plans, floor plans, and all elevation is enough. And also
making an optional floor plans and facade is need deeply understanding of client need and site
analysis result and also municipality rule and regulation.
But sometimes my task fully preparing of a new design at that time I was making deep site
analysis, discuss with client and also our design team and also refers some architectural books
and also making schematic plans by free hand sketching.
I have tried my best to appear on time because that’s one of the major traits one must have to
achieve and develop in life as a whole. I have always performed to my best, had a good
communication with my supervisor and the other stuff, I felt free to ask question and learnt a
lot from feedbacks.
Working on projects with deadlines and my progress monitored made me more focused and
allowed me to work within these time frames effectively. At times when I was working on a
project and there is also another one waiting that I am needed on, the time table shrinks and
the speed I am required of is higher. In addition, my accuracy on certain tasks improved. The
correction needed on my work reduced as my internship went on. Areas I was mostly involved
besides design were producing drawings (floor plans, elevations, sections, details), 3D
modeling, renderings both 3D and 2D. Working extensively on different projects helped me
improve these skills both on speed and accuracy.
4.2.2Social responsibility
As an architectural student we are responsible not only to our clients but our society. We
should consider the social and economic aspect of our project. The most meaningful projects
are the ones realized with limited resources and consider the current social context.
4.2.5Team Work
Our office had 2 interns this semester. This helped me to get comfortable with the work
environment quickly and work as a team with full cooperation and listen to others ideas with an
open mind. This was an already existing office culture. Our supervisor works to develop our
ideas and make them feasible with us in the process. This mentality helped us to work in an
environment that’s inviting of new ideas.
4.3Work Ethics
Skill and creativity are nothing without work ethics. To realize a project, we are expected to
work within the given time frame and to produce a good design that the client is content with
And which is also practical and feasible. Work ethics constitute of punctuality, accountability,
reliability, respect for other professions.
4.3.1 Responsibility
Responsibility and accountability is one of the most required skills in any profession. In my
internship experience I learn to take responsibility to each and every work I produced. Since

every decision has an impact on the project and the client financially and functionally I had to
consider both these dimensions during my decisions. Every person needs to be accountable for
the work they do because mistakes they make on the design phase if it goes all the way to
construction it will be needing revision and once it is built demolition and reconstruction will be
necessary this will add more cost on the client.
4.3.2 Punctuality
Time is an important factor in our profession. We should start projects early on and work on
them extensively. But this doesn’t mean we should not respect the deadline. Architects have a
bad name when it comes to punctuality, this might be while the architect is trying to improve
the project every chance he gets or if he wasted his time inappropriately. Both this excuses do
not justify the delay of a projects submission.
4.3.3 Reliability
Office is very different from our experience at the institution. Here unreliability costs not only
you but your client, your office, other professional which proceed with your design decisions. A
true professional is reliable to deliver a good project within the timeframe set by the client.
Time is a very important resource to take into account when starting a project. It is as
important as the quality of work. If the architect cannot deliver these two, the architect is
hurting the client and at the same time he is affecting his future in the profession as he starts to
lose customers and recommendations.
This document will include program analysis, time schedule for the main architectural design,
contracts which specify from firm selection to design development and the site plan. Based on
this document the client has three alternatives to choose an architectural firm.
Small project does not require TOR design; the program is analyzed by the chosen firm.
The firm that is chosen to design the project will begin by referencing the TOR for program
development and analysis. They are also required to work in a time schedule which specifically
states which design will be ready for when. The architectural firm is required to design
architectural, structural, electrical, and sanitary and in some projects mechanical.
If there is no mistake the client is asked to provide the remaining drawings (electrical, sanitary
and structural) for licensing. These designs are done simultaneously with the architectural and
they are also checked before licensing. Here the firm is also required by the municipality to
provide design report.
This report includes electrical, structural and sanitary. Every calculation made in the design
process should be submitted to the municipality along with the working drawings. The design
report is a new introduction to prevent unskilled individuals from copying the work of others.
The architectural firm also prepares BOQ (bill of quantity).
This document specifies every part of the building with its cost including labor costs during
construction. BOQ along with the working drawings together is called Tender Document. After
the tender document is prepared the client decides how to select contractor for the project. If
auction is decided the tender document is multiplied and given to the auctioneers to fill for how
much they are willing to do the construction. The architectural firm might also do
Preliminary design: Schematic design which includes finishing material, few dimensions and
preliminary cost estimate.
Working Drawings: -Architectural (necessary plans (floor plans, site plan, roof plan, foundation
plan), sections, elevations, necessary details, schedules (Window door schedule scale, kitchen
schedule, toilet schedule scale, finishing schedule)), structural, sanitary, electrical.
Design report: Calculations made by the structural engineers, sanitary engineers and electrical
engineers.
BOQ (bill of quantity): Estimation of the cost of the project both labor and material.
4.8.1 Documents
Variation order: errors made by any of the design team or modifications are corrected through
this letter. Supplementary agreement: if additional construction is asked by the client in the
given site this agreement is signed between them to proceed.
4.8.2Challenges
The culture of documentation is underdeveloped in any line of work in Ethiopia. Most things
are done through experience and word of mouth. This might cause a lot of problems in the
work place. Communication is not properly documented so it is hard to pin point the
responsible party in case of an error.
4.8.3Documentation of design
during and after the design Different architectural firms use different methods of
documentation for their projects. Some prefer to store digitally. The soft copy of every project
is stored in their archive.
The recent firms can do this easily because their work is done digitally and the sketches and
preliminary designs can be scanned and included in the archive. The rest are done initially using
different cad software so incorporating them is much easier. Old firms that want to have a
digital archive mostly use A1 and A0 scanners to digitalize their old projects. The drawings
documented are all the architectural, structural, sanitary and electrical. The architectural is
given more emphasis being saved in the original format of the software used.
Conclusion
I had the perfect time working as an intern in a Narga consulting architects and engineers plc.
The overall internship program facilitated me with the opportunity of exploring the industry as
architecture and as a business as well. Moreover, it showed me the roles the construction
industry is playing in the contemporary Ethiopia, the general activities of practicing office and
the overall system. Finally, the program gave me the chance to visualize Architecture from
different perspectives and consider options in the years to come.
Practicing in the real world will give students different incite about the subjects
they have been learning at school.it will let students interpreted the theoretical
studies to practice and give them ideas how to prepare for the working world.it is
a program that is useful for students, so it should continue for the next generation
