INTERNSHIP REPORT

Abstract
At the WOLAITA SODO UNIVERSITY, in companies are an important part of the students
‘schooling. Students have to do an internship in the company of their choice at the first semester
of fourth year in order to get experience in a professional context.

The main objective of this internship program is to offer students the opportunity
to broaden their educational experiences by actively participating in a professional architecture,
planning and/or engineering office environment. The intention is to provide an opportunity for
exploring the world of architectural practice through professional activities and reflective actives
that address educational goals and objectives.
Students on internship are engaged in both academic and practice activities they will be engaged
in doing work, documenting their efforts, and reflecting on the experience.

The internship is an opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge gained in

school in a professional seating. Although the students are earning academic
credit, they will be paid a fair and appropriate wage for their contributions to the firms that
employ them as interns many of the students are quickly treated as
regular employees due to their demonstrated strengths in professional skills,
knowledge, and attitudes.
There are several products of the internship experience that are evaluated by University-industry
linkage coordination office department during or after the internship period. These include
weekly, monthly and final report which will be submitted to the mentor.
Weekly and monthly reports for the Extended Internship will reflect for the last four months,
student experiences related to such activities such as office operations and procedures, client

2.Overall internship experience

2.1Geting into the company

At the second semester of 3rd year, we were informed that in the next year first
semester (forth year first semester) we will begin our intern program. Initially, there were

INTERNSHIP REPORT
two options given by the university industry linkage office (UIL office) to get willing
companies. One was to search and find by our self and the other was the UIL office
gave us the opportunity to select one of the available candidate companies.

So, according to the UIL offices I choose the first option. After that depend on our
senior’s intern ship experience I prepare portfolio then apply my request paper and
portfolio together in deferent available willing companies. Finally, after checking my
portfolio and request paper (NARGA architects and engineers) accept my request and
give confirmation paper.

2.2 Section I have been working in (Narga)

At the office my role was varied from project to project. It included design,
preparation of working drawings, 3D modeling, rendering of both 3D models and
preparing presentation drawings, and also finalization work.

2.5 Work flow in the office

The general process in producing a certain design for construction begins from the Title
Deed. The client, individual or company, must possess an approved Title Deed from the
specific authorities within the sub-city. According to this Title Deed a soil investigation
report is produced on the plot of land the client owns. The soil investigation report
includes the soil type, behavior and other useful information for structural and
architectural design uses.

This Title Deed is presented to the architectural firm and determines the height of the
building and the layout within the municipality’s pre-assigned regulations. Following this
the firm prepares sketches, schematic and preliminary designs and a final design
according to the project type and the client’s needs. This is called the proposal phase.

After the office and the client have agreed and settled on a final design, all architectural
drawings are compiled and sent to the municipality for approval. The authorities check
that all regulations are met such as bar-far ratio, offsets of building elements from
boundary … etc.

and sends the documents back to the firm for improvement until all specifications are
met.
After approval of all architectural documents, the process for documentation of
electrical, sanitary, structural and in some regions bill of quantity begins. After approval
of all architectural documents, the process for documentation of electrical, sanitary,

structural and in some regions bill of quantity begins. These are summited again to the
municipality with the architectural drawings for a final approval to begin construction.

2.7developing skill and experience in my section

In my intern ship, I have a chance to participate on different types of works which
are Basic and can add so much on my professional understanding in architecture. I tried
to influence my supervisor to get different type of works. Most of them need software
skills, and it was very helpful to approve my sills. I have also prepared optional plans. It
was very helpful to evaluate myself on being creative and maximum space usage in my
design works.
In my internship program I developed a lot of skills which are very use full for my future
architecture carrier and applied skills that I have learned in my architecture class. This
include software skills like (auto CAD, Revit, lumion, twin motion photo shop, sketch up)

3.WORK EXPRIANCE

3.1 Procedures used performing tasks

NAME: -KIDUS FELEKE ID: -215/10
INTERNSHIP REPORT NARGA consulting and architects and engineers
W.S.U COLLAGE OF ENGINEERING
DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE
INTERNSHIP REPORT
At the office the procedures used are similar for every project. Before going into the
design we are briefed about the project which is followed by site visit and discussion with the
client.

At the office there is a culture of research and experimentation while designing any project no
matter the scale of the project. The experiments might be carried out using different mediums.
Physical models and sketches are equally or at times more appreciated that digital mediums
due to their freedom and physicality. Working with hand allows us to use our full creative
process and not be bound by the software’s limitations. Here the medium might be software
based or other physical objects which are believed to be representative of the project and also
communicate the design with the client and others.
But personally I have follow deferent procedure based on my task for example for preparing 3 D
modeling just simply understanding site plans, floor plans, and all elevation is enough. And also
making an optional floor plans and facade is need deeply understanding of client need and site
analysis result and also municipality rule and regulation.
But sometimes my task fully preparing of a new design at that time I was making deep site
analysis, discuss with client and also our design team and also refers some architectural books
and also making schematic plans by free hand sketching.

I have tried my best to appear on time because that’s one of the major traits one must have to
achieve and develop in life as a whole. I have always performed to my best, had a good
communication with my supervisor and the other stuff, I felt free to ask question and learnt a
lot from feedbacks.

3.2 Performance during the semester

During the semester as the number of projects I took part in increased my accuracy
and speed increased which led to fast completion of projects making me capable of taking on
more responsibility. This is visible in the time it took me to finish the working drawings of
different projects and producing optional plan and new design also 3D modeling of some of the
projects. This meant few time was required for consultation and fewer resources wasted during
the different stages of the projects.

3.3 Challenges faced and measures taken

The main challenge i faced at the office was regarding the clients. Everyone has to
be patent when the clients changes their idea from day to day. After a project has well designed
has been agreed with the clients they might change their idea, even ask for a new design.
Specially on Ms. Roman and Mr. adem project it is one of the major challenge.
And also challenge might come from the plot purchased by the client which might
be highly irregular and the functional requirements he sets forth are difficult to include in the
given area.

NAME: -KIDUS FELEKE ID: -215/10

INTERNSHIP REPORT NARGA consulting and architects and engineers
W.S.U COLLAGE OF ENGINEERING
DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE
INTERNSHIP REPORT
The measures taken to overcome these challenges is to show the limitless possibilities
of design and to convince the client of what good architecture can do for its
users and also how the client can benefit economically and having a good piece of architecture
that he can all his own. The problem of irregular plots and a challenging site is actually a good
design tool that can be used to the projects advantage. They can give a certain identity to the
project depending on the method used to solve the problem faced. These challenges the
methods used to overcome them is a very important quality an architect needs to become a
good professional.

4.0 OVER ALL BENEFITS GAINED

4.1 Skill gained

During the semester I learned the profession through practice which I was unable to during my
previous studies. This exposure helped me to see different aspects of the work environment
and the skills required to work in a team, see different approaches to design, handle different
tasks and take on responsibilities and how and when to use software’s in collaboration with
others and gain other valuable skills.

4.2 Practical Skills

3.2.1Speed and accuracy

Working on projects with deadlines and my progress monitored made me more focused and
allowed me to work within these time frames effectively. At times when I was working on a
project and there is also another one waiting that I am needed on, the time table shrinks and
the speed I am required of is higher. In addition, my accuracy on certain tasks improved. The
correction needed on my work reduced as my internship went on. Areas I was mostly involved
besides design were producing drawings (floor plans, elevations, sections, details), 3D
modeling, renderings both 3D and 2D. Working extensively on different projects helped me
improve these skills both on speed and accuracy.

4.2.2Social responsibility
As an architectural student we are responsible not only to our clients but our society. We
should consider the social and economic aspect of our project. The most meaningful projects
are the ones realized with limited resources and consider the current social context.

4.2.3 Communication Skill

Communication skill is a vital part of any design endeavor be it architectural, furniture or any
other design oriented profession. At the institution we were expected to communicate with our

instructors but now we were presented with the opportunity to communicate graphically or in
person
As an architect we are expected to convince the client of our ideas and designs using different
means, from technical drawings to 3D renderings. Communication through software was also a
vital part of the work organization. While working on large scale projects different part of the
design is given to the other members of the team, which is then compiled in order for our
supervisor to comment on it. This helped me to
understand the different software’s in a deeper manner.

4.2.4 software Skills

During the semester I was able to develop my software skills. I work extensively on preparing
construction drawings, 3D modeling and rendering. To present my contribution to the project I
used software’s such as AutoCAD ,Revit while Sketch
up and Revit were used to model and visualize the project. Rendering was done on twin motion
and lumion. The other skill I gained during the semester was the
rendering of 2D drawings. I used photo shop and Lumion to render floor plans, elevations,
sections and site plans.

4.2.5Team Work
Our office had 2 interns this semester. This helped me to get comfortable with the work
environment quickly and work as a team with full cooperation and listen to others ideas with an
open mind. This was an already existing office culture. Our supervisor works to develop our
ideas and make them feasible with us in the process. This mentality helped us to work in an
environment that’s inviting of new ideas.

4.2.6 Organizational Skill

In the last three months I have learned to be organized in my file storing. Saving files and
drawings in a proper manner helps to avoid confusion and repetitions. At the office every work
is documented both digitally and physically. This method helps the showcase our work easily
and have a developed portfolio that can be presented to your clients to improve their
confidence in the office. In addition, it can also be helpful for the staff and interns to get
familiar with the offices trend and design process.

4.3Work Ethics
Skill and creativity are nothing without work ethics. To realize a project, we are expected to
work within the given time frame and to produce a good design that the client is content with
And which is also practical and feasible. Work ethics constitute of punctuality, accountability,
reliability, respect for other professions.

4.3.1 Responsibility
Responsibility and accountability is one of the most required skills in any profession. In my
internship experience I learn to take responsibility to each and every work I produced. Since

every decision has an impact on the project and the client financially and functionally I had to
consider both these dimensions during my decisions. Every person needs to be accountable for
the work they do because mistakes they make on the design phase if it goes all the way to
construction it will be needing revision and once it is built demolition and reconstruction will be
necessary this will add more cost on the client.

4.3.2 Punctuality
Time is an important factor in our profession. We should start projects early on and work on
them extensively. But this doesn’t mean we should not respect the deadline. Architects have a
bad name when it comes to punctuality, this might be while the architect is trying to improve
the project every chance he gets or if he wasted his time inappropriately. Both this excuses do
not justify the delay of a projects submission.

4.3.3 Reliability
Office is very different from our experience at the institution. Here unreliability costs not only
you but your client, your office, other professional which proceed with your design decisions. A
true professional is reliable to deliver a good project within the timeframe set by the client.
Time is a very important resource to take into account when starting a project. It is as
important as the quality of work. If the architect cannot deliver these two, the architect is
hurting the client and at the same time he is affecting his future in the profession as he starts to
lose customers and recommendations.

4.3.4 Respect for other professions

My internship program also helped me value other professions. In the process of communicating
and exchanging of ideas, I have learned to how to be respectful everyone’s idea and how to
understand their point of view.

4.4 Leadership skills

Leader ship is a key for any kind of project. When we come to a big scale project we must be
super precise in our project because most of the time in Architectural firms and architectural
projects the work division has more than one person, which leads to different ideas, work man
ships and finishing at the given time .Therefore there must be one person who can lead, consult
and coordinate the project for a better harmonized and consistent project that can show the
unity of the project without noticing that its done by a different professionals, while I was
working on my entire task I was consulted and lead by the head manager Fikreselassie which
helped to know more about leadership and managing project.

4.5 Entrepreneurship Skill

Our education not only equips us with the skill to design buildings but to also diversify into
other design fields. This might be product design, furniture or fashion. The education we
received at the institute made us more of a problem solver than rule followers and this defiance

allows us to look at problems without any preconceived ideas about how it should be solved
and also to question customs and see if there is a better way of doing things.

4.6 Interpersonal communication skills

4.6.1Communication with Architects

This Semester helped me to improve my communication skill with the other interns and the
architects in the office verbally and graphically. Since the design process went through different
stages working in teams and reporting the progress and taking correction and fixing problems
with other team members was a major part of my day to day office experience so developing
this skill +was important to improve the efficiency of the team.

4.6.2 Communication with other professionals

Communication with other professional was unlimited communication through drawings. since
I got real close with the other profession workers.

4.6.3 Team playing

During my internship time I got to see firsthand the importance of team playing, all the
personnel needed to be team players to achieve the common goal with minimum
inconvenience. It is clear that the project comes first and we all had to set aside our ego to and
listen to other ideas without bias to produce a good design and also to learn from one other .

4.7 Theoretical skills

phase Construction of a building entails many aspects. It involves individuals from many line of
work and from many specialized fields to realize a project. To build in a given plot of land first
the owner must check with the municipality for the master plan regulation. This regulation is
necessary before the design process is initiated. It shows the areas standard for number of
stories, setbacks for the front of the building and other regulations which will determine the
outcome of the design. Then depending on the project type feasibility study is conducted, this
includes whether the building to be built has economic impact for the area, whether it will be
profitable or not, how many employees will it have and so on. After the owner gets licensed to
design, he or she has two options; one he/she can approach a firm to design TOR (Terms of
Reference).

This document will include program analysis, time schedule for the main architectural design,
contracts which specify from firm selection to design development and the site plan. Based on
this document the client has three alternatives to choose an architectural firm.

1. Announcing an open architectural competition

2. Choosing a firm by their reputation
3. Or auctioning the design project.

The architectural firm that made the TOR can also be chosen willingly or by involving in an
auction or competition. In competition the competitors propose their concepts for their design
approach, and might be awarded with the project or just for their concept.

Small project does not require TOR design; the program is analyzed by the chosen firm.
The firm that is chosen to design the project will begin by referencing the TOR for program
development and analysis. They are also required to work in a time schedule which specifically
states which design will be ready for when. The architectural firm is required to design
architectural, structural, electrical, and sanitary and in some projects mechanical.

4.7.2 The design process

Once an architectural firm is selected to design the projects the team of architects and
engineers go the site to gather data. The information collected here will inform their design
accordingly. Then the architects in the firm start to design the building. During this phase the
architect and the client communicate regularly physically or through preliminary design. With
the preliminary design an estimate of the project is also given to the client. These designs are
not finalized drawings, they just show the rooms arrangements, scale and floor finish materials.
Here the client corrects and gives suggestions to the architect’s design. And once the client gets
his preferred design he/she takes a finalized architectural drawing to the municipality to have it
licensed. If there are errors, either standard or regulation the design is sent back to be revised.

If there is no mistake the client is asked to provide the remaining drawings (electrical, sanitary
and structural) for licensing. These designs are done simultaneously with the architectural and
they are also checked before licensing. Here the firm is also required by the municipality to
provide design report.

This report includes electrical, structural and sanitary. Every calculation made in the design
process should be submitted to the municipality along with the working drawings. The design
report is a new introduction to prevent unskilled individuals from copying the work of others.
The architectural firm also prepares BOQ (bill of quantity).

This document specifies every part of the building with its cost including labor costs during
construction. BOQ along with the working drawings together is called Tender Document. After
the tender document is prepared the client decides how to select contractor for the project. If
auction is decided the tender document is multiplied and given to the auctioneers to fill for how
much they are willing to do the construction. The architectural firm might also do

supervision and consulting works.

If they do they will be responsible to check if the contractor is doing the construction
according to the design specification in all the areas of design. They work for the benefit of the
client, they check if the construction is going according to plan and schedule, for payment

request by the contractor and to ask if they are not.
Documents:-

Preliminary design: Schematic design which includes finishing material, few dimensions and
preliminary cost estimate.
Working Drawings: -Architectural (necessary plans (floor plans, site plan, roof plan, foundation
plan), sections, elevations, necessary details, schedules (Window door schedule scale, kitchen
schedule, toilet schedule scale, finishing schedule)), structural, sanitary, electrical.

Design report: Calculations made by the structural engineers, sanitary engineers and electrical
engineers.
BOQ (bill of quantity): Estimation of the cost of the project both labor and material.

4.8 The construction phase

In the construction phase three parties are involved, the client, the supervisor and the
contractor. All parties have their own responsibility. The client and the supervisor sign
“Contract Administration and supervision” which outlines their responsibility. The construction
phase might be faces with some problems which need alteration or errors made during the
previous phases. At this time correspondence between the three parties is crucial. They
communicate through formal signed letters to notify each other.

4.8.1 Documents
Variation order: errors made by any of the design team or modifications are corrected through
this letter. Supplementary agreement: if additional construction is asked by the client in the
given site this agreement is signed between them to proceed.

4.8.2Challenges
The culture of documentation is underdeveloped in any line of work in Ethiopia. Most things
are done through experience and word of mouth. This might cause a lot of problems in the
work place. Communication is not properly documented so it is hard to pin point the
responsible party in case of an error.

4.8.3Documentation of design
during and after the design Different architectural firms use different methods of
documentation for their projects. Some prefer to store digitally. The soft copy of every project
is stored in their archive.
The recent firms can do this easily because their work is done digitally and the sketches and
preliminary designs can be scanned and included in the archive. The rest are done initially using

different cad software so incorporating them is much easier. Old firms that want to have a
digital archive mostly use A1 and A0 scanners to digitalize their old projects. The drawings
documented are all the architectural, structural, sanitary and electrical. The architectural is
given more emphasis being saved in the original format of the software used.

Conclusion
I had the perfect time working as an intern in a Narga consulting architects and engineers plc.
The overall internship program facilitated me with the opportunity of exploring the industry as
architecture and as a business as well. Moreover, it showed me the roles the construction
industry is playing in the contemporary Ethiopia, the general activities of practicing office and
the overall system. Finally, the program gave me the chance to visualize Architecture from
different perspectives and consider options in the years to come.
Practicing in the real world will give students different incite about the subjects
they have been learning at school.it will let students interpreted the theoretical
studies to practice and give them ideas how to prepare for the working world.it is
a program that is useful for students, so it should continue for the next generation

A recommendation I give for Narga consulting architects and engineers there is a

shortage of high performance work stations, if there were enough high performing
computers works would be faster, simpler and better.
