1. There are 116 SY students & 100 TY students for a course.
a) How many ways are there to select 2 class representatives, so that one is from SY & other
from TY?
b) How many ways are there to select a class representative, such that he is from SY or from
TY?

2. A multiple choice test consists of 10 questions. There are 4 possible answers for each question.
a) In how many ways can a student attempt the questions, if he has to answer all the questions?
b) In how many ways can a student attempt the questions, if he need not answer all the
questions?

3. There are 4 routes from city A to city B & 3 routes from city B to city C.
a) In how many ways can a person travel from A to C?

purchased?

Practical no: 2.4 Binomial Numbers & Identities


1. Expand (x + y)5 using Formula & combinatorial proof.
2. Give the expansion for (a – b)3.
3. Find the coefficient x4y12 in the expansion of (x - y)16.
4. Find the coefficient x2y9 in the expansion of (2x + 3y)10.
5. Find the coefficient x8y10 in the expansion of (2x - 3y)18.

6. Prove the Pascal’s identity for combinations: C(n+1, k) = C(n, k-1) + C(n, k). (1 ≤ k ≤ n)

7. Prove the Hexagon identity for combinations: For k,n  IN, 1 ≤ k ≤ n,


C(n-1, k-1)* C(n, k+1)* C(n+1, k) = C(n-1, k)* C(n, k-1)* C(n+1, k+1).

8. Let n  IN, then prove that C(2n, 2) = 2C(n, 2) + n2.

9. Let n  IN, then prove that C(2n, n+1) + C(2n, n) = ½C(2n+1, n+1).

Practical no: 2.5 Pigeonhole Principle


1. Show that if seven colours are used to paint 50 bicycles, then atleast 8 bicycles will be of same colour.

2. A student has offered six subjects in a college. If the college does not work on weekends, show that
the student must study atleast two subjects on any 1 weekday.

3. If there are 1000 students for an entrance test, then find the minimum number of students whose
names begin with the same alphabet.

4. Show that in a set of 15 integers there are two whose difference is divisible by 14.

5. Show that if 7 numbers are chosen from 1 to 12, then two of them add upto 13.

6. How many minimum people are required to guarantee that atleast 2 of them are born on the same
day of the year?

7. Prove that in a triangle of side 1 unit, if 5 points are selected, then there are atleast two points whose
distance is atmost ½ units.

8. If 10 points are selected from the interior of an equilateral triangle of side length 3 units, then there
must be atleast 2 points whose distance apart is less than 1 unit.

9. If 17 points are selected from the interior of square of side length 4 units, then there must be atleast
2 points whose distance apart is less than 1 unit.

Practical no: 2.6 Principle of Inclusion & Exclusion


1. Find the number of integers between 1 & 1000 (both inclusive) that are not divisible by 4 & 6.

2. How many numbers in IN10000 are divisible by 2, 5 or 6?

3. Find the number of integers between 1 & 500 (both inclusive) that are not divisible by 2, 5 & 7.

4. Find the number of integers between 1 & 500 (both inclusive) that are divisible by 2, 5 or 7.

5. Find the number of positive integers not exceeding 10000 that are not divisible by 2, 4 & 6.

6. Find the number of integers between 100 & 10000 (both inclusive) that are not divisible by 2, 5
& 7.

7. Find the number of integers between 1 & 1000 (both inclusive) that are neither perfect squares
nor perfect cubes.

8. How many numbers in IN500 are there that are either odd or square of an integer?

9. How many arrangements of the digits 0, 1, 2, …, 9 are there that do not end with 8 & do not begin

10. How many arrangements of the digits 0, 1, 2, …, 9 contains atleast one of the patterns 174, 196 or
497?

11. How many 5 letter words using the 26 letter alphabets (WR) either begin with a vowel or end

12. Suppose a bookcase has 200 books, 70 in French & 100 in Mathematics. How many non-French
books not about mathematics are there if
a) There are 30 French Mathematics books?
b) There are 60 French non-Mathematics books?

13. Among 600 families, 100 families have no children, 200 have only boys & 200 have only girls.
How many families have both girls & boys?

14. Suppose there are 1000 students for a computer course, of which there are 400 students each
studying C, Python, Java. 200 have taken only C, 200 only Python & 150 only Java. 100 students
are learning both C & Python, 20 both C & Java & none taking Python & Java. How many students
have taken all the three subjects?
