Foreign language in Romania

In my opinion, in Romania we learn at least two foreign languages like English, French,
German but the main foreign language that we learn is definitely English. When we get
into highschool we already know how to speak English properly. We learn grammar, how
to speak correctly, we learn literature, how to do essays, also we do a lot of speaking, and
this is helping us to express ourselves correctly and this is very helpful because we want
to be understood and to be able to understand, for that we do also listening.

I think that our schools don't have a very good system, but English is very well learnt.
Our English teachers do their best to teach us how to manage a conversation or even how
do you do an essay or a paperwork for school.

On the other hand, other foreign languages like French or German are not very well
learnt, because students don't take them seriously. It's more like a mentality thing, and
that's why we consider this languages not very necessary. Most of us, students, think that
English is the main language and we prefer to learn this language because is the most
used language in the world, or this is how we think it is. We think that we can live very well
with just one foreign language, but it's not necessarily that easy. A lot of jobs and
universities ask for more, at least two foreign languages , so we have a lot to lost.

According to a Eurobarometer, less than half of Romanians say they can have a
conversation in another language. English is the foreign language that Romanians speak
most, followed by French, German and Spanish. Over 70 percent of Romanians believe
that every European should know at least one foreign language and 60 percent believe
that English should be the best option. Nearly half of Romanians say they can converse in
another language, English being the most commonly used. However, only 20 per cent of
Romanians use a foreign language on holiday, compared to the European average of 50
per cent.
All schools in Romania have foreign language programs. Students must study at
least one language to an advanced level and a second one at a more basic level. In other
cases there are more than two foreign languages available to study and the student can
choose from several. Many schools also offer bilingual courses. During the communist
period, the main language taught was Russian and German was the second most
common. Nowadays things have changed and the school curriculum is very different.

In conclusion, I think that we should take very seriously both foreign languages that
we learn in school, because it is much helpful to know more languages, and also, every
language is special and at certain point in your life it may help you. So, after all that I've
been said here, we should take in consideration to learn more languages, the main reason
is to help ourselves to do better in life and to handle every challenge in our path.
