1.4.1 General
The Leica surgical microscope M220 F12 is an optical instrument tailored for Ophthalmology applications to improve
the visibility of objects through magnification and LED illumination.
It can be applied for observation and documentation and for human and veterinary medical treatment.
The F12 stand is available with a stabile base with 4 brake castors for easy and save movements and
a robust column with footswitch holder.
The swingarm consists of the horizontalarm with integrated power modules and the parallelogram with a gas spring inside.
The mains switch, the plugs of all electrical connections and the power supply are on a panel on the bottom of the horizontal arm.
The swingarm has 5 mechanical brakes with hand knobs for free positioning and an adjustable turning knob
for vertical movements.
The gas spring in the parallelogram is responsible for balancing the swingarm in this vertical direction.
The focus/tilt unit is mounted on the end of the parallelogram, on a shaft. If the XY-unit option is chosen by customer,
that unit will be attached between parallelogram shaft and focus/tilt.
The focus function of the optics is controlled by a compact, flat linear guided table with a spindle drive motor inside the housing.
The tilt function of the microscope is provided by a manual lever on the side.
The processor board, which is connected via the horizontal cable to the power supply, is also located into this unit.
Here the service can directly update a software or change the footswitch functions if necessary.
In the inside of the cover is engraved the processor board layout for fault finding by user.
The XY-unit consists of 2 flat linear guided tables, which are moved by linear actuators.
The XY-cable connects the switch board with the processor board.
The speed is adjustable with 1 potentiometers on the processor board by the user.
The microscope carrier at the bottom of the focus/tilt holds the optics carrier, which is divided in two parts:
Optic and Illumination.
The illumination path is originated on a LED-light on the rear of the carrier, directed by a condenser to a mirror and
beamed through the objective - on the bottom of the carrier. The light intensity is adjustable via the potentiometer knob,
which also pulls on-off the light.
It’s possible to add maximal 2 filters in the illumination path. The LED is a spare part which can be replace by the user.
The binocular tube and the eyepieces are set on the top of the microscope as usually. The system is capable to be equipped
with one of the standard beam splitters to take a second observer as well as a video adapter.
The rubber footswitch allows commands to the microscope and consists of one pedal button for the focus drive,
one pedal button for the magnification changer drive and one pedal joystick for the XY movements.
The footswitch cable of 4 meters connects the panel of the horizontalarm with the footswitch, which can be saved
on the column holder when not used.

all mounted in the optics carrier.
As a LED illumination is a highest reliable and long life technology, no back up illumination system is built in.
As by principle it produces no infra red light, no filter is necessary. Optional filters possible by 2 filter slides.
Service part:
The LED assembly is mounted and adjusted on heat-sink for easy replacement.

A central processor-board controls the electrical functions and contains all drivers and interfaces. It is
supplied with 24VDC and generates the 5V for the logic supply. It reads the user interfaces (a connected
footswitch, the light control, located in the optics carrier and the center switch of the YX-unit). The LED-
illumination is driven by a current source from the processor board. DC-motors drive the focus slide and
the magnification changer. The X- and Y motors are linear actuators with enclosed potentiometers for
position detection. A service port on the processor board provides a RS232 interface for connecting a
terminal or for SW download.
1.5.2 Illumination
The illumination is realized by means of an LED array, consisting of 6 single SMT-LEDs, which are
connected together serially. The array is mounted on a heat sink (service part). It is driven by a current
regulator from the processor board. The minimum voltage (given by SW version 1.6) is 16.3V, the
maximum current/voltage is 700mA/21V. After the expiration of the typical life time the intensity is
reduced to 70%. The demanded values are read by means of a push button potentiometer /switch
(10kOhm). The switch is used for switching on/off, the potentiometer for dimming the light. The
processor-board reads these demanded values and drives the current source accordingly.
The 5 step magnification changer is driven by means of a 12 VDC motor with gear (120:1). The changer
optics is sitting on a rotating drum and has 6 “snap in positions”. When a change of the magnification is
commanded via the footswitch, the motor turns for a half rotation. It drives a clutch which forwards a
short impulse to the changer drum, so it will be pushed into the next snap-in hole. After the impulse the
motor has to stop immediately. A micro switch detects if the half rotation is done and feeds back a signal
to the processor board – for disabling the motor current. For another activation of the magnification
changer the footswitch has to be released and pressed again - above procedure will start again.
A 12 VDC motor with gear (19:1) drives the focus spindle drive. The range is limited to 40mm by means
of 2 end switches, located on the processor board. The switches directly do interrupt the motor current –
if once reached, the motor can be moved to the opposite direction only. The speed is adjustable by
means of a potentiometer, located on the processor board.
M220 F12 Technical Description
Doc Code 10 665 770 - V2.0 1-19 03/2009 Mser - 3243
1.5.4 XY drive
Two linear actuators drive the X- and Y slides. The actuators consist of a 12 VDC motor, a spindle with
gear reduction ratio of 1:210 and with a stroke length of 50mm. An integrated potentiometer delivers an
analog position feedback signal. The motors are driven by a dual full bridge motor driver, located on the
processor board. The speed of both motors is adjustable by means of one potentiometer, located on the
processor board.
Both motors are plugged into the switch board. It contains the center push button/LED and
inductors/capacitors for interference suppression (motor current). The center button and the center LED
are directly connected to the microcontroller on the processor board.
No limit- or center-switches are required – the range is stored on the processor board by means of
reading the analog position signal. Therefore once a calibration has to be performed – refer to Service
programs/adjustments in section 3.3 of this manual.
The power supply converts the filtered and fused mains voltage into 24 VDC. It is a medical approved
AC/DC switching power supply with overvoltage- and overload-protection. The maximum output current
is limited to 3.33A (80W).
1.5.6 Footswitch
The footswitch consists of 8 single switches. The appropriate switch signals are normally pulled up to 5V
(pull-up circuits are located on the processor board). When a switch is pressed, the appropriate signal
becomes grounded. The single switches don’t allow a service access, in case of a failure only the
footswitch cable can be replaced.
Power management
24 VDC, received from the power supply are used for the supply of the LED-current-source, for the
motor drivers and, protected by an electronic fuse (300mA), for a DC/DC converter. It delivers the 5 VDC
for the logic supply. Both, 24 and 5 V are indicated by diagnostic LED’s.
Footswitch interface
For each footswitch signal a pull-up circuit with an LED – indicating whether the switch is pressed or not
- is present. The signals are permanently monitored by the microcontroller. In case of an activated
switch ( means a “low signal”) the microcontroller will start the demanded action.
8-bit Microcontroller
The microcontroller manages all motor- and the LED-driver, reads the footswitch, light control and XY-
button. It converts analog signals (potentiometers, current feedback from motor drivers) into a digital
value for further processing. Via a service port SW can be loaded and status information can be
received. A diagnostic LED indicates if program is running.
Multiplexer
The multiplexer provides the XY- and focus speed information (derived from potentiometers), the
brightness information (from brightness potentiometer) and current feedback (from motor drivers)
signals to the microcontroller.
