IMPORTANT:
IMPORTANT
Know mode of action of fungicide because:
• know which diseases can be controlled by the fungicide
• use different MOA in disease management program to delay
fungicide resistance development
Breadth of activity
Single-site:
site
• active against only one point in one metabolic pathway of
pathogen or a single enzyme or protein needed by the fungus
• e.g. specific enzyme: demethylase – triazoles
succinate dehydrogenase -strobilurins
ubiquinol oxidase – carboxamides
Fungicide applied
Mobility within the plant
Leaves produced after
Contact the application are not
(protectant) protected
No chemical = no
Droplets spread out on

inside
Mobility within the plant
Leaves produced after
Locally systemic the application are not
(translaminar) protected
No chemical = no
Droplets spread out on

tissue = external and
internal protection
Mobility within the plant
Leaves produced after
Systemic the application protected
(acropetal)
No chemical = rely on
Droplets spread out on
fungicide via xylem
and move inside leaf
tissue = external and
internal protection;
Fungicide on the stem
moves upwards in the
xylem to new growth
Role in Protection
Preventative:
• contact action 8
• prevent spore germination
and infection
9
• contact and systemic fungicides
Curative:
Curative
• kill mycelium and fruiting bodies
within the leaf
• systemic fungicides

Strobilurins (= QoI fungicides)
e.g. Quadris ®
e.g. in Stratego ®
Strobilurins (cont.)
• Broad spectrum
C. Curative
Rust is present at low levels in lower to mid-canopy in yours or a
neighbor's fields
1st application: triazole
2nd application (If needed) :
minimal level disease strobilurin
premix product *
3rd application (If needed) : chlorothalonil
* Section 18 still pending
Headline not registered for use on soybeans yet!!!
Alison says:
Timeline to assess the risk of soybean rust for a growing season
X.B. Yang (see www.soybeanrust.info)
January
Assessments = little value
February
April
Rust in LA, MA or AL - spores likely to reach NC region by July
May
Critical
June Rust in LA, MA or AL - still important but decreased risk
