EXPERIMENT NO 2

To measure the height of work piece by using Vernier Height Gauge.

Apparatus:
 Vernier Height Gauge
 Rectangular Box

Theory:
The Vernier Height Gauge has a Vernier Caliper, equipped with a special base block, measuring jaw, and other
attachments which make the instrument suitable for height measurements. A height gauge is a measuring device used
either for determining the height or for repetitious marking to items to be worked on the former type of height gauge is
used in doctor’s surgeries to find the height of people. These measuring tools are used in metal working or metrology to
either set or measure vertical distances, the pointer is sharpened to allow it to act as an ascribe and assist in marking out
of work pieces.

Types of Height Gauge:

There are two types of height gauges

 Vernier Height Gauge

 Electronic Height Gauge

Diagram:

Parts of Vernier Height Gauge:

 Main scale
 Vernier scale
 Locking Nut
 Retainer used to move jaws
Procedure:
 First of all, I put the apparatus on the table.
 Set the apparatus to its original position.
 Then I put the work piece into the jaws.
 The I note the main scale reading and Vernier scale reading.
 Multiply the Vernier scale reading with least count.
 I calculate value and found my total reading.

Observation and Calculations:

minimum divisionon main scale
least count=
total no of division on vernier scale
least count=0.02 mm
 Height of rectangular box = 102.23mm

Main scale Vernier scale Least count × Vernier Total = main scale +
reading reading scale Vernier scale
123 30 0.02 × 30 = 0.6 123.6

Comments:
 Measure the main scale reading carefully to get more precise value.
 Must check the zero error before using apparatus.
 Try to reduce human error as much as possible.
 Follow the instructions of the instructor carefully.
