Mathematics Project

BIMDAS Practice

Project Name:
Using all the numbers 1 – 9 exactly once and the
operations of BIDMAS to attain a given list of 25
Consecutive Numbers

Team Name:
KKKl
Student’s Name:
Fadak Saleh

Numbers Given:
50-74
Introduction:

The project we were given to do involved using the digits 1 to 9 and just the
BIDMAS mathematical operations to aim for a list of 25 consecutive numbers.
The rules were quite simple.
Every digit had to be used exactly once in attaining a given number.
Only the operations of BIDMAS were allowed in getting the number.
For example, to get the number 91, we could use the following method.
( 1+2 )3−( 4 ×5 ) + ( 8 × 7 ×9 ) ÷ 6=¿( 3 )3−22+504 ÷6=¿27−20+84=¿111−20=¿91

Here, we used all the digits 1 – 9 once and only once, and just the operations
of BIDMAS to get 91.
Our project involved forming a team of 4 students to complete a given list of
100 consecutive numbers using the method outlined above. Each member of
the group was to do a separate 25 consecutive numbers. This ensured that
every student in the class did a separate list of 25 numbers by themselves.

Aims:
The aims of the project were to improve our familiarity with the operations of
BIDMAS, to improve our comfortability with multiplication, division, addition,
and subtraction, and to improve our numerical reasoning and logical thinking
skills.
The aims were achieved in a fun, challenging way. Some techniques were
developed to help us out. As we worked through our number list, we were able
to devise new strategies to help us in achieving our goals.
Limiting our goals to 25 consecutive numbers helped us see how changing a
single or simple operation could vastly change our answer.
Results:
The number set that I was tasked with completing was the numbers 50 – 74
Below are the results I obtained.
50=( 1+5 ) × ( 8+2 ) + ( 3+7 ) × ( 9−4−6 )51=( 1 ×7 )2+ ( 3 × 6−5 )−( 8 ÷ 4 )−9
3
52=( 8 × 9 )− (1+ 4 ) + ( 7 ×5 × 6 ) ÷253=24 × ( 3+6−5 )− ( 9+8−7 )−1
54=( 7+ 4 ) × ( 3+2 )−( 1−5 ) × ( 8−6 ) −955=( 1+3 )2−( 5 ×9 )+ ( 8× 6 ×7 ) ÷ 4
56=( 7+5 ) × ( 6+1 ) × ( 9−8 ) × ( 4−2 ) ÷ 357=( 1× 3 )2 × ( 8+7−9 ) +(5+4−6)
58=( 1× 4 )2+ ( 6 × 7−5 )−( 9 ÷ 3 ) +859= (1+3 )2 × 4−5 × ( 7−6 ) × ( 9−8 )
60=( 1+ 4 ) × ( 5+7 ) × ( 9−8 ) × ( 6−2−3 )61= ( 6+5−9 ) + ( 1× 3 )4 −( 7 ×2+8 )

62= (1 ×3 ) −( 5 ×6−7 ) + ( 9 ×8+ 4 )63=23 × ( 8+7−6 )− ( 9+4−5 )−1

64=( 1+4 ) −( 3 ×7 )+ ( 9 ×5 ×8 ) ÷ 665=( 5+1 ) × ( 2+7 )−( 8+3 ) × ( 9−6−4 )

66=( 1+2 ) −( 5 ×9 )+ ( 6× 8 ×7 ) ÷ 4 67=( 1× 4 ) × ( 8+7 ) + ( 9−6 ) × (5+ 2 ) ÷ 3

68=( 1× 2 ) + ( 6× 9−4 )+ ( 7+8−5 )69=( 1× 2 ) × (5+ 4 ) × ( 8−7 )−( 9−6 )
70=( 5+2 ) × ( 7+3 ) × ( 9−8 ) × ( 6−4−1 ) 71=( 1 ×2 ) 4+ ( 8 ×9 ) −( 7 ×5 ) +(6 ×3)
72=( 9−3 ) × ( 5+1 ) × ( 8−6 ) ×(7−2−4)73=( 1× 2 )3 + ( 5 × 4 × 6 )−( 9 × 7 ) +8
74=( 3−2 )4 + ( 7 ×6 )+ ( 8× 5 ×1 )−9

Conclusion:
By doing this project, I feel that I have improved my skills in a number of areas,
both Mathematically, Academically, and Socially. I learned to work as part of a
group, all working towards a common goal.
I also improved my ability in the operations of BIDMAS and in my mental
arithmetic. I learned how to think logically and critically, working within
constraints and having to change my plans and approaches when I hit a
problem. I enjoyed doing this project.

Personal Comments:
This project was more challenging than I thought it would be since the
numbers are very limited but it was fun and the instructions were simple. I
used all numbers 1-9 once and the operations of BIDMAS, on some you can see
that I used all operations of BIDMAS and on other numbers I only used some of
the operations since this project doesn’t specify how many times we use the
same operation or if we have to use all of them but again I really enjoyed this
project.
