A LESSON PLAN ON TEACHING GRADE 7 SCIENCE

QUARTER: IST SCHOOL YEAR: 2016 – 2017

YEAR AND SECTION: GRADE 7 – MATTHEW TIME OF TEACHING: 8:00 TO 9:00
TIME FRAME: 2 HOURS (1HR. PER MEETING) DATE: AUGUST 21 - 22

GENERAL COMPETENCY:

• Differentiate plant and animal cell according to presence or absence of cellular

organelles.
• Explain why the cell is considered the basic structural and functional unit of all
organisms.

I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the period, the students should be able to:

1. identify the parts of the cell
2. describe plant and animal cells
3. differentiate plant cell from animal cell
4. construct a Venn diagram to show parts that are common to both and
parts that are only found in either plant and animal cell.

II. LEARNING CONTENT

Subject Matter: Plant and Animal Cell

References: Krogh, David., (1949). Biology: A guide to the Natural World.

Materials: sheet of paper, ball pen or pencil, and plant and animal cell
illustration

“Let us Pray” (Angelica prays

with the whole class).
Thank you Angelica for leading our You’re welcome Sir (Angelica

You may now go back to your seat.

GREETINGS GREETINGS

How was your morning class? We have a good morning sir!

Did you eat your breakfast this Yes sir, we have eaten our

for today’s lesson.

CHECKING OF ATTENDANCE CHECKING OF ATTENDANCE

Wow! You sure are ready for FAITH! (all names that have

office tomorrow.

Who among my handsome and (Marjohn raises his right hand)

gorgeous students could give a
brief statement about what we
discussed last meeting?

different classifications of its
parts and their functions.

You are welcome. Thank you sir.

well done.

Now what have you noticed in our (Lester raises his right hand)
puzzle? What have you observed?

Yes Lester? I have noticed two different

keen observer. Keep up the good
work.

Our lesson for today deals about (Students will listen)

the two types of cells. The plant
and animal cell.

(This time the teacher will share

and explain the lesson objectives)

ACTIVITY ACTIVITY

For our next activity, since you are (Students will listen)
seated evenly, you will work with
this in groups of five.

(The teacher will distribute the (Students will receive the

worksheet containing the activity) worksheet)
This will be the instruction, since (Students will listen and
you are grouped into groups of afterwards, they will read and
five, all of you will work together. start working with the
worksheet)
You must read the introduction
part of this worksheet before
comparing plant cell with animal
cell.

Make sure you have answered the

guide questions and in the last
part, you will make a Venn
Diagram that tells the difference
and similarity of both cells.

Write your Venn diagram in that

manila paper and present it on the
class afterwards.

If you have any question, don’t

hesitate to approach me. I will give
you 10 minutes for that and five
minutes for the presentation.

One last thing before you proceed

class. Make sure that you put the
necessary details in the Venn
Diagram. And here is the criteria:
(SEE APPENDIX)

ANALYSIS ANALYSIS

(Note: The questions here are

from the worksheet. Student’s
answer may vary.)

1. Compare the shape of a plant

cell with that of an animal cell
as shown in Figures 1 and 2.

2. Which cell parts are found in

both cells?

3. Which are present only in

animal cells?

4. Which are present only in

plant cells?
5. Based on your observations
and study of plant and animal
cells, cite differences and
similarities between them.

6. What do you think will happen

to the cell if the plasma
membrane does not function
properly?

7. What is the purpose of the cell

wall in plants?

8. Look at Fig. 1 again. Why are

there several chloroplasts in
the plant cell?

9. How would vacuoles in plants

serve as defense against
animals that eat them?

Times up! Class, kindly pass your (Students will pass their
worksheets forward and every worksheets and will post their
group please post your out-puts. out-puts).

Now, let us start from group 1 This is our findings. In our

group we have noticed that
the plant cell has special
structures know as
chloroplasts that helps them in
the process of photo synthesis.

Now, let us start from group 2 This is what we have

discovered, in our discussion,
we have uncovered that the
animal cell has the formation
of cleavage furrow.

Now, from group 3 This is what we uncovered, in

our group we have discovered
that plant cells have thick cell
walls.

Thank you, you are now scientists. (Students will clap) Thank you
You are truly commendable. Thank sir.
you for those brief yet
comprehensive explanations. Give
yourselves a round of applause.
ABSTRACTION ABSTRACTION

(The teacher will present an (Students will listen attentively

illustration about the plant cell and jot down some notes)
and animal cell together with their
parts and their respective
functions via power-point
presentation and will have a
discussion about this)

(The teacher will entertain some (The student will answer

student generated question or will questions and will also ask
throw diagnostic questions) some questions)

Yes Lester? Sir? What is the main function

of the cell membrane of both
plants and animals sir?

The function of the cell membrane Ah, thank you sir. I thought it
is to regulate what substances would only act as a container
come and pass through the cell. of the cell to avoid the
cytoplasm from spilling.

Yes Marjuhn? Sir? Why are the cells needed

to be healthy? Couldn’t we
just let them die because they
will still get replaced with
other cells?

Marjuhn, just like how healthy you Ah, thank you sir.
are, cells need to be healthy also.
They are our building blocks. If
they won’t be healthy you cannot
function normally.

So class, are there any questions? No sir.

C. SUMMARY C. SUMMARY

Now it is time for our spotlight. Today, we have discussed the

2._____ Mitochondria b) uses sunlight energy to produce food (glucose)

3._____ Cell Wall c) the gel like fluid that holds the organelles

4._____ Cell Membrane d) organism whose cell contain a nucleus, other organelle within
a membrane and a rigid cell wall

5._____ Cytoplasm e) stores food water and nutrients

7._____ Vacuoles g) provides shape for plant cells

8._____ Plant cell h) produces energy

9._____ Animal cell i) directs all activities of the cell

Part II - Complete the following short answer question

1. Based on your understanding of the characteristics of Plant and Animal cells, list two
ways that Plant & Animal cell are different.

2. Per our discussion, if each organelle (plant or animal) represented a part of a typical city,
what would it be?
• Mitochondria-
• Vacuoles-
• Chloroplast-
• Cell wall

Part III – Label the parts of the Plant Cell (A) and Animal Cell (B).
V. ASSIGNMENT/AGREEMENT

How would you simulate the parts of the animal or plant cell to a thriving
community or city? Write your answer on a clean sheet of ½ crosswise. Pass
it tomorrow.
