What’s In It
MIMAROPA is called the Southern Tagalog Region of the Philippines. It is designated as
Region IV-B. The term MIMAROPA is a combination of the names of its constituent Provinces
namely: Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan. MIMAROPA, Panay Island, Negros,
Bohol, Cebu, Guimaras, Siquijor, Samar and Leyte arts and crafts depict the different aspects of
their life and culture and are handed down from generation to generation.
These groups display their traditions, culture, faith and history through various media
techniques and processes like sculpture, weaving, pottery, physical ornaments relating it with
the elements arts and principles of design. MIMAROPA and Visayas Region are distinguished
from each other based on their language, customs and their way of living. Most of their craft are
made from materials that are abundant in their locality. Their designs are derived from their
surroundings and represent their community. Folk arts are mostly used for religious activities
and some have utilitarian functions and became large industry.

1. MIMAROPA
A. THE IRAYA- MANGYANS OF MINDORO are fond of making baskets. It has intricate patterns
and designs of humans, animals, trees and other objects. It made of dried nito grass and forest
vines, which are meticulously and patiently woven to create these unique baskets. The Mangyan
design is called “Pakudos”.

B. MARINDUQUE- known for mat weaving from buri or raffia plant. They are also known for
their Moriones Festival celebrated every Lenten season. Folk religious festivals re-enact the story
of Longinus.

C. ROMBLON- is known not only for its fine marble products but also for its beautiful woven
mats and bags from Romblon plants. Also Known for its fine marble product this place was
named as “The marble Country of the Philippines.”

D.PALAWAN- is known as the country’s last frontier because of its rich cultural diversity.
Puerto Princesa underground river it recognizes as one of the seven wonders of nature
this was officially confirmed on January 28,2012. Longest underground river in the world.
TUBBATHA REEF- is the largest marine habitat located some 98 nautical miles at the
heart of Sulu Sea.
Tingkop- is a cone-shaped colander harvest basket made of blackened natural bamboo.

2.VISAYAS REGION
A. PANAY is one of the largest Island s of the Archipelago and is composed of the Provinces of
Ilo-Ilo, Antique, Aklan, and Guimaras. Weaving is the primary form of arts and crafts in Panay
Island even before the Spaniards came to the Philippines. It was once tagged as the “textile
capital of the Philippines”. Their primary source of fibers is; Pineapple, pandan, bariw plants,
cotton and abaca.
Patadyong – wrap around piece of cloth worn by women as a skirt and usually paired with
kinoma. It is colorful and features geometric designs. It is made out of cotton and abaca.

B. NEGROS ISLAND is called the Sugarcane bowl of the Philippines. It is known for sinamay weaving, a
world class weaving industry.
C. BASEY SAMAR-known for its beautiful and colorful hand woven banig which is made out of tikog
leaves. It is known as “New Banig Capital “of the Philippines.
D. BOHOL – Is the home of the malmag and the Chocolate hills. Antequera is known as the “Basket
Capital of Bohol”.

E. CEBU- known by many nicknames such as Queen City of the South, City of Fashion and
Design and ASEAN. City of culture/ASEAN cultural City. Cebu is popularly known for its many
crafts and is the leading exporter of world class-furniture in Southeast Asia. Also, it is dubbed as
Milan of Asia because of this furniture industry.

PHYSICAL ORNAMENTATION
Physical ornamentation can be categorized into three are as specifically the use of
costumes, jewelries and tattoos. The textiles were varied because of the availability of materials
found in the locality.
